To be a little bit...doubtful about the way wine and alcohol are worshipped on MN?

I probably am going to get slated here...I drink now and then...maybe a bottle of wine a month with DH...there are SO many threads where people say

Wine helps!

and "Is it wine o clock?"

and it seems like a real enabling kind of culture here...."Oh 4.30's not too early for wine!"

and that kind of thing.

AIBU to think that it's an unhelathy atitude?

OP, I don't think it's just MN, I think, in general, a lot of British and Irish culture promotes an unhealthy attitude to drinking whether it's a glass or 2 every night or binge drinking at weekends, more alcohol than is healthy is very often not just tolerated but encouraged.

I completely understand why people like a drink after a long day and I also agree that most people aren't going to feel ill effects on their overall health even with a couple of glasses a night but I do feel the attitude could do with being revised a bit. It'd be a HUGE job though!

so, if you can't beat 'em.... Wine

SPsFanjoLovesBrokenBiscuits · 24/06/2012 18:30

I shall be drinking soon to watch the game with as I'm child free

Mrsjay · 24/06/2012 18:30

oh i am naughty i may just do that .

TapirBackRider · 24/06/2012 18:36

The OP stated in a later post that she was judging...just a bit (16:33)

Frankie See OP's post at 15:41 - quite clearly states that she didn't realise that the whole Wine thing was real.

BarredfromhavingStella · 24/06/2012 18:39

DH suddenly decided that we needed to be a bit healthier so we are having 3 alcohol free nights a week-can't tell you how lovely my 1st glass on a Thursday night tastes Grin

TapirBackRider · 24/06/2012 18:40

not real !

Guava · 24/06/2012 19:35

It's not just MN. There's a whole conspiritorial way people say the word wine as if it were the most interesting thing in the world Hmm

Mrsjay · 24/06/2012 19:41

I find vodka far more interesting than wine Grin I don't drink every night oreven every weekend but i like alcohol i drink it because i like it not because i think i deserve it or need it , although sometimes only Wine ( i want a vodka emoctions ) will do ,

TapirBackRider · 24/06/2012 19:46

Grin @ mrsjay

Agreed.

SPsFanjoLovesBrokenBiscuits · 24/06/2012 19:53

Agreed jay you have to try marmalade vodka. It taste like its been made my fairies and unicorns

balotelli · 24/06/2012 19:58

Totally hate alcohol.

Never have understood the need to use a chemical to 'relax' and 'enjoy' onesself!

You put yourself in all sorts of vulnerable situations, waste shed loads of cash and feel like shit the next morning!

Mmmmmm what fun. Hmm

I'd be quite happy if they banned the stuff completely.

Mrsjay · 24/06/2012 20:00

oh I like marmalade and i like vodka Grin where can i get this i have tried apple flavoured vodka i didnt like it much

SPsFanjoLovesBrokenBiscuits · 24/06/2012 20:01

I got it from the 24hr shop. I didn't know it was marmalade until the next day when I went to get rid of the bottle.

Born2BRiiiled · 24/06/2012 20:03

I'm feeling the opposite about MN. Feels as if we are constantly harangued on MN about being healthy, running, not drinking, not eating sugar, must live on lentils, constantly tutor your DC. Where's the joy and fun? I mean, something is going to kill me one day. I want to enjoy some of it. If that means the odd Wine, and takeaway, then so be it.

pumpkinsweetie · 24/06/2012 20:08

Totally agree with Born2 philosophy

TapirBackRider · 24/06/2012 20:09

"Totally hate alcohol... happy if it was banned completely".

I feel the same way about spiders.

People do all those things with and without alcohol, tbh.

TapirBackRider · 24/06/2012 20:11

Born2 I agree.

There are any number of threads here where this happens - almost as though some believe that the more puritan healthy lifestyle they lead, the more 'worthy' they are.

lattelov3r · 24/06/2012 20:12

I drink alcohol each weekend not wine though has to be vodka while the children are in bed Shock i dont go out at all or have babysitters never have and i need a drink at the end of the week, i like the effect of alcohol the relaxing feeling the lowering of inhibitions thats why i drink it

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/06/2012 20:19

This weekend I have had...1 G and T and am now having 1 small glass of wine. Might stretch to two. Call the detox clinic now

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/06/2012 20:19

I G and T was my Saturday night binge

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/06/2012 20:21

Maybe had 4 small glasses during week..but if I posted every time I was drinking I would sound like a real lush

monkeymoma · 24/06/2012 20:21

on MN wine doesn't count! you're not an alcoholic if you drink wine even if it's every day!

yeah it is dodgy!

NonAstemia · 24/06/2012 20:23

I've only read up to page 4, and the last page.
having spent decades drinking to excess, I recently joined the brave babes thread.
I'm really no good at the whole abstinence thing, and don't want to be. I've managed to get a more healthy relationship with alcohol going on (touch wood) and am now happy with my moderate drinking.
I've hardly drunk a thing all week, but have drunk around a bottle this evening, along with lovely food. I love drinking sometimes (just not all the time any more). Wink

What really strikes me is how massively defensive everyone is about their drinking. How everyone seems to be deliberately obtuse missing the point that doling out Wine in every situation and pretending to be drinking actual wine joining in the virtual Wine drinking perpetuates the normality of drinking to dull unpleasant feeling, emotions and general crapness.

Wow! No way at all I would have written this post a few months ago. The Brave Babes have changed me, even though I doubt I will ever be, or would want to be, abstinent. Smile

NonAstemia · 24/06/2012 20:25

Oh and by 'to excess', I mean the way that you are all presenting as absolutely fine and fuck anyone who says that's not ok. Wink Grin

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/06/2012 20:30

Well I hope you don't include my week's intake of 4-5 small, I mean 1 unit glasses and 1 G and T as 'excessive'
