to think that Derek Acorah is either mad or bad?

I've just seen that Derek Acorah is claiming to have been advised by the spirit world that Madeline McCann is no longer alive.

I have an open mind when it comes to psychics but I have heard in the past that Acorah has been discredited on numerous occasions.

To me, this is just a cruel thing to do. I have my own opinions about the tragedy of the disappearance of Madeline and I have often wondered whether her parents would prefer to know if she had sadly passed away, closure? Who knows what it is like to be in their position? But some bloke, claiming that 'Sam' told him she's dead is not closure, it's just cruel IMO.

If this had come from a well respected psychic, I think I might give it more credence (as I said Im open-minded), but it comes from a man who is widely considered a charleton.

Is he a bad man, who is using the grief of parents to make a few quid from the papers or is he crazy enough to think that this really was helpful?

Anyone with any faith in Derek Acorah needs to go on youtube and search for his michael Jackson seance. He has that poor guy from xfactor, the massive MJ fan in tears as he is 'possessed' by MJ. It would be hilarious if it wasn't for the fact that the fan is obviously distraught and vulnerable. Nasty business.

seeker..no i wont break confidentialities...you seem to be rather fascinated by this subject, so why dont you go out into the field and do some of your own research, interviews, investigations, experiments, meet ppl etc...instead of equating one night of internet research, to try and prove your point....which publicly is correct...in private it is very different

seeker · 16/05/2012 10:40

Why did you get the post where you said the Joe power had helped the police in the lyndsey Quy post deleted?

doormat · 16/05/2012 10:44

if you read one of my posts after it it would explain that i asked for it to be removed..for the sake of the family...i only put it up on there to give you a case before i was going to delete it anyway...its called respect for her family

seeker · 16/05/2012 10:46

Ah. So why post it at all when it's obvious he had nothing to do with solving the case, even though he said he did?

doormat · 16/05/2012 10:56

bangs head against wall....i am not going into all this again seeker...i have said all what i have to say on the subject...if you are so interested in this subject go and find out for yourself...i am leaving this thread now as i have said all i have to say...as i said it wasnt done over the internet one evening, it was years of cold, wet, boring conditions, long interviewing, being out in the field etc....my advice to anyone who wants to do it is DONT....

my advice to anyone going to see a medium is DONT, better off placing your money down the loo....

seeker · 16/05/2012 11:15

Ok. As usual, when somebody who believes in psychic phenomena is challenged, they wriggle, change the subject, move the goal posts, have a go at personal abuse, try special pleading, try saying "oh, you won't understand, you,re too narrow minded" claim special secret knowledge they are not at liberty to share, then when all else fails, leave.

Been there hundreds of times, bought too many t shirts.

worzelswife · 16/05/2012 11:21

Waves pom poms in support of Seeker.

I utterly detest DA, and anyone who claims to have psychic abilities. The damage they do is monstrous.

I am an enormous fan of Derren Brown who has done more to educate people on co-incidences/cold readings and the fraud that goes on than anyone else.

If you've seen Derren Brown do a cold reading (it is extraordinary) then it becomes immediately apparent why some psychics seem genuine (those 2 or 3 out of hundreds that doormat is talking about). Some people are just very talented at cold reading. They are not psychic. If they were they would be able to provide clear evidence and science would embrace them and, well, have a rethink about everything.

TheBigJessie · 16/05/2012 11:21

There might be true psychics out there. There might. I doubt any of the famous men and women who make a living off it on tv are. So much obvious fishing for info!

Get0rfMoiLand · 16/05/2012 11:26

The copper who said "I wish to state, categorically, that as the Senior Investigating Officer on the Lyndsey Quy murder, I made a policy decision not to use psychics on the investigation. Joe Power has allegedly made claims that he assisted the enquiry but this is not the case.? - because he decided to make a policy decision not to use psychics, does that mean that there are forces/investigations who do make a policy decision to use psychics?

I bloody hope there aren't errant fools who consult psychics (other than those who rock up saying that they have 'evidence' and therefore need to be interviewed according to procedure).

redrubyshoes · 16/05/2012 11:29

There is a guy who calls himself the Soham Psychic. Now there is a bullshitter and a half.

Claims he made contact with Holly Wells but no there was no information forthcoming about what happened to her and Jessica..................."spirit does not dwell on that aspect of things".

Nice cop out.

Horrible vultures preying on vunerable people.

Bagpusstree · 16/05/2012 20:38

Sorry Doormat I am also confused by your arguement, and now the fact you seem to be saying psychics shouldn't be listened to?? I'm lost.

Anyways, the police DO listen to psychics. What about Robson Green? He can do it.

MardyBra · 17/05/2012 00:20

Bagpuss. Doormat is saying most psychics are con artists but that a select few are genuine. We have to take her word for that because she is in the know, but she cannot possibly discuss concrete examples with people on the internet who are not "in the know". Demanding proof will cause her to look over her pince-nez and tap the side of her nose a lot. Wink

I wish I had a spirit guide called Sam that I could blame everything on Hmm

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 17/05/2012 09:47

not that dh & spend all our time talking about the afterlife Grin sicen we don;t beleive in it, but have said it would be convenient if the dead one could act as a spirit guide to the survivor, like Randall & Hopkirk (recently got the kids Wink a box set of the corny 70s prog, they love it too

seeker · 17/05/2012 10:20

My dd had a scarily realistic alter ego called "Baby Holly" until she was about 6 who had to be consulted about everything. Maybe she was a spirit guide.

The think I find most baffling about people who believe in psychic phenomena is how coy they are. And how reluctant to claim James Randi's million dollars, which is theirs for the taking.

I would LOVE it all to be true. And it wouldn't be hard to convince me. Just one bit of good solid scientifically tested evidence would do it.

runningforthebusinheels · 17/05/2012 11:28

Seeker, I'm loving your posts on this thread Smile

CalamityKate · 17/05/2012 13:35

Me too.

AND, in doormat's case, make excessive use of trailing dots, which should be a hanging offence imho.

hiveofbees · 17/05/2012 14:24

Why would you do that if you believed in something?

crowface · 17/05/2012 14:30

I thought Derek Acorah and Sam had split due to artistic differences.
