To think size 10 is slim?

joogle · 31/05/2011 15:46

I realise it depends on how tall someone is, I'm 5'8" and a size 10 which in my head is a slim combination but when I look in the mirror I look quite chunky, it is driving me insane as I can't work out whether a 10 isn't actually that slim or whether it's some kind of weird dysmorphia where I look bigger than I am. Can I just add I am not fishing, just wanted some opinions and wondered if anyone else has a similar thing

Think your bmi is 20.5, so most definitely slim

I think I have the opposite kind of body dysmorphia, the person in the mirror looks a helluva lot slimmer than the one in pictures Confused

beanlet · 31/05/2011 16:15

Slebs are usually very short as well as being size 4 or whatever. You def sound slim at size 10 for your height. I'm 5'7" and when I'm in the middle of my healthy BMI range I'm a 10, so I'd guess you're at the bottom of your healthy BMI. It's also possible if you're anything like me that you're wide across the front and very slim side on IYSWIM.

Ignore slebs.

TattyDevine · 31/05/2011 16:16

Do you look chunky or do you look "bumpy" or "wobbly" or "flabby"

Because you can be a size 10 and be all those things. But you are still "slim" in terms of how much space you are taking up in the world, so to speak.

If you are wobbly, bumpy, dimply or flabby, then its toning you need, not slimming. You might reduce your body fat percentage in the meantime but then you would increase your muscle mass, replacing fat for lean weight, which is a healthy good thing (within the scope of normal to athletic, anyway)

Is it that you saw yourself without clothes in an unforgiving mirror?

If you see yourself in winter clothes, say jeans and a fitted v-neck, do you still think you are chunky?

beanlet · 31/05/2011 16:17

Shd have been 5'6"...

It's weird, on other people I know that size 10 is slim, but on me it feels massive, in certain shops I can usually fit into a size 8...but then if I'm in somewhere which doesn't cater for boobage cough MANGO I'll just squeeze into a 10 (I don't 'go' by dress size as I know how much it differs by store/year).

I have an 'hourglass' shape normally (fucking impossible to buy clothes that fit properly on the highstreet); 34-24-34, 8st 10lbs (so bmi 20.92) & am 5'4...however am preggo atm so look like a dumpy egg. :)

BelleEnd · 31/05/2011 16:20

You are slender.

I wonder whether you're conciously dieting at the mo? I say that because I have been for a few months, have gone from an 18 to a 12-14 (am 5"11 btw) but I actually feel fatter than ever because I'm thinking about my weight so much more. Doesn't make sense and isn't very healthy...

joogle · 31/05/2011 16:23

No not really in clothes, just in underwear Confused thighs and bum look big and tummy not as flat as I want it (3 dcs)

I look back at famous womens bodies in the 60's & 70's and in my opinion they are much more beautiful and natural than a lot of 'slebs nowadays - there is pressure there and I don't even read magazines!

Threelittleducks · 31/05/2011 16:24

10 is slim - but you are right about the sizes having changed. I'm a 10 in a lot of shops, but definitely a 14 in H&M! And I never used to be :(

Mind you I do have pretty impressive boobage these days.

Ephiny · 31/05/2011 16:24

So you're about in the middle of the 'healthy weight' range for your height (in fact slightly less!) - sounds pretty much perfect to me :) It's unlikely you look very 'chunky' and I don't think you should be worrying about your weight at all. You're not even close to being overweight.

Youcantaffordme · 31/05/2011 16:24

When I was younger 10 was usually the smallest size in the shops - you might see 8 occasionally. You never saw anything labelled 6, 4 or 0, they didn't exist as far as I'm aware. I think they must have relabelled everything because people came in the same range of sizes then as they do now, nothing has changed there.

Isthreetoomany · 31/05/2011 16:25

You are slim. I know how you feel though, as I am a similar size to you but also feel chunky.

BulletWithAName · 31/05/2011 16:25

Joogle- I feel your pain. Everyone tells me I'm slim etc but I don't believe then. I see a lard arse with a disgusting stomach when I look in the mirror. I'm 5' 6.5 9st 8lb and a size 10/12.

CandyS · 31/05/2011 16:25

Sugar! Forgot to add, I used to have an eating disorder & body dysmorphia, but even though I am 'cured' of ED & BDD, I still have a hard time dealing with putting on weight/eating big portions/the way I look etc.
And even when people tell me I'm slim/whatever I laugh it off as them being nice....joogle do you do the same when people compliment you?

TattyDevine · 31/05/2011 16:28

Okay so you are slim and can see it in clothes but you feel like you don't "look good naked", so to speak.

Well, some people don't even look good in clothes so suck it up, cupcake!

Or hit the gym and do some toning stuff and a bit of cardio, clean up your diet and replace some of your fat with a nice smooth tight layer of muscle.

cushionyet · 31/05/2011 16:28

I know exactly what you mean. I'm 5'10, weigh 9 stone, and fit into size 8-10 clothes but I just don't look like I should fit into them. I'm slim on my top half, but my bottom half just looks huge to me. How much do you weigh OP? I think sometimes tall people just don't look as thin as petite slim women.

joogle · 31/05/2011 16:30

Yes I do Candy.

I thought British people were meant to be getting fatter not skinnier but you're right size 6 and 4's popping up verywhere, confusing!

joogle · 31/05/2011 16:32

I started cardio skipping the other day but wet myself due to a weak pelvic floor (ds3 is 6 months old) I was so embarassed even though I was alone, ha!

OP posts:
bananamonkey · 31/05/2011 16:34

Belle that is totally true for me. When I was fat(er) I would have liked to be slimmer but I was confident about the way I looked, loved my clothes and didn't give too much thought about what I ate. I lost a couple of stones and now I honestly can't tell the difference in the mirror, and I am constantly worried about what I eat, am a lot more restrictive about what I can wear and feel depressed in all of my clothes.

ZombiePlan · 31/05/2011 16:36

How toned are you? Do you have good posture? I'm 5'4'' and a size 8-10. But I don't have a toned middle (working on it!) so if I choose my clothes badly I can look pretty chunky. OTOH if I dress well then I can look positively thin.

Have you tried using makeup to give your face contours? I find that having cheekbones seems to make people look automatically thinner. I could be as skinny as a rail, but chubby cheeks make me look, well, chubby all over.

valiumbandwitch · 31/05/2011 16:38

It is slim yes. I'm much shorter than you and would consider size ten slim for me.

Magazines have women convinced that they should hardly be there at all. ONly men are allowed to eat?!

Honeybee79 · 31/05/2011 16:38

I'm the same height as you and used to me a size 10 (hopefully will be again before too long . . . ) and I looked and felt relatively slim. I as happy at that size and didn't want to be any thinner!

Vizzini · 31/05/2011 16:39

I'm 9st 10lb and 5 ft 8". I'm a size 10 (was 14 pre-preg). I don't look anywhere near as thin as I imagined I would if I ever got to a size 10. I was starting to wonder about this too, so I'm glad I'm not the only one. Everyone tells me I look great but I would like to lose more weight to look 'slimmer'.
