to think 41 isn't too old?

Told DM on Saturday that I'm pg. ( due December). She told my sister whose response, according to DM was to be "just flabbergasted". When I asked why, she replied because of my age, obviously. I'll be 42 when lo is born and have 2 dc age 5 and 2 so it's not like it's a huge gap and no one would have expected it.
She went on to tell me of 3 other people she told, all of whom apparently said words to the effect of she must be mad at her age etc.
Surely it's not that bizarre an age to be pg. Really pissed me off as if I'm being freak granny mum.

Nope YANBU and massive congratulations! Bloody hell, you're 41, not 101!

yellowraincoat · 19/06/2012 13:46

Congratulations!

YANBU don't let the bastards grind you down, there's always someone ready to piss on your cornflakes.

Sparklingbrook · 19/06/2012 13:47

Congratulations. Grin Shame your DM felt the need to tell you what people have said. Why did you not tell your sister yourself?

NigellaTufnel · 19/06/2012 13:47

Of course it's not too old!

You are pregnant, so by very definition you are not.

And if it makes you feel any better there was something in the news the other day about how children of older patents live longer or something.

Congratulations!

FunnysInLaJardin · 19/06/2012 13:47

it's not too old. I am 41 and although the thought of more children brings me out in a cold sweat, you're not too old! Congratulations btw

squeaver · 19/06/2012 13:48

You're healthy (I presume). You'll get loads of extra checks as you'll be classed as an "older mother". Don't be offended, I was classed that way at 37. Everything will be fine.

I know someone who had her first child at 47 and second at 49.

Calamansi · 19/06/2012 13:49

Congrats, of course you are not too old! Ignore, ignore, ignore!! Grin

moogster1a · 19/06/2012 13:49

Didn't tell my Ds myself as she works shifts so don't like to 'phone unless I know for sure I won't be waking her. DM however has no such qualms if she has a bit of news / gossip!
Wouldn't mind so much but DM and DF spent my first 20 years or so insisting I shouldn't have a baby young as it would ruin my life ( in some unspecified way)

Yes Congratulations! Take no notice, maybe it just seemed old in her day. Generally people had kids younger then didn't they? (massive generalisation here)

Ungratefulchild · 19/06/2012 13:49

i never understand why people feel the need to repeat others comments. Just ignore of course you are not too old. I had my last child at 41. Congratulations!

harassedandherbug · 19/06/2012 13:50

I'm 41 and sat here snuggling 5mth old ds so YANBU....and congratulations!

I also have 3 other children: ds1 is 22, ds2 is 21 and dd is 5. I much prefer being an older mother tbh.

maxmillie · 19/06/2012 13:50

that sounds entirely normal to me - and is about the "normal" age for a third child round here. I had my third last year as I turned 40.

Congratulations and ignore silly sister!

It's not too old. Most people will know someone who had a baby over 40. Like someone else said don't be offended at appointments to be classed as an older mother. My friend had her first baby at 30 and she was an ''older mother'' at the hospital.

LST · 19/06/2012 13:52

Your not to old at all! Smile

My mum is saying the complete opposite.. She's too young at 47.. To be a GP Grin

LaurieFairyCake · 19/06/2012 13:52

It's not old (as a 40 year old myself) - you are totally mad though with 2 already Grin

Alurkatsoftplay · 19/06/2012 13:53

Not too old, and even if you were, what business is it of theirs?
In the olden days, I thought people would start earlier and finish later, so you might have your thirteenth kid at 45. If you were lucky (or unlucky)

bitchtastic · 19/06/2012 13:53

I am 41 and have a 10 week old, I was not the oldest person on the labour ward. Also, my dad was 59 when I was born so we are positively spring chickens!

FantasticDay · 19/06/2012 13:56

Congratulations! I had my son four weeks before my 41st birthday. He's lovely!

FioFio · 19/06/2012 13:56

I think it sounds like sister is being a tad bitchy tbh

megandraper · 19/06/2012 13:57

Congratulations. Certainly not too old. I am 42, and my youngest is 12 months. I would have another one in an instant well 9 months if DH would agree.

Latara · 19/06/2012 13:59

Definitely not old at all. Congratulations, lucky you!! :)

Ephiny · 19/06/2012 14:00

No it's not too old, not even particularly unusual in fact. There will always be people who make daft comments, but I have no idea why your mum would feel the need to repeat these back to you! Just ignore.

MammaTJ · 19/06/2012 14:01

Congratulations!! I had my (definatley, certainly, absolute)last two days after my 39th birthday!
41 is not much older than that. I have had people assume they are my grandchildren though, so don't be too upset if that happens to you. I may just look like an old hag though!

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 19/06/2012 14:01

Not too old at all! I am 46 soon and would love a second child...
