to not understand premade 'pancake mix'?

Pancakes: eggs, milk, water, flour - simples?

I know some people can't cook, but if anything, cooking them in the pan is the hardest bit! I was a bit shocked to walk into my local Tesco today and find that they had loads of eggs and flour in stock but had sold completely out of the premade packets......?

Food snob?

YABU to be shocked

McHappyPants2012 · 21/02/2012 17:24

Bought them last year as my kitchen scales was broke, so no need to measure the flour

MummyDoIt · 21/02/2012 17:25

I don't get it either. Surely you have to mix it with some liquid, in which case why not just bung the eggs in too? I suppose it saves weighing out the flour but how hard is that?

TroublesomeEx · 21/02/2012 17:25

YADNBU!!!

My dad has bought premade pancakes for his youngest 2, not even the mix!

I gave him a stern telling off Wink!

YANBU. But I am a slight food snob

TroublesomeEx · 21/02/2012 17:26

No mummydoit, I think you can buy the full batter mixture in a bottle

ddubsgirl · 21/02/2012 17:26

ugh only used it once and its not the same as homemade, yanbu

usualsuspect · 21/02/2012 17:26

Well its not hard exactly but I'm a lazy cow . I hate these smuggy mcsmug food threads

PetiteRaleuse · 21/02/2012 17:26

Though shocked is a bit strong. I'm a bit more Hmm

LifeIsButtercream · 21/02/2012 17:26

I've never had ones with pancake mix? Do they taste different? I've never weighed the flour - just chuck it in a tablespoon at a time until it's thick enough lol!

I think I've had too much practice making pancakes as I used to live on them at uni

Sevenfold · 21/02/2012 17:26

but if you don't lile eggs you wouldn't eat a pancake

cornsilkteamdixon · 21/02/2012 17:26

I bought it. DH is making it with ds2. I get to piss about on MN. Think on perfect mummies, think on.

belindarose · 21/02/2012 17:27

I don't even weigh mine, just use a cup or a mug.

DoUntoOtters · 21/02/2012 17:27

Food snob? Possibly. But perhaps you've never been asked for pancakes at 6.30am on a child's birthday.

Do you say, "Not bleedin' likely. Have some cocopops."

Or do you say, "Pancakes? Of course, darling. Won't be a minute."

mumblechum1 · 21/02/2012 17:28

I never weigh the flour either, just dump it in a bowl, make a well, add and egg then keeping adding milk till it's the right consisitency.

DS has been making them since he was four.

LilacWaltz · 21/02/2012 17:28

You don't even need weighing scales for weighing flourConfused

You add/adjust accordingly

I have just made thick batter for stodgy pancakes and then added extra milk to make more crepey ones. Just whack it in a bowl and mix....surely?

catgirl1976 · 21/02/2012 17:28

D'you know I was saying this same thing to my DM not twenty mnutes ago.

How busy can you be? Its so quick to make. And I will buy pre-chopped onions so I am not adverse to a shortcut, but pre-made pancake batter is a step too far

LifeIsButtercream · 21/02/2012 17:28

I'm not trying to be smug usualsuspect - just a bit Hmm about a food shortcut that cuts out the easiest bit of making something lol!

I bought some and some premade pancakes that you put in the microwave. Taste the same to me

Judge away, if this is what constitutes a shock for you then oh wellGrin

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 21/02/2012 17:29

leftmymistletoeatthedoor · 21/02/2012 17:29

Lifeisbuttercream - did you know you don't have to score out every individual word you can just -- at the start and end of the phrase.

I bought the premade pancake mix. tbh it is probably just as easy to make it with the flour & eggs but just thought it would be convenient and slightly quicker (and it was). I think people just tend to go for the easiest options sometimes. They still taste ok so its not theres anything wrong with the pancake mix ones. Probably would have been more educational to do it properly and weigh the flour etc with dcs but oh well maybe next year
Yabu to be bothered about it

McHappyPants2012 · 21/02/2012 17:30

I always follow recipes, other wise I mess up lol
