to think 41 isn't too old?

Told DM on Saturday that I'm pg. ( due December). She told my sister whose response, according to DM was to be "just flabbergasted". When I asked why, she replied because of my age, obviously. I'll be 42 when lo is born and have 2 dc age 5 and 2 so it's not like it's a huge gap and no one would have expected it.
She went on to tell me of 3 other people she told, all of whom apparently said words to the effect of she must be mad at her age etc.
Surely it's not that bizarre an age to be pg. Really pissed me off as if I'm being freak granny mum.

Congratulations

It seems a completely normal age to me, I wouldn't give it a second thought when hearing someone your age was pregnant Confused So many people don't start having babies until mid to late 30s these days anway, so it is hardly surprising that you are having no. 3 at 41!

nosleepwithworry · 19/06/2012 15:59

HA!
Fuck um, fuck um all!! flabergasted my arse!
I will be 42 if/when mine pops out, and i am exstatically happy as is dh who will be 40!

They are just pissing on your cornflakes as another poster put it Smile

saladfingers · 19/06/2012 15:59

Congratulations! You are definitely NOT too old!
I had DD2 at 40,DS1 at 41 and DS2 at 42

tothesea · 19/06/2012 16:05

Definately not too old. I had DS1 at 37 and DS2 at 42 after years of TTC. Not one medical professional batted an eyelid. Is it something about being over 40 that makes people make these comments. I mean did she say anything when you had your second child at 39?
Lets face it somebody will always have something to say about any given situation but as long as you are happy, it doesn't matter. If I thought I could get pregnant quickly and won the lottery I would have another one in a flash Grin

Lambzig · 19/06/2012 16:08

Gosh Saladfingers, you were on a mission! How lovely to have them so close.

scarletforya · 19/06/2012 16:11

I'm 42 and due next week. Babies come when they decide! Grin

KristinaM · 19/06/2012 16:15

What nonsense! I had my last two at 41 and nearly 43.both healthy babies, born at term, conceived naturally. I had good pregnancies and didnt get any extra attention for being old.

Youngest is now 6 and i have never been taken as his gran and dh ( who is older than me and greyer) has only once been taken cor his grandfather.

saladfingers · 19/06/2012 16:21

Thanks Lambzig 3 babies in 29 months,At 5,3 and 2 now they are very close.

CaliforniaLeaving · 19/06/2012 17:08

Congratulations. I was 41 when Dd was born and turned 42 a couple months later. She's 7 now and keeps me young and running.
I did have one person ask if she was my granddaughter but when I said no she's mine she apologized and I laughed. Who cares! It did make me lose 6lbs and get my hair cut.

CaliforniaLeaving · 19/06/2012 17:10

Oh and it was the year of our 20th wedding anniversary, so big year all round. Not sure I could have had mine close like some do, now they are 23, 18 and 7

Loriens · 19/06/2012 20:10

Congratulations and you are certainly not 'too old'. I'm the same age and would love to have one if it were possible (and I hadn't got grandchildren).

I have two DGC and people just presume they are mine when we are out and about without their mum.

Good luck and enjoy your pregnancy.

FloraFinching · 19/06/2012 20:14

congratulations
DM had me at 41, and that was donkey's years ago

myalias · 19/06/2012 20:19

Congratulations

41 is not too old, my grandma had my mum at 42.

rosy71 · 19/06/2012 20:22

Of course it's not too old! My grandmother was 44 when she had my dad (nearly 70 years ago) and my aunt and uncle had their 5th 6 years ago - they were both 45 when she was born. Women have always had babies in their 40s.

CrumpettyTree · 19/06/2012 20:40

Jo Brand had her first at 43 and her second at 45. You are a whippersnapper!

KristinaM · 19/06/2012 20:41

Womenwho have babies in their 40s live longer. Fact

Rubirosa · 19/06/2012 20:44

My grandmother also had a baby (her 7th) in her mid-40s - women have always had babies at that age.

busyboysmum · 19/06/2012 20:44

I'm 42 and recently had ds 3 - I am totally loving it, he is 6 months old now and a complete joy. No problems here, best birth, water birth no pain relief, no tearing. It has never been suggested here that I am too old but there are loads of mums my age where I live.

Emandlu · 19/06/2012 20:48

Congratulations Grin

Have to say it's not something I could do, but each to their own. I'll be 44 when my youngest gets to 18. The thought of starting all over again at that point sends me into a cold sweat. I do know of 1 lady who had a baby in the 40's but round here it's quite unusual.

mathanxiety · 19/06/2012 20:49

Congratulations and best wishes.

When I was growing up there were a few unexpected babies among the 40something neighbour crowd, including one to a couple who had already adopted two children years earlier as they thought she was infertile. It was considered a bit unusual but not unheard of. The oldest neighbour was 46 and thought she was gaining a lot of menopause weight when she went for a regular checkup. It's much more usual to find women deliberately getting pregnant in their late 30s and early 40s now and has been for a while. But long ago before effective contraception women kept on having babies right into their 40s.

My dad was 46 when I was born and of course no-one raised an eyebrow at that at all..

BezzieMate · 19/06/2012 20:50

My granny had her last baby at 44 and two of my aunties had their last babies at 46 and 48 respectively.

Congrats!

Birdspa · 19/06/2012 21:10

Certainly not too old. Congratulations!! You'll be the better mother for it.

WhitesandsofLuskentyre · 19/06/2012 21:59

My sister told me I was bonkers too - DS was born when I was 41 - and my parents reacted as I imagine they might have reacted if I'd got pregnant as a teenager: with ill-concealed abject horror Grin

At first I was worried that I'd look/feel like a grandmother (as I have teens as well), but in fact I have enjoyed everything more this time round. Certainly less tired than I was in my 20s, so that pooh-poohs that argument, which I hear a lot of people using.

Hope all goes brilliantly!

ShadowsCollideWithPeople · 19/06/2012 22:53

Ah, congratulations, OP. You are absolutely not too old at all. Am actually annoyed on your behalf, really can't understand why anyone would respond to the news of someone else's pregnancy with anything other than 'congratulations, delighted for you'.

I'd have thought that 42 is quite a normal age to have a baby. My Aunt had her first at 40 and second at 44. They are now 13 and 9. She still works in a demanding job, enjoys a great social life, and above all, is an amazing, loving Mum to her children, who are happy, secure, and a delight to spend time with. I often say she's who I want to be when I grow up Grin.

Ignore the negative comments, enjoy your pregnancy, and I hope it all goes wonderfully for you!

TheSpokenNerd · 19/06/2012 23:58

congrats and YANBU! 41 might have been past it 30 years ago but not now...>I'm 39 and hardly old! I could pop a few more out and don't think I am too old at all!
