To be a little bit...doubtful about the way wine and alcohol are worshipped on MN?

I probably am going to get slated here...I drink now and then...maybe a bottle of wine a month with DH...there are SO many threads where people say

Wine helps!

and "Is it wine o clock?"

and it seems like a real enabling kind of culture here...."Oh 4.30's not too early for wine!"

and that kind of thing.

AIBU to think that it's an unhelathy atitude?

I agree it is often mentioned and it can sound like everyone is half cut every evening.
However, I know I have issues about alcohol, and people who abuse it, so take it with a pinch of salt.

TapirBackRider · 24/06/2012 17:45

yellow I don't drink at all, from a medical POV it could kill me.

Drinking can be funny - relaxing the inhibitions etc, but it can also be deadly serious for some, and something not to take lightly. I can see both sides to that; I can also see the attitude on this thread that anything mentioning alcohol is a bad thing.

I think that some people really need to not take things literally - else the country will run short of buns, Wine and Brew.

ll31 · 24/06/2012 17:46

I think you need to stop taking things like smileys literally tbh...

yellowraincoat · 24/06/2012 17:56

I don't think the OP meant that mentioning alcohol is a bad thing.

But it's a bit odd that people mention it all the time, there's a thread specifically for drunk people, there's a specific wine emoticon etc.

TapirBackRider · 24/06/2012 18:03

Every forum that I've participated on has a drunk thread, even on a religious recovery site (non drinkers oddly enough).

It's the bit where the OP mentions the 'enabling kind of culture' - and the 'unhealthy attitude'. It really points to a general disapproval of those types of posts, and not being able to understand that IRL and MN are not the same.

Ormiriathomimus · 24/06/2012 18:05

Do you feel the same about those of use who over-indulge in caffeine? I can honestly say that a days that doesn't start with a large mug of tea, followed by at least 3 or 4 mugs of good strong coffee and then probably some more tea, is a day not worth living. Caffeine and tanine aren't good for me either.

yellowraincoat · 24/06/2012 18:07

I don't think anyone's life has ever been destroyed by caffeine.

I've never seen a drunk thread on another forum.

I don't disapprove of drinking. I find the attitude towards it weird in Britain and very different to other countries.

usualsuspect · 24/06/2012 18:09

I've seen plenty of Pub and wine bar threads on other forums.

If you don't like the drunk thread don't click it

usualsuspect · 24/06/2012 18:10

Its just a jokey Friday night thread it's full of inane chatter thats all. jeez

vintagewhine · 24/06/2012 18:10

Shit if we're going into caffeine territory I'm doomed. I would be a very unpleasant person without it.
Honestly was by far the worst thing of my pregnancy having to restrict my intake.

TapirBackRider · 24/06/2012 18:11

At current count, I actively post in 6 different fora, all for different things, all have a drunk thread and a couple also have a saturday night bumsex randy thread.

Not quite the same as MN, but interesting all the same.

I've found the attitude here to be very polarized towards alcohol; there is no real middle ground.

LineRunner · 24/06/2012 18:11

I don't there's a 'naughty drink' culture in any part of my life.

There's a stupid 'naughty cake' culture with some of the people at work, though.

LineRunner · 24/06/2012 18:13

I don't think sorry

I'd like to be able to do this in RL , but I can't raise one eyebrow

I managed to teach myself to raise one eyebrow purely from attempting to pull the face everytime I post the Hmm emoticon. After the many years ive been here my raised eyebrow face is perfect

Mrsjay · 24/06/2012 18:16

I used an animal forum for a few years even we had a friday night drink part of it social networking is just that social so if a few people are around enjoying a Wine on a friday night then why not socialise ,shrug.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 24/06/2012 18:18

Oh and as to drink it's a good day if I only have two glasses of wine a night. compared to the couple bottles and half bottles of vodka I used to drink every night it's actually a-fucking-mazing

yellowraincoat · 24/06/2012 18:22

Naughty cake and chocolate and crisps annoys me. Eat the cake, don't eat the cake, just bloody shut up about it.

OhDearNigel · 24/06/2012 18:22

Get on a train - they come around with a trolley offering free booze

Which train operator are you using ? I wish they did my commute to work

I think you are all being a bit unfair to the op.

I am sure she knows the difference between a real glass of wine and a Wine.
What she is commenting on is the amount of times Wine is referred to in a lot of threads. I guess it comes down to the mn point of view (which there is on a variety of topics) which is that everyone is judgmental about so many things such as ready meals, fruit shoots etc but very defensive about drinking alcohol.

OhDearNigel · 24/06/2012 18:25

And frankly, the promise of alcohol is often the only way that I can get through an emotionally demanding job, a second job that is very physically demanding, running a small business from home, a demanding role in my voluntary service organisation, a husband that works an average of 60-70 hours a week and therefore does not much housework and a 2.5 year old

Judge me all you like

Mrsjay · 24/06/2012 18:26

I agreeyellow naughty carbs cake wine blah blah annoy me too just have cake if you want it Confused

yellowraincoat · 24/06/2012 18:26

Again, I don't think the OP is judging.

yellowraincoat · 24/06/2012 18:26

Go on, MrsJay, have a naughty little slice of cake, I won't tell if you don't.

Tee hee.

eurochick · 24/06/2012 18:28

Alcohol is flipping great. I am currently not drinking as I'm doing IVF and I really miss it. The taste, the relaxing effect, the social aspect. Wine, wine, lovely wine. It is (normally) an enjoyable part of my life. As is cake.
