to not understand premade 'pancake mix'?

Pancakes: eggs, milk, water, flour - simples?

I know some people can't cook, but if anything, cooking them in the pan is the hardest bit! I was a bit shocked to walk into my local Tesco today and find that they had loads of eggs and flour in stock but had sold completely out of the premade packets......?

Food snob?

Yawn...
You don't "understand" other people's choices, in fact you are "shocked" by them.
Yes, YABU and just a bit of a boring snob.

I love making my own. DH always compliments me on my skill at tossing. Sometimes I get a bit over vigourous with the wrist action and it can end up hitting the ceiling. You can just shake away but I think its worth putting more effort in for the reward of a really nice batter

Bunbaker · 21/02/2012 17:47

"but if you don't like eggs you wouldn't eat a pancake"

  1. Pancakes don't taste of eggs
  2. You can make pancakes without eggs

"I bought some and some premade pancakes that you put in the microwave. Taste the same to me"

There must be something wrong with your taste buds. Bought pancakes are nothing like home made ones.

"But why would I want to make my own when I can get it out of a packet? It's the same thing. I use the ready made cake mixes as well if I need to bake, they're fab. I get so many complements and they taste delish!"

Now, the thing is I don't find ready mix cakes delicious. They have a cloying artificial taste and IMO don't taste anything like as good as a cake made from scratch. I find the idea of ready mix pancake batter a con, designed to fool the unconfident cook into thinking that mixing up pancake batter is a difficult thing to do.

Are you traumatised by cake mix?
Have nightmares about shop sponge cakes?
Horrified by soup in cartons?

There's a lot more shocking things going on...

Just live and let live...

I honestly do think the ready made mixture is nicer than flour and butter and eggs. No idea why and I do normally make my own but when I accidentally bought a packet last year, it was more delicious and lighter.

TrinityRhino · 21/02/2012 17:49

I bought the bottles that you add water to and shake like a twat

I felt like I was cheating

I did it anyway

I didn't want to make smegging pancakes

I dont want to mix flour and eggs and then have to clean bowls etc

I'm an arse who didn't want to do pancake day

but I bought the bottles, added water, shook it like a twat, poured, cooked

voila happy kids, me only slightly pushed

I only burnt one and threw another on the floor Hmm wasnt too bad

cornsilkteamdixon · 21/02/2012 17:51

I agree with yellowraincoat. Packet mix is nicer.

OldGreyWiffleTest · 21/02/2012 17:58

Ah well, I'm just about to pour the milk into the mix, shake, cook, wash the container and put it into the recycling. Lazy, lazy me !

southeastastra · 21/02/2012 17:59

we have this thread every year don't we, usually icod starts it Grin

tougholdbird · 21/02/2012 17:59

I work all day, loathe cooking, don't have flour in the house, wouldn't know where to start making my own mix. But I don't want my kids to miss out. YABU.

diddl · 21/02/2012 18:01

I think that if you don´t bake & don´t have the ingredients & wouldn´t use them again if you bought them in just for pancakes, why not?

JaneMare · 21/02/2012 18:02

i'm denying all knowledge it's Shrove Tuesday and not making pancakes at all

Grin
hattymattie · 21/02/2012 18:02

bykers that Jamie Oliver recipe didn't have eggs in. Did you miss them or is it really like that. My husband's french - I never make pancakes - he does. He whisks it all together in a jiffy - just mixing bowl and fork no blender. We call 'em crepes here don't ya know. Smile

TrinityRhino · 21/02/2012 18:04

I would have done that jane but the bastard wonderful school gave them pancakes today

they knew, not making them wasn't an option Grin

Slartybartfast · 21/02/2012 18:07

now some of my dc's friends are having savoury pancakes Shock

tht is unreasonable too much to ask

ReduceRecycleRegift · 21/02/2012 18:08

I bought some last year when we were snowed in and they were the ONLY thing left on the shelf in the tiny local shop that I could manage to slide to with an ill baby

tasted like plastic! awful stuff!

I worked in a supermarket and people would ask you if you had any premade X or Y, and knowing there were literally TWO ingredients to the thing I'ld say no but try to direct them to the 2 ingredients that simply had to be mixed together and they would look at me like I was bonkers! so odd! what a strange attitude we have to food in this country where people trust processed ready made more than very simple home made!

DilysPrice · 21/02/2012 18:13

Right, you've all been so bloody smug about the power of intuition and the pure simplicity of just knowing when it's right, and my scales are up on a high shelf and weigh a tonne, so I'm going to try making pancakes by eye, and if it's a disastrous failure and my DCs cry and/or mock me, it will be all your fault.

And why didn't anyone post the egg-free crepe recipe before I trogged out to the shops to get the eggs which I'd forgotten?

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 21/02/2012 18:17

I picked up a cheapy mix and when I read add milk and an egg thought, what's the point. I bake so have flour eggs and milk in usually so used a tablespoon and ladled 4 big spoons into the blender with half a pint of milk and an egg and blitzed, the worst bit is the production line of three frying pans on the go for DH and DS's demands, can't keep up ffs

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 21/02/2012 18:19

oh then I did it all again cos one batch just was not enough Hmm

usualsuspect · 21/02/2012 18:19

I don't have to add milk to my 7p mix , just an egg and water

Slartybartfast · 21/02/2012 18:19

i make my family wait, cook one at a time, mind you i normally dont get one

KatieScarlett2833 · 21/02/2012 18:23

Not once today either or work or at home has anyone mentioned the P word.

NoJusticeJustUs · 21/02/2012 18:28
