Have just discovered I live three miles away from a LIDL, yeah I know but I don't get out much!

Planning to go these this week. What should I buy?

What is good - am thinking loads of stuff!

IdRatherBeInDrinkingMulledWine · 22/12/2011 14:31

i love LIDLs i'll be going there tonght for my wine :)

HoHoOpotomus · 22/12/2011 14:32

Susanne DP is off across town to deliver some presents today and he will be passing a Lidl. We don't have one near us but go to them when visiting friends/family who live by one. DP is on strict instructions to pop into LIDL for nappies Xmas Grin

shirazyum · 22/12/2011 19:57

Well I have popped my cherry!

Like many first times there was a little disappointment; no moose steaks, no pretty loo roll, no champagne, not even an angle grinder. Xmas Sad

But i have loads of nuts, fabric softener, coffee (who knows but thought I would try it!), some fizzy drinks, squash, loads of cold meats, salmon, lamb shanks and best of all some sparkling perry!!! This at 99p a bottle, with an almost illegible label is to take for Christmas day at my sister's...

We are thinking posh bags, very chilled, present it as though special, insist we all share this treat...wait until everyone has made polite and grateful comments about the 'fizz'...and then tell them we know it is crap and what we paid!! What do you reckon?

Great shiraz :)

Should have asked sales assistant for toilet tissue. I'm going to get some champane too.Let me know what fab cond is like please? :)

peggyblackett · 22/12/2011 20:55

Fabric conditioner is good - blue one is nicest IMO.

AitchTwoOHoHoHo · 23/12/2011 08:44

i drink decaff and their instant decaff is heaps nicer than waitrose's imo.

Sparklingbaubles · 23/12/2011 08:52

Hi Aitch. My Mum drinks Morrison's Decaf and it is horrid. I may get her some from Lidl.

AitchTwoOHoHoHo · 23/12/2011 08:55

do, it's really good. in fact the reason i first tried out aldi/lidl etc was that i was at a friends' for dinner and everyone was saying how nice the coffee was and it turned out to be from aldi. the germans do love their coffee, i suppose.

AitchTwoOHoHoHo · 23/12/2011 08:56

home bargains is also excellent imo, 4 bottles of san pellegrino sparkling water for a quid plus loads of camping/packed lunch bits and bobs.

Sparklingbaubles · 23/12/2011 08:59

Is decaf coffee generally a bit mixed Aitch? I think even Mum doesn't like some of it but she has to have decaf.

Grin
Traceymac2 · 23/12/2011 09:08

The only nice decaff I have ever tried is the instant Dowe Egberts with the blue label. I have never found a good decaff.

Traceymac2 · 23/12/2011 09:09

That should say a good ground decaff!

Sparklingbaubles · 23/12/2011 09:21

If I make me a normal instant coffee and Mum a Morrisons Decaf i can tell which is hers by the horrible smell. Sad

AitchTwoOHoHoHo · 23/12/2011 09:42

i only drink decaff at home because i bounce off the walls otherwise, taylors of harrogate ground is quite nice imo, which is weird because i don't like their caffeinated coffee much. tbh i think with the decaff thing you just have to be grateful if you get something palatable at all.

Sparklingbaubles · 23/12/2011 09:45

Is it the caffeine that makes coffee taste nice then? Am i being thick? I would rather not drink the muck my Mum does. Grin

AitchTwoOHoHoHo · 23/12/2011 09:50

well there is still caffeine in decaff, just not as much. and as i understand it they have to do terrible, terrible things to the coffee to take it out. Grin

Sparklingbaubles · 23/12/2011 11:00

Oh that would account for the smell then. Poor coffee. Sad

WhyAlwaysBoris · 23/12/2011 11:19

I love Lidl! I live 3 seconds from a massive sainsburys and instead walk 2 miles to Lidl if i can't be bothered to get the car out!
I don't know if it depends on the area but where i am the fruit and veg is of a better quality than the big supermarkets V Cheap organic carrots, onions, bananas etc
Washing powders, bleach etc are all better than big brands and half the price, Breakfast cereals taste identical and are a third of the price
one word of warning - STAY AWAY FROM THE NOUGAT PILLOWS- this is allegedly a breakfast cereal but tastes like squashed ferrero rocher and my DH maintains that its addictive nature must be down to the secret inclusion of crack cocaine....you have been warned!

AitchTwoOHoHoHo · 26/12/2011 18:51

can confirm lidl panettone, turkish delight and luxury christmas pud (£2.99) were delicious. not delicious for the price, just delicious. i think it's not so much that i love Lidl, just that i don't feel ripped-off by it, which i really, really do in tesco or sainsbos etc.

shirazyum · 26/12/2011 20:05

Sad to say that gammon steaks were very salty and a bit gristlely...but the 99p Sparkling Perry was really nice mixed with fruit juices!!!

new zealand sauvigon blanc #5.49
garlic in a little basket
olive oil
tomato soup 17p
sunflower seed bread
gorgonzola
cold meats

ds2 enjoyed the mussels

the list is endless

also one of the guys who works there seems to be extremely nice to me - he might fancy me but wouldn't assume that of course Xmas Blush certainly a very funny vibe if I see him in there or he checks out my order - he is nice but not really my type.

AitchTwoOHoHoHo · 26/12/2011 21:11

oh and on christmas day my sister did the jamie oliver prawn and salmon salady thing with bloody mary dressing (unbefuckinglievably nice) and used a prawn ring from lidl that had been in my mum's freezer for a month. they were absolutely delicious, so am deffo going to investigate those.

AitchTwoOHoHoHo · 26/12/2011 21:12

this one seriously tasty.

Ilovejellysweets · 27/12/2011 10:48

Raspberry jam - closest thing to homemade
Large bin bags (super )
70% fair trade plain chocolate - the real macoy
Baby wipes - you'll not find better
Hygienic wipes ". "
Anti wrinkle cream/moisturisers V cheap and good
Tile cleaner smelt like horse urine - don't bother unless you really love horses!
