To think size 10 is slim?

I realise it depends on how tall someone is, I'm 5'8" and a size 10 which in my head is a slim combination but when I look in the mirror I look quite chunky, it is driving me insane as I can't work out whether a 10 isn't actually that slim or whether it's some kind of weird dysmorphia where I look bigger than I am. Can I just add I am not fishing, just wanted some opinions and wondered if anyone else has a similar thing

In dress patterns, the measurements are still the same as in the 50s and 60s, cos I've got a few of my mum's old patterns.

It's a vanity thing.

same as M&S doing this daft survey thing saying women's waists are thicker now in proportion to their waists.
which is why I can't get a skirt that fits on both my hips and waist - say a size 12, which is invariably massive on my waist and tight on my hips. Hmm

Pandemoniaa · 03/06/2011 13:18

I'm much the same height and a size 8/10 with quite small bones. Apparently I'm very slim but actually, I'm hopeless at looking at my body and making rational assumptions about size. But what I would say is that anyone of 5'9 who is a size 10 cannot be fat.

Shannaratiger · 03/06/2011 13:24

I'm 5'10" and a size 10 I keep looking in the mirror and thinking I look fat even though I tried soo hard to get down from a size 14. I weigh about 11 stone 10, but I don't know what I should be for my height.

TeaAndABiscuit · 03/06/2011 13:35

I make your BMI 20.5. That's very slim.

PeterSpanswick · 03/06/2011 15:03

You sound fine to me! I was a size 10/12 at one point, weighing about 9st 3 at a height of 5"5 and I never thought I looked fat. Now post-pregnancy I weigh about 8st 12 and am a size 8 but everything seems to have narrowed after having ds and looking back at photos, I can't believe the physical difference in a loss of only five or so pounds! It's definitely all relative and depends entirely on your build.

I'd look fat at a size ten, as I just don't carry weight well.
I have a really round face and big thighs.

Or if you are 4ft 2.

foreverondiet · 03/06/2011 16:05

Size 10 is slim, unless maybe you are 5 foot tall.

At 5 foot 8 its definately slim/thin.

How do you define size 10 though - by measurements or by the high street as it varies between shops!

I think size 10 is 34 bust, 36 hips and 28 waist....

motherinferior · 03/06/2011 16:07

I'm 5 foot tall and size 10 and nine stone and really not slim at all. In fact I am a bit of a fatso.

NettoSuperstar · 03/06/2011 16:17

I'm 5'2, I'd still look fat as a size 10 though because of my big round head.
I have a double chin now at a size 8 and weighing less than 8 stone.

TheCrackFox · 03/06/2011 16:18

Motherinferioer - your BMI is infact within the healthy range. Stop putting yourself down as you are not a "bit of a fatso".

motherinferior · 03/06/2011 16:27

No, really, I am a fatso. I've always been a fatso.

Motherinferior - you are not a fatso. Any doctor would agree with me. Start being nice to yourself.

My problem is other people (well, mainly my mother but also my MIL and quite a few ex boyfriends) looking at me and seeing a fat person.

The other thing about clothes is that they have got wider and shorter -- does anyone else notice? As a teen I always wore my dad's cast off XL & XXL shirts, because i liked the length of them, they weren't like tents at all, maybe because I have broad shoulders. Now XXL shirts are too short on me (I haven't become taller!). Yet incredibly baggy. They are literally wider and shorter than they were 30 yrs ago. XXL used to mean lots of length and breadth, now it means lots and lots and lots of breadth.
I literally need to be buying T-shirt "dresses" nowadays, methinks, in order to get a simple long t-shirt.

microserf · 03/06/2011 19:20

i am 5ft7, and yes, it is definitely slim. clothing cuts though vary so widely between stores - a topshop size 10 is definitely not a next or hobbs size 10!

TigerseyeMum · 03/06/2011 20:57

I am 5ft4 weigh 8.5 stone and I am size 8-10. I know I am slim, I feel quite good and have lost half a stone in the past few weeks just by cutting out the crap, yet when I look in the mirror I see someone who is fat. Even when I was 7stone 4 and a size 6-8 I saw a fat person in the mirror. I definitely don't have an eating disorder, but wish I could see 'me' when I look in the mirror.

This is me. Exactly me, I could have written this. My therapist used to say I had body dysmrphic disorder but I said he was wrong, he hadn't seen me in a bikini Grin

The good side of getting older is I no longer care about it like I used to. But I have tried hard the last few weeks to get down to 8.5 stone, and I feel better for it.

OP, you are not fat, you are slim. It's very subjective, so why sweat it? Life s short.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 03/06/2011 21:08

strandedbear I'm exactly the same. Some photos of me are ok some look awful! I feel mildly better about myself now ive been stretched those 2 inches taller but having babies has definitely made me wobblier.
