to not understand premade 'pancake mix'?

Pancakes: eggs, milk, water, flour - simples?

I know some people can't cook, but if anything, cooking them in the pan is the hardest bit! I was a bit shocked to walk into my local Tesco today and find that they had loads of eggs and flour in stock but had sold completely out of the premade packets......?

Food snob?

My pancake mix cost 7p from Asda so I'm lazy and tight Grin

LifeIsButtercream · 21/02/2012 17:30

DoUntoOtters - I'd say 'bring on the pancakes' (time available permitting) and maybe make double mixture out of pure greed

Meh. We have a thread like this every year.... I like not having to weigh or measure anything, and not having to clean out the blender afterwards. So shoot me.

southeastastra · 21/02/2012 17:31

i was going to get some ready made but it was £1.40! and only a quarter full Grin yes i know you have to shake it

MissCoffeeNWine · 21/02/2012 17:31

Why do you weigh out flour for pancakes? I can just about get it for cakes and stuff, but I've never owned kitchen scales and I bake all the time.

Abcinthia · 21/02/2012 17:31

I have a pancake mix for later today.

But I've made bagels and cakes today from scratch and tomorrow I am making cookies and cheese scones.

I really cannot be bothered to make pancakes from scratch as well. I just want to add some milk to a container of pancake mix and shake it together. If that makes me lazy, then so be it.

southeastastra · 21/02/2012 17:32

flippin eck 7P! i couldn't find any cheaper, there was a big gap Grin

usualsuspect · 21/02/2012 17:32

I don't even like pancakes Grin

peeriebear · 21/02/2012 17:32

I do pancakes as a "Shit, there's no bread or cereal" breakfast, no weighing/measuring, just bung it together and mix it up.

Sevenfold · 21/02/2012 17:32

Euphemia was just going by your post, no need to be rude.

usualsuspect · 21/02/2012 17:33

Yeah asda smart price mix was only 7p

McHappyPants2012 · 21/02/2012 17:34

I now have a kitchen full of flour and dishes to do.... So now I wish I bought the microwaveable ones

cornsilkteamdixon · 21/02/2012 17:34

pretty sure that sainsbury's value pancake mix is pennies as well. Not that I buy it or anything.

Slartybartfast · 21/02/2012 17:34

we have this every year, every year i tell you. in fact i think i started it once Shock
pure laziness.
but there are a lot of lazy food mixtures available.

VeronicaSpeedwell · 21/02/2012 17:36

I was just boggling a bit at this myself in my local supermarket. Staff were being sent out to check the storeroom for 'pancake mix' while desperate customers stood gnawing their hands in the aisle, surrounded by eggs and flour. I get why it exists, but I was a bit surprised that it had apparently become quite so popular.

cornsilkteamdixon · 21/02/2012 17:36

'pure laziness' is not making the shitting pancakes in the first place
packet mix is more subtle laziness - lets' be fair

Demonata · 21/02/2012 17:36

I decided to avoid the 'which flour, how much to use' panic and bought the pre-mix stuff. I was feeling very chuffed with my bargain (on offer today)until the 7p mix. My jaw has just hit the table.

PamPerdbrat · 21/02/2012 17:36

You enjoy your pancakes; I'll enjoy my Betty Crocker shake n bake ones! Grin

perceptionreality · 21/02/2012 17:36

Some people's pancakes turn out heavy - they don't have the skill to make 'light' pancakes I hear.

It's not really all that different to pre-made yorkshire puddings though is it?

Slartybartfast · 21/02/2012 17:38

its the busy busy lives we all lead - and perhaps lack of confidence in cooking? to try and be fair

Slartybartfast · 21/02/2012 17:38

true, perception. i wouldnt buy pre made yorkshire puddings either,

LifeIsButtercream · 21/02/2012 17:40

I'm my defense, I'm a rubbish tosser - got one stuck in the extractor fan once...........

Here's a thought - what is in the premade mixes? I wonder if I could market a packet of flour as a 'pancake mix - just add eggs, milk and water'? Grin hehehehe

PamPerdbrat · 21/02/2012 17:41

But why would I want to make my own when I can get it out of a packet? It's the same thing. I use the ready made cake mixes as well if I need to bake, they're fab. I get so many complements and they taste delish!

Slartybartfast · 21/02/2012 17:41

lol at your rubbish tossing.
our dog used to hover expectantly, i have given up tossing now - too many mishaps and my frying pan is too heavy. just turn them

Byeckerslike · 21/02/2012 17:43

I followed a jamie oliver crepe recipe,
1)take a cup out of your cupboard,
2) fill it with flour,
3) pour into bowl,
4) fill said cup with milk,
5) repeat step three
6) mix
7) cook

Makes awesome pancakes, leaving your eggs for poaching and dipping your crispy bacon and pancakes into yum yum yum!
