to think 41 isn't too old?

Told DM on Saturday that I'm pg. ( due December). She told my sister whose response, according to DM was to be "just flabbergasted". When I asked why, she replied because of my age, obviously. I'll be 42 when lo is born and have 2 dc age 5 and 2 so it's not like it's a huge gap and no one would have expected it.
She went on to tell me of 3 other people she told, all of whom apparently said words to the effect of she must be mad at her age etc.
Surely it's not that bizarre an age to be pg. Really pissed me off as if I'm being freak granny mum.

We are able to get pregnant from first period to menopause so biologically of
course you're not too old!
Women seem to be having children later later anyway and we're all living longer.
Personally I wouldn't want to have children at that age because I would like to be young enough to enjoy my grandchildren (if any) and would like to travel with dh before retirement Grin
Each to their own. That's why we are able to have children for such a long period of time. Choice!

swearytramp · 19/06/2012 14:09

HAd my third at 41 Grin. first at 25 second at 35. It was a shock for sure, but she honestly does 'keep us young' - DH is 56 and we both have more stamina than the younger parents i reckon. She's now 6 and the best thing that happened - congrats!!!!

JazzAnnNonMouse · 19/06/2012 14:09

Also my grandmother does this - repeats unpleasant things others have said. Sometimes I think she's just saying them herself and putting someone else's name to it so as not to get the 'blame'.
Why do people do this?!

valiumredhead · 19/06/2012 14:10

I am very envious. Congrats!

Calabria · 19/06/2012 14:13

Congratulations!

I was 42 when I got pregnant (for the only time). When I rang my younger sister to give her the news her response was that she was too shocked to speak to me just then. Shock

In her defence I had spent the best part of thirty years declaring that I was never going to have children. Grin

PatheticTrumpet · 19/06/2012 14:15

Congratulations.

I had my first (one and only) at 40.

Enjoy.

CrumpettyTree · 19/06/2012 14:26

42 is a completely normal, natural age to have a baby. Women have been having babies at that age since time immemorial. When I read about woman in their 60s who go abroad to get pregnant by IVF, I think that is a leetle bit old. 42 is fine though. My grandma had my mum at 43. My mum is a bit bonkers, but i don't think the two are linked. :o

Noqontrol · 19/06/2012 14:30

Congratulations! Not too old at all. My mate had her first at 42, and is expecting her second at 43. I had mine at 38 and 40. It's absolutely fine. Was absolutely the best time in my life for me to have children.

Chrysanthemum5 · 19/06/2012 14:33

Congratulations! Hope you have a lovely pregnancy, and just ignore any comments!

TapirBackRider · 19/06/2012 14:45

Ach ignore her - she's just practising the fine art of 'foot-in-mouthitis'.

Congratulations! Smile

SusanneLinder · 19/06/2012 14:50

*Your not to old at all!

My mum is saying the complete opposite.. She's too young at 47.. To be a GP *

So was I... :o. When DD told me she was pg, I thought I shop in NEW LOOK, Next, Monsoon etc, wear killer heels, have long nails and dye my hair. I just cannot imagine me in a twinset and pearls even when I am 90. I will probably still be staggering about in heels with a zimmer frame. :o I think M and S is too mumsy for me and yet I am a Gran.Shock.I love it tho, and am about to be a Gran again ,as DD told me yesterday she is pg again.

Nope def not too old to be a mum.Congratulations to you.

boohoohoo · 19/06/2012 14:53

Congratulations!, hoping to join you soon, have just persuaded DH into a last one, Im 41, had DS when I was 38, DD when I was 24. Much prefer being an older mum, Im much more relaxed.

NarkedRaspberry · 19/06/2012 14:57

Congratulations!

42 is not 'too old' at all. One of my BFs had her first just before her 41st birthday! Totally normal where I live. Does your sister live somewhere where most of the mums are in their early 20s?

bonnymiffy · 19/06/2012 15:02

I am 44 and 15 weeks pg with DC2. Mostly folks have said to me - "Wow, you must be really fertile" Shock
Congratulations!

notnanny · 19/06/2012 15:05

You too - told for 20 years that you shouldn't have kids too young - then end up preggers at 41!

Congratulations Smile

elliejjtiny · 19/06/2012 15:17

Congratulations! People will criticise whatever you do. People told me I had DS1 too young (I was 24), DS2 too soon after DS1 (22 months between them) and when I was pg with DS3 I apparantly had too many children.

baboos · 19/06/2012 15:21

I was 44 when twin ds's were born, albeit as the result of 10 years of IVF. I had a great pregnancy and they were born at 37 weeks with no complications. I don't drink or smoke, take regular exercise and try (most of the time) to eat well.

There are many positves to being an older mum IMO that is. You are always going to get differing opinions on what age you should/shouldn't have children, but some of us don't have the luxury to make that choice.

For me it's more about whether you are happy with the pregnancy and feel that the child will be a welcome addition to the family. You are definately not too old.

NoComet · 19/06/2012 15:24

DFs DS was born a week shy of her 43 birthday, DH and DSIL either side of DMILs 40 th!

Not too old, Congratulations

Nonio · 19/06/2012 15:29

I think your sister maybe jealous.. It is a class defensive comment. You are deffinately not to old. As long as you are heathly it doesn't matter.

MissBlennerhassett · 19/06/2012 15:30

Congratulations! I'm 41 and my first baby is due in August. Sometimes these are the cards we are dealt, who cares if you're happy?
Ignore the critics, I do.

eastendywendy · 19/06/2012 15:38

My mum was 41 when she had me. I had my last at 29.

No age is wrong apart from extremes!

TantieTowie · 19/06/2012 15:39

My second was born when I was 41 and she's now 16mo - I think congratulations are definitely in order!

Am slightly jealous also...

TantieTowie · 19/06/2012 15:40

My grandma had my father (no 4) when she was 44.

Lambzig · 19/06/2012 15:43

Congrats OP, you are definitely not too old. I am sure your sister didnt want her comments repeated back to you either. My father always does this with me and my sisters and repeats what has been said.

I had my first at 42 (just a month under 43 when she was born) and am now (hopefully, why isnt there a paranoid emoticon) 19 weeks pregnant with my second at 45.

When I met with my midwife a few weeks ago, I said that I knew I was ancient to have a baby and she replied "not at all, you are definitely in the average range for here" (Chelsea & Westminster).

exoticfruits · 19/06/2012 15:43

Congratulations! It is by no means too old and it very common to have your first at that age now.
