To be a little bit...doubtful about the way wine and alcohol are worshipped on MN?

I probably am going to get slated here...I drink now and then...maybe a bottle of wine a month with DH...there are SO many threads where people say

Wine helps!

and "Is it wine o clock?"

and it seems like a real enabling kind of culture here...."Oh 4.30's not too early for wine!"

and that kind of thing.

AIBU to think that it's an unhelathy atitude?

I meant 'most nights of the week'

TapirBackRider · 24/06/2012 23:15

I don't mean it in a bad way water, just that everyone has something that can be a difficult/awkward/tender subject. Also that people can have a bad habit of projecting their own emotions/thoughts etc onto other's posts, and perceiving things that aren't actually there.

NonAstemia · 24/06/2012 23:17

But Tapir if you don't drink, why the fuck would you use Wine as a shorthand for relaxing at the end of the day? Confused I'm sure there are loads of people who use a sit down and a bar of chocolate to signal the end of the 'working' day. I don't, so it wouldn't occur to me to say Chocolate to someone (unless I knew that that is how they relax).

I feel like this is just a semantic point, in a way, but I do think that if we don't think about how we use words, language, images, then we don't have an awareness of what we are constantly reinforcing to each other. If you keep saying 'well done, have a Wine' then you are reinforcing in your and everyone's mind that Wine is a really valid treat! At the mo I'm on a low carb diet, so I do notice how much people 'prescribe' chocolate to deal with every ill. Does it bother me? No not enormously, but I do notice it, in the same way that I noticed the phrasing on this thread.

Enjoy your wine. I certainly did tonight! Smile

BetterChoicesChair · 24/06/2012 23:18

I have a glass or two of red every night (and I'm otherwise a health nut). It thins the blood, is good for your circulation, doesn't make you fat and makes you happy Smile. Drink lots of water, eat mostly fruit and veg, exercise daily and you can make wine a part of a healthy lifestyle.

waterlego6064 · 24/06/2012 23:18

Absolutely Tapir, that's how I took it. I do think it's a good point.

waterlego6064 · 24/06/2012 23:20

Actually, it is one of the things I'm finding interesting/puzzling while I tackle my drinking: trying to get an objective perspective on others' drinking. Half the time I find myself thinking that almost everyone has got a drink problem, the other half of the time, I think it's just me!

I don't drink OP - as I posted up thread, it would be seriously detrimental to my health, along with chocolate and many other high fat items.

I've already answered your question OP, and so did you. It is a convenient shorthand used by the members of this internet community - why wouldn't I use it? It is part of the banter here, the group slang/lingo that we use as participating members - why would you willingly set yourself apart from that?

I notice lots of things about the way people post btw - but I choose to not let their idiosyncrasies disturb my calm.

TapirBackRider · 24/06/2012 23:31

Water Sending good/healing thoughts your way. I know a couple of people struggling with this.

No Diva but for bringing that accusation to the thread which just taints any real discussion which might happen. Your posts are best removed.

Not the done thing Diva - if you think there is a bridge dweller about, report straight away, don't post about it!

You said you weren't going to post anymore Wink

I can recommend reading the rest of the thread; it's been quite thought-provoking and the OP hasn't really said anything troll-worthy.

But to think that anyone who posts Wine or 'wine o'clock' worships alcohol is unreasonable. When all it really is, is light-hearted conversation between strangers mumsnetters. thespokennerd I drink on a weekend because I enjoy it. Does that make me an alcohol worshipper, even if I know hoe to control the amounts of alcohol I consume?

xDivAx · 24/06/2012 23:59
  • how
TapirBackRider · 25/06/2012 00:00

Water It's what MN is all about though - we come to rant/vent/seek support from people who may have or be going through similar experiences to us.

We may be a nest of vipers, but we do care Smile

waterlego6064 · 25/06/2012 00:01

I think you are putting word in the OPs mouth diva. She didn't say anything about people 'worshipping' alcohol, as far as I can recall. What she has done, in fact, is opened up an interesting and mostly pleasant debate.
