Have just discovered I live three miles away from a LIDL, yeah I know but I don't get out much!

Planning to go these this week. What should I buy?

What is good - am thinking loads of stuff!

Sadly was not able to go yesterday so the adventure is now planned for tomorrow. If as a result of this thread all the Christmas loo roll has gone I will stamp my foot and howl.

The list is growing nicely in the meantime. Trying to work out who to give the hoof oil to and looking forward to the chocolate cake!

My DH went to Lidl yesterday and they'd had a sudden run on Champagne - it was sold out! Xmas Sad

Sparklingbaubles · 21/12/2011 11:31

It got rave reviews I think Diamond. Posh people must have dashed in for it!

They had no Christmas loo roll in our Lidl. Sad

RustyBear · 21/12/2011 12:08

I've just been and someone was loading about 30 cases of champagne into a car. I thought they were planning a very merry Christmas, but the checkout guy said they it was probably someone from another branch that had run out. He didn't know about the Which report, but he said he thought it was now down to £9.99.

They had plenty of reindeer toilet roll, though, and now so do I....

TheThingUpstairs · 21/12/2011 12:23

Queen Margot is very nice if you like Baileys.

TararaBOOMdeay · 21/12/2011 21:06

What's wrong with office equipment for Christmas?

Was in today, dh doesn't know it yet but he's bought me a labeller so I can indulge my inner Monica

TararaBOOMdeay · 21/12/2011 21:07

Also had to stop myself sniggering overhearing a bloke on a mobile telling his missus to 'just stop spending, we've got enough' all the while loading a trolley with case after case after case of Stella Xmas Grin

I don't like the smell of their washing up stuff. Haven't liked pasta sauces or sweetcorn either.

Sparklingbaubles · 21/12/2011 21:17

Their sweetcorn is vile isn't it HoHo? Someone on here said to avoid the tinned octopus too. Wink

My DS loves their jaffa cakes-he won't eat the real thing any more.

shirazyum · 21/12/2011 22:14

The excitement is mounting in the Shiraz household...

We always split our shopping trips into two, Lidl first for fruit, veg, hovis bread, milk, pasta, passata, tinned tomatoes, cheese, cleaning products, toilet rolls, basically most staple things apart from meat. Got some lovely smoked salmon the other day. Quite a number of items are well known brands. We don't really eat ready made stuff anyway but probably wouldn't get that kind of thing there. I got 4 large bags of shopping last weekend, loads of ingredients for Xmas meals and a few treats and it only cost £50, I am always shocked by the price at the till as I always expect it to cost more. We get the rest of the shopping from a bigger supermarket. My husband laughs at how much I endorse Lidl now as in his words my "snout would go into the air" at the very suggestion that I should shop there a few years ago!

Traceymac2 · 21/12/2011 22:50

Oh and olive oil/ balsamic vinegar.

GoingForGoalWeight · 21/12/2011 23:00

Excited for shiraz pending trip to LId Xmas Grin

Please come back and tell us what you bought even if it was just a box of eggs :)

GoingForGoalWeight · 21/12/2011 23:00

Lidl* Blush

shirazyum · 21/12/2011 23:06

Have a feeling that it will not be just a box of eggs - need stuff for a full cooked breakfast to bribe males who will be going to a VEGETARIAN house for Christmas lunch Xmas Grin

This could be the 2012 shopping list hunt - what did you buy in ***

reindeer scented toilet rolls, suddenly perfume, KP dry roasted nuts - big bag - 99p, flowers etc :)

KD0706 · 21/12/2011 23:24

Inspired by this thread I went to lidl for the first time today.

There was nothing Christmassy at all. And no loo roll. So none of the nice Christmas loo roll I'd hoped for.

I did get jam which looked nice, some cold meat and cheese. A couple of rice puddings which DH loved so much he ate them both tonIght and has decreed I need to go back for more. This is after he was incredibly scathing about me going there in the first place.

I forgot to take bags so had to buy a couple, which was hardly the end of the world but worth trying to remember reusable bags if going there. And a pound for the trolley.

LostVagueness · 21/12/2011 23:41

Lidl is brilliant. Random Geek stuff, great cheese, lovely cooked meats. They usually have decent vegetables. Loads of anti pasti and great tins of every bean in the world. Pasta and rice, spices, salt and pepper.
We also get biscuits, lovely little milk chocolate bars, boxed juice and iced tea, eggs, butter and milk, tea and coffee. Bread, croissants, bruchetta. Crisps and snacks, yogurts, household cleaners and washing powder, nappies....They also do some great wine if you know what you're looking for and the beer and spirits are pretty decent too. I'm quite a fan. I'd never be able to eat this well from Tesco. The only thing I'm not happy with is the meat and fish. No idea where it comes from and none of it organic or even free range at my local store.

Just read this post back to myself.....never thought I'd be this excited, aged 35 about my feckin shopping list. I used to be cool.....honest!

Time for a drink!

HoHoOpotomus · 22/12/2011 10:41

I was last at LIDL a couple of weeks ago and the sign announcing proudly that "We now have baskets for your convenience" made me smile.

Whatever next - an Express Lane????? Having just popped in for a bottle of champagne (we were going to a party) I would have liked one - had to queue behind 2 huge trollies and a couple of those new fangled basket devices.

HoHoOpotomus · 22/12/2011 10:43

yes sweetcorn is vile sparkling - but it's trial and error with Lidl. Some things they do really well, come things they dont.

SusanneLinder · 22/12/2011 10:59

Lidl nappies are the dogs wotsits. My DD has tried all the expensive ones for my DGC, and Lidl nappies are the only ones that dont leak.
