Have just discovered I live three miles away from a LIDL, yeah I know but I don't get out much!

Planning to go these this week. What should I buy?

What is good - am thinking loads of stuff!

The literal bucket of greek yoghurt, so nice!

ISayHolmes · 18/12/2011 18:25

I'm partial to their version of Guylian's praline seashells. Two big boxes for £3 at the minute in my local Lidl. It's been a while since I had the Guylian ones but I swear these are just as good.

Dauphinois Potatoes, they are in a tin, and they are really lovely. Tip out, bake in oven for about 30 minutes, and they are as good as any of the much more expensive versions in the chillers at the main supermarkets.

Grandhighpoohba · 18/12/2011 18:33

potato salad with creme fraiche is the nicest potato salad sold anywhere. They also do very nice cold meats.

Oh, and cheap Prossecco, very nice!

OpinionatedMum · 18/12/2011 18:35

I have only just popped my lidl cherry too. So far impressed with the nappies and chocolate.

DorisIsMerryOnChristmasSprits · 18/12/2011 18:36

Bars of (real) chocolate, nappies if your dc are in them. Sparkling water, Oh and we also buy their oven chips as they are 60p for 1kg Blush.

We sometimes buy cashews etc as well.

Jars of pasta sauce, juice, squash.

Fresh pizza, pasta, cheese.

Whatever they have on special, eg school supplies, camping, art

Coffee, biscuits, sweets.

Loobyloo1902 · 18/12/2011 18:50

I just noticed that their own brand nappies got even better recently!

Also good for dried fruits, great in porridge at this time of the year.

TheAvocadoOfWisdom · 18/12/2011 18:55

german christmas goodies. Gingerbread house kits for 4.99, identical to waitrose 13.99 version. big bags of lebkuchen and pfeffernusse. lovely stollen. the best chocolate coins (and chocolate notes) for 99p. gluwein.

Lorna99 · 18/12/2011 18:56

I like their chorizo but it isn't as cheap as it used to be. Sometimes they have it on offer and I go and buy about 8 of them.

coccyx · 18/12/2011 18:58

is the fruit and veg any good.?

PeppaPigandGeorge · 18/12/2011 18:59

Nappies!! I have been doing a lidl shop for a while now, but only recently braved the nappies. All the continental christmas stuff is fab, as avocado says.

We buy Lidl brand Special K red berries, which is really nice.

Also washing powder - I bought their "formil" for the first time recently and was really impressed that it's a fraction of the price of Ariel, smells the same, and works the same.

MosEisley · 18/12/2011 19:00

I love Lidl and have been going since the last recession in the early 90s. I recommend their jam (herbietea is right that the cherry is best but leave some for me), chocolate, 'parma' ham and cold meats, boxed juice, fruit and veg, crisps, butter, milk.

MosEisley · 18/12/2011 19:01

Yes fruit and veg is fine if you are selective and don't mind exactly what you buy. I.e. sometimes they are out of stock / it doesn't look that great.

Nappies, chocolate,Putinov vodka but avoid gravy granuals, they're very hard core.

Lorna99 · 18/12/2011 19:20

I don't think Lidl is that downmarket at all. Most of their stuff isn't that cheap. The big supermarkets value ranges are far more cheap and nasty. Most of Lidl's stuff is high quality stuff at mid quality prices.

Billwoody · 18/12/2011 19:26

Their smoked salmon is excellent and about half the price of JS/Tesco. Parma ham is also good. My absolute favourite thing that they sometimes have in is pomelo. It's like a big grapefruit - tastes like grapefruit but not as juicy so you can take all the pith and skin off and the skin of the crescents - is lovely on it's own or added to salads, cous cous etc.

moondog · 18/12/2011 19:29

God I love Lidl.
Chorizo, sliced meat, good cheese and youghurt.
As I type, dh is shredding celeriac from Lidl for dinner.

And so quiet!
Wide aisles, not too much choice.
Just peace.

Even some of the wine tolerable and I am a major wine ponce.

Tomato puree, passata and pasta sauces
Chocolate hazelnut spread - nicer than nutella
peanut butter
Fruit and veg
Sandwich bags (we get through a lot of them and they are really good quality)
Large packs of wafer thin honey roast ham - under £3 and really good quality-and not full of water like many of the brand names.

Interesting about the nappies...first baby due in 2012 so will definitely be checking those out.

NonnoMum · 18/12/2011 19:59

Their eggs are pretty good value.

Butter is a bit cheaper than main supermarkets.

Yes to oven chips. Their sliced loaves at 85p. Prosecco at 4.99.
