...to admit to being a LIDL virgin?

Have just discovered I live three miles away from a LIDL, yeah I know but I don't get out much!

Planning to go these this week. What should I buy?

What is good - am thinking loads of stuff!

Take a debit card or cash - don't know if it's all of them but ours doesn't take credit cards.
Sondey shortbread rings are gorgeous.

Sparklingbaubles · 18/12/2011 20:05

Their tinfoil, jaffa cakes, Bourbon Vanilla Ice Cream, American french Fries.

They always have an array of stuff in the centre aisle that is amusingly random. Socket sets, welding kits, motorcycle wear amongst other things. Grin

Lorna99 · 18/12/2011 20:19

They always seem to have angle grinders on special offer.

Don't think any Lidls take credit cards. I've seen a few people get caught out by that.

Sparklingbaubles · 18/12/2011 20:22

Grin at angle grinders Lorna. I have to look at the random stuff when I go in just in case I desperately need a welding kit that week!

I think they take debit cards.

troisgarcons · 18/12/2011 20:22

OH FFS - would you post about going to Tesco for the first time?

Here's a clue - shake off your pseudo middle class aspirations and step in the door. Then LOOK at what you need. Put it in your trolly. And - here is a moment of revelation - take it to the checkout and pay for it.

Sparklingbaubles · 18/12/2011 20:24

Blimey. Who pissed on your chips trois?

Lorna99 · 18/12/2011 20:25

Remember to take a pound coin for a trolley. Lower class types shop there and they don't trust them to return them without a financial incentive.

troisgarcons · 18/12/2011 20:27

baubles I cant believe anyone is too thick to know how to enter a supemarket and put things in a basket.

Sparklingbaubles · 18/12/2011 20:29

I think the OP was wanting to know if anyone could recommend any of Lidl's --lower class- merchandise. Grin

Plus they don't have baskets. Wink

I love Aldi and Lidl, I shop there most of the time. The only things I need to buy elsewhere are specific things for recipes occaisionally (like flaked almonds and the like) and Humzingers which the kids have in their lunchboxes. Aldi do cheesestrings now (I know people don't like cheesestrings but my kids do).

Diamondback · 18/12/2011 20:34

Ooh, the green chillis stuffed with feta (in the chilled section) are gorgeous! I'm going to go eat some now... Then make my shopping list for tomorrow, with everyone's suggestions on!

Also, they do 'Light' versions of Frosties and Honey Nut flakes - still not mega-healthy, I'm sure, but a third less sugar than the standard ones...

And agreed - the nappies are great. I bought some huggies instead recently (had a voucher) and they were leak-tastic! Have gone back to Lidl 'Toujours'.

south345 · 18/12/2011 20:38

I only nip to our lidl if I fancy a change couldn't do a full shop there.

Tried the nappies the other week they feel ok and no leaks so far but ds2's bum seems to only like pampers active fit any others make his bum red!

GoingForGoalWeight · 18/12/2011 20:39

I popped my Lidl cherry in the Summer and bought their Suddenly parfum, similiar to Coco Mademoiselle, £2.99 a bottle, Lovely :)

I'm going again this week to get some of the toilet roll already mentioned, gold with reindeers, parma ham mmmm

GoingForGoalWeight · 18/12/2011 20:42

Tescos are everywhere and usually more convenient locations...

shirazyum · 18/12/2011 20:43

For fuck's sake trois!!!! I just wanted to know what was good to avoid wasting cash!! Nice to know you are so rich you can afford to waste money just trying things out though Hmm

Thanks to all of you who can actually read, am editing my list right now (have have put loo rolls with gold stars at the top). Cold meats and chocolate on there too. Good to know re washing powder etc, I get through stacks.

serin · 18/12/2011 20:44

Hmm don't really like Lidl, I seem to spend a lot on a pile of crap and nothing to make a meal with.

They do very nice marzipan for 99p but........

The milk has a peculiar taste, the butter (Lurpak) is often more expensive than in mainstream supermarkets and I dont like their own brand butter.

The fruit and veg in ours look like they have been retrived from a skip.

On the other hand our Aldi is fabulous and since I do not have an NHS job anymore (thanks Dave) it has been a lifeline for us.

llamallama · 18/12/2011 20:45

Our Lidls has just got baskets! I'm very excited about this development

amerryscot · 18/12/2011 20:47

I don't think anyone has mentioned fresh flowers

Sparklingbaubles · 18/12/2011 20:48

Envy at llama with a Lidl with baskets. Shock

Lorna99 · 18/12/2011 20:49

They used to have baskets years ago. I don't know what happened to them, maybe people stole them but I can't see why.

PeppaPigandGeorge · 18/12/2011 20:52

The milk tastes fine. Ditto the butter. Not sure how you can go far wrong with these?

They are particularly good at the longer lasting veg - carrots, onions (v cheap!), potatoes (v.v. cheap - huge sack for £2), butternut squash etc. Peppers are always fine and quite cheap. I agree they can be hit and miss for other fruit and veg - I won't buy grapes there, for example.

I do still go to Sainsburys for basics toilet roll, basics weetabix and basics kitchen roll as these are cheaper than Lidl. Might try the gold stars toilet roll now though....

shirazyum · 18/12/2011 21:10
