to not understand premade 'pancake mix'?

Pancakes: eggs, milk, water, flour - simples?

I know some people can't cook, but if anything, cooking them in the pan is the hardest bit! I was a bit shocked to walk into my local Tesco today and find that they had loads of eggs and flour in stock but had sold completely out of the premade packets......?

Food snob?

I just chuck a load of flour, milk and eggs in and whisk til it's right consistency no need for scales.

yellowraincoat · 21/02/2012 18:43

Food snobbery is dull. Dull dull dull.

My parents NEVER cooked so I had no idea how. Some people just don't. Why take the piss?

BodaciousTatas · 21/02/2012 18:44

I brought premade.

No washing upSmile

KatieScarlett2833 · 21/02/2012 18:46

It is dull yellow .

I never cook unless I absolutely have to and If there were a parallel universe where I was compelled to make pancakes, I'd be down 7p in a heartbeat.

upahill · 21/02/2012 18:46

Food snob? Possibly. But perhaps you've never been asked for pancakes at 6.30am on a child's birthday.

Do you say, "Not bleedin' likely. Have some cocopops."

Or do you say, "Pancakes? Of course, darling. Won't be a minute."

Personally I would say 'ha ha ha ha, now seriously here's your breakfast!

GobHoblin · 21/02/2012 18:47

If you only have a pound in your purse, and no eggs... i knew my dd would be talking about them at school but couldnt afford to buy eggs this week.. smart price batter, happy days. Is that ok?

yellowraincoat · 21/02/2012 18:48

No fucker gets pancakes at 6.30 in the morning, whether it's their birthday, Christmas or they're on their deathbed.

Besides cocopops are bloody delicious.

BodaciousTatas · 21/02/2012 18:54

Oh and not only did I not use premade mix I brought premade pancakes.

droves · 21/02/2012 19:06

Nothing wrong with smart price pancake mix IMO.

It's probably the same stuff as the posh mix.

I use flour ,water, egg , milk...but that's cause I like faffing about .

RosieBooBoo · 21/02/2012 19:10

I don't bake, so have no flour in the house, cheaper to buy the mix than it is flour and having it take up cupboard space. YABU.

mumeeee · 21/02/2012 19:12

Well I just made up the pancake batter and it took about 3 minutes. YADNBU

PamPerdbrat · 21/02/2012 19:41

Just shook mine together and they were bloody lush. And I had nutella in one of them which I've never done. It's a taste sensation! It's all in the filling I think, the pancakes are merely a vessel for delicious and fattening fillings Smile

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 21/02/2012 19:42

that is it, never again.

bought betty crocker shaker mix and it was rubbish..
ended up throwing them away and starting from scratch. Blush

hattymattie · 21/02/2012 19:43

Just saw on Eastenders - Bianca went to buy pancake mix and Tyler said he'd make them the proper way! Grin

Hullygully · 21/02/2012 19:44

I can recommend adult literacy classes, OP.

yellowraincoat · 21/02/2012 19:45

I just had to go to Sainsburys to buy a bloody frying pan cos I had forgotten I chucked mine out.

Most expensive pancake day EVER, I could have had loads of 7p mix for the price of that pan.

wigglesrock · 21/02/2012 19:45

Its yummy, and I don't have scales or flour in my house, in fact I think the baby is using the whisk as a teether at the minute. I can cook, I don't want to [shrug]. I'm a heater uper, but I can clean like no-ones business - different strokes etc.

ash6605 · 21/02/2012 19:48

I've used the premade stuff purely because it's cheaper than buying eggs and flour if there's none already in the cupboards Blush

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 21/02/2012 19:49

You could have just revived the thread from last year, or the one before or the one before that...

There are plenty of reasons people buy the mix - I hope you have enough answers to satisfy you...

gemma4d · 21/02/2012 19:50

I used my special-offer pancake mix to whip up some pancakes for DD1 while DD2 (tired baby) was in a terrible mood. Strangely I felt a better parent for having the ready made pack - otherwise do I let DD2 cry while I weigh out flour etc, or do I give up and make DD1 go without? So YABU.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 21/02/2012 19:51

Ash - no need for the Blush There are plenty of people around thinking the same thing I'm sure.

It really doesn't matter how you make them or what you make them with - so long as the kids enjoyed them.

theinets · 21/02/2012 20:00

anyone who buys ready mix is just ignorant. ridiculous how you would spend more money when the basic thing is so easy to make. convenience gone mad - says it all about the must have it all generation.

maybenow · 21/02/2012 20:01

i wish i could buy the liquid batter you get in cartons in the US here.. i often fancy a pancake or two for breakfast but don't want to make a whole 'batch'.

batching is fine if there are at least 3 of you or more but dh doesn't like them much so i'm on my own (and don't want to be a complete pig).

Shoopaloop · 21/02/2012 20:03

I buy American pancake mix, because I never seem to get them right.

For English pancakes / crepes, I wouldnt bother. They're so bleedin' easy!

PinkPepper · 21/02/2012 20:07

my mum gave me some of that premade stuff before and I somehow completly messed it up, pancakes went really weird. I much prefer making it from scratch. My measuring jug has lines for flour. I do all ingredients in jug and then just pour each pancake out of jug.

I do buy premade frozen yorkshire puddings because our oven is shite and I can never get them to rise.

Got to be a jif squeezy lemon on pancake day though.
