to not understand premade 'pancake mix'?

Pancakes: eggs, milk, water, flour - simples?

I know some people can't cook, but if anything, cooking them in the pan is the hardest bit! I was a bit shocked to walk into my local Tesco today and find that they had loads of eggs and flour in stock but had sold completely out of the premade packets......?

Food snob?

I made pancakes from scratch and my 7 year old told me I need to give up chocolate for lent and whyGrin

treadwarily · 22/02/2012 08:47

yes yabu. It is definitely easier to stir together the mix and water than to do the other. And they taste great. And if you don't like it, don't do it. Simples.

My mom always made "Buttermilk Pancakes" from a mix, and I never was a fan of pancakes. Sweet and doughy, make me feel sick usually. Then my cousins husband made homemade pancakes while we were visiting, and they definitely were better. Since then I usually make them from scratch. But I also buy Bisquick, not sure if the UK sells that or not, and pancakes made from that are pretty good.
I buy pancake mix when we buy stuff for the food bank. The "complete" mix doesn't require anything but water, so very sensible when you don't know what is in a persons pantry.

*EauDeLaPoisson" - you can get ready-made baked potatoes in Iceland, with cheese & ham or cheese & onion filling. Just a few minutes in the microwave....

elizadoulalittle · 22/02/2012 09:54

I love jacket pot and will defintley be trying the ready pre pared ones. So shoot me.Hmm

elizadoulalittle · 22/02/2012 09:54

McCain have loads of ads up for their own equivalents too, so I guess those will be appearing in supermarkets soon.....

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 22/02/2012 11:15

I always thought it was lazy. Then I had DS and started going through shitloads of milk. So I bought the smartprice mix, as (not only is it 7p!) you only need to add an egg and water, so I don't have to use half a bottle of milk Grin

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 22/02/2012 11:21

I made pancakes the proper way last night, it took all of 5 minutes to get the ingredients out and make the batter.

Pancake mix is just ridiculous!

YANBU at all.

Pandemoniaa · 22/02/2012 11:25

I can't see the point of pancake mix either. It took precisely 5 minutes to make the batter from eggs, flour and milk and it was put into the fridge to wait until later. Result = delicious, home-made pancakes that were no more trouble than putting water into some horrible mixed up stuff.

yanbu
who needs scales to measure things for pancakes?
1 cup eggs, 1 cup flour, 1 cup milk mix-bake-eat

EauDeLaPoisson · 22/02/2012 15:00

Really not being judgeypants here but I'm a bit shocked people wouldn't have staple store cupboard ingredients such as eggs and flour

ThisIsANickname · 22/02/2012 15:16

My pancakes have significantly more to them than just milk, eggs and flour. But then I like fluffy pancakes. The recipe includes flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, vanilla extract, sugar, salt, eggs (separated), milk, cream and melted butter.

Because of that, I understand why people see the ready made mixes as less of a faff. But they don't taste half as nice.

Tinuviel · 22/02/2012 15:29

Haven't read the whole thread but I have seen a ready mix where you 'just add an egg and milk'Hmm! So it's just a packet of flour then.

TroublesomeEx · 22/02/2012 17:02

The Asda smart price one contains wheat flour, skimmed milk powder and salt.

You only have to add water and an egg.

Tbh, I was surprised, I was expecting it to contain a list of shit as long as your arm, but still, if you're going to the effort of adding eggs and water, why not just make them from scratch.

If you've got kids, milk is always the thing you have plenty of!

usualsuspect · 22/02/2012 17:38

If you have teenagers you never have any milk

sashh · 23/02/2012 06:48

I never see the point - or aunt bessy's puds.

But I do make pancakes on a frequent basis, prbably once or twice a month

TroublesomeEx · 23/02/2012 10:11

usual ah that is a good point!
