Have just discovered I live three miles away from a LIDL, yeah I know but I don't get out much!

Planning to go these this week. What should I buy?

What is good - am thinking loads of stuff!

Their Christmas deli stuff is really good, we had mussels with garlic breadcrumbs, crab meat, smoked salmon and parma ham tonight for tea along with heated up part baked bread rolls, although I think the bread was from Mr T's. I was trying to clear out the fridge before getting some more shopping tomorrow, we don't normally have such cocktail party dinners for Sunday dinner!

Also brilliant are the packs of 4 massive chocolate muffins for about a pound and their tradional tea loaf which is gorgeous with butter on it.

soaccidentprone · 18/12/2011 23:44

Their champagne at £12.99 a bottle came top of 'Which' magazines Decembers taste test.

Pumpkin seed bread rolls are yummy!

Their croissants are lovely.

Blackcurrant high juice.
Apple juice (not concentrate)

Most stuff is great, though my dh and ds's said the fresh pizza was 'gross', but that was 2 years ago.

The only thing different in Lidl is that you have to put everything back in your trolley and then use the special counters to repack your stuff as they like to get your stuff through as quickly as possible, and also the checkouts aren't designed for you to be able to do your packing there.

Dark chocolate covered marzipan - yum!

jasper · 18/12/2011 23:48

Everything!

AitchTwoOHoHoHo · 18/12/2011 23:51

i love it because it is so manageable in size with two annoying kids, but then i speak as someone who blanks out in bigger stores, the lights send me into a trance. agree with everyone's recommendations... mostly it's great but NEVER get the oatcakes.

fruit and veg always seems to me to be more locally sourced than the big supers as well.

shagmundfreud · 18/12/2011 23:52

They have baskets now.

Avoid pizzas.

Get Greek yogurt and cold meats.

Norweigan smoked salmon is lovely. A bit salty, but fantastic texture.

Herrings in a cream sauce.

Baby wipes.

Their 12.99 champagne won the Which best buy award.

Goats cheese in a roll is lovely and is also an award winner.

Wild boar pate with prunes is LUSH. Nearly ate a whole pack on my own last week. Felt like I was going into liver failure from all the fat. Blush

Lidl brandy butter and brandy cream - great. Tried it last week and thought it was very good. This week will be buying the brandy sauce.

shagmundfreud · 18/12/2011 23:53

Oh, and their own brand fresh orange in the chiller cabinet (1.29 a litre) tastes as good as Tropicana.

sashh · 19/12/2011 07:08

Champagne, chocholate and if you like seafood musscles and lobster.

south345 · 19/12/2011 07:17

Their frozen pizzas are great and sometimes you get 3/4 for about £2.50.

Theas18 · 19/12/2011 08:10

REminds me I need to do a lidl run.

Like most of the stuff. THe fruit and veg is refreshingly seasonal and cheap. I've heard complaints that it doesn't keep as long as big brand produce, but that could be that its ripe when you buy it.....and shock..... not generally over packaged!

Best best best of all as I haev teens that use buckets of the stuff, is the cien 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner at 69p.

I have also been told that Santa may shop there to get exciting germanic looking goodies for stockings that don't immediately scream " recognisable brand from shop X" . But that could just be a rumour....

NinkyNonker · 19/12/2011 08:18

Nappies are fab, Kinder chocolate, dad likes the wine (he is a bit of a buff), real ale etc on offer for DH, veg pretty good...

shagmundfreud · 19/12/2011 08:20

Forgot:

LAMBS LETTUCE!

Where else can you get lambs lettuce for £1 a bag? Beautiful stuff!
(but needs washing before use)

SlinkyBells · 19/12/2011 08:24

The baby wipes are great, always stock up on them when I go (they're big, strong and very wet/don't dry out).

Definitely the dark chocolate.

Oh, if you like spicy pizzas, I 'dare' you to try one of their inferno frozen ones...dp and I struggle and we love our spice!

peggyblackett · 19/12/2011 08:31

Sod MN reviews, surely a moondog endorsement of a supermarket's produce must be the ultimate accolade :o.

I love Lidl. Ditto all the recommendations here, in fact I think the only dodge thing bought there is the Thai green curry paste.

Nasi Goreng from the freezer section is great for lazy evenings.

shagmundfreud · 19/12/2011 10:15

awards

Food awards - you'll see that Lidl has a respectable number on the list.

Diamondback · 19/12/2011 10:25

Ooo, and the moose steaks (in the freezer section)! Lean, thick and v tasty, like a good beef steak, mmmmm Xmas Smile

GoingForGoalWeight · 19/12/2011 14:20

Went to LIdl again today bought the gold reindeer and snow icicle toilet rolls, baby wipes, a magazine etc

Thanks MN :)

shirazyum · 19/12/2011 21:42

I hope you did not empty out the one I am going to tomorrow (if I have been paid). I am ridiculously excited; I did tell you I don't get out much Xmas Grin

Did anyone mention the perfume? 3 or 4 quid and beaten some of the poshies in a smell test.

I'm hoping the cardboard colour-in house I bought from "The Random Aisle" will go down well on the morning of the 25th...

GoingForGoalWeight · 20/12/2011 21:21

Yes i did. i'm wearing it now Grin, 'Suddenly' - Coco Mademoiselle.

Sparklingbaubles · 20/12/2011 23:04

Mine is called Suddenly Madame Glamour or something.

No angle grinders today. But there was a huge wooden fuck off display cabinet for collectables. Confused

I didn't get one. Grin

GoingForGoalWeight · 20/12/2011 23:21

Hoof oil, it's a household must have :)

2rebecca · 20/12/2011 23:33

Their luxury muesli both fruit and fruit and nut are good quality. It's about £1.50 a bag.

JustRedbin · 20/12/2011 23:38

LIDL is the best shop ever. Where else can you buy a block of cheese and a unicycle? The own brand cider at under £2 is worth a go too.

Sparklingbaubles · 21/12/2011 09:13

I don't have hoof oil (or a horse) Going. What could I be using it for?

soaccidentprone · 21/12/2011 10:06

We got a great electric guitar and amp from there a couple of year ago!!!

Their chocolate cake is gorgeous (tried for the 1st time a couple of days ago - nice than the slightly dry one we got from Waitrose)

I just love the randomness of some if the stuff you can get - like replacement car headlight bulbs, crafty stuff, bedding shoes, skiwear and then the other week they had a drumkit.

It's a bit like a shopping lucky dip Smile

I saw my exMEP and his wife in there a bit ago, but no celebrities yet.
