To think size 10 is slim?

joogle · 31/05/2011 15:46

I realise it depends on how tall someone is, I'm 5'8" and a size 10 which in my head is a slim combination but when I look in the mirror I look quite chunky, it is driving me insane as I can't work out whether a 10 isn't actually that slim or whether it's some kind of weird dysmorphia where I look bigger than I am. Can I just add I am not fishing, just wanted some opinions and wondered if anyone else has a similar thing

What is your body shape?

there is no question you are very slim , I have a mate who is an 8 but due to being ver pearshape the legs appear a fair bit chunkier than the rest IYSWIM but has a cracking figure non the less , most celebs go to crazy lengths

I was shocked at how Cheryl cole was grilled over her weight to be 'acceptable for hollywood' I mean shes's tiny its insane.

olibeansmummy · 03/06/2011 11:43

I'm a size 10 but only 5'4, although I'd like to be thinner. I think it's probabely because you are comparing yourself to size 0 celebrities (who have probabely been airbrushed). I don't blame you though, I'm the same!

aluvss · 03/06/2011 11:52

I am size 10 and I am overweight.

I am 5"3 and weigh 9st11.

My BMI is over the healthy range.

There are people who are size 10 and slim, these people are usually taller than me!

squishysquashy · 03/06/2011 12:00

I've read quite a few articles over the years where they say shops are changing the fit of the clothes to match the increasing size of the population. Ie a size 10 now is likely to be a bit bigger than it used to be. Hence there's more need for size 6 & 8 clothes (have only seen size 4 on a couple of occassions).

I wore size 10 as a teenager, I was skinny and toned. I am currently wearing size 10 with a bit of baby belly about a stone heavier and definitely less toned. I think the shops that cater for naturally more slim teenagers have smaller size 10s though!

Personally being short any weight gain is quite obvious and my ideal is to have a bmi at the lower end of normal and be fit. Haven't achieved the fit bit too lazy.

squishysquashy · 03/06/2011 12:04

Btw I think the size 0 'thing' is originally an American term and equates to UK dress size 4 if that makes anyone feel better! Obviously size 4 isn't catchy enough for our magazines

AmazingBouncingFerret · 03/06/2011 12:10

Yup you're slim. 5 weeks ago I was 5 foot nothing and a size 12. Didnt think of myself as fat but wasnt tiny. I'm now 5'2" and a size 10 but I still have wobbly bits. Could do with going to a gym

PatriciatheStripper · 03/06/2011 12:12

Back in the day it used to go (roughly) size 10 was a 32" bust, size 12 34", size 14 36" bust and so on. Not many adults needed to go lower than the 10.

There were always a few exceptions, for instance Wallis or Jaeger clothes had a more generous cut, so you would be looking at a size down from your usual.

Niecie · 03/06/2011 12:12

You sound slim to me as well. At my slimmest (a long long time ago sadly) I was 9st 7lb and I am 5' 7", so not much shorter than you and I wouldn't have been able to fit into size 12 trousers easily. I have a big bottom. If you can fit into a size 10 then you are doing very well. If you think you look chunky then I wonder if you just need a bit of toning or whether you should just be happy with what you have got - you think you look chunky in your undies but most people don't see you looking like that and I bet you look great with your clothes on.

I am never sure about clothes apparently being cut bigger these days. I have a couple of size 14 things in my wardrobe from my student days, 20 odd years go and I can still wear them. I wouldn't dream of even trying on a 14 now (sadly an 18 at the moment but working on it).

PatriciatheStripper · 03/06/2011 12:17

I was going to add that I think everything has gone up 2 sizes - thus an 18 is the old 14. Or thereabouts. You prove the point, Niecie.

Kallista · 03/06/2011 12:20

I am 5'4'' and 12st. The weight gain was due to medication, binge-eating and depression (ie lying in bed for days.).
I am a size 16; i think the realistic ideal for me is size 12 as i have an hourglass figure and was never 'boyish' even at less than 8st. Most of all my aim is to be fit and well, with healthy hair and skin.
I would prefer to focus on that than on actual dress size.

tabulahrasa · 03/06/2011 12:24

size 10 at 5 ft 8 is slim

I'm the same height and even when underweight I don't go below a 12

Weloveguineapigs · 03/06/2011 12:32

Now this sizing thing really bugs me.

I am 9 stone 4 and 5 foot 5 inches.

What size would you expect me to be? I would expect me to be a size 10, but I am not, I am a size 12, yet I consider myself to be slim. I can get into a size 10 but it is not comfortable. Irritating it is.

sixkids · 03/06/2011 12:38

im 5,3 and 9st 3 and size 10,feel tall and slim some days and small and fat other days, think its confidence and psychological.

TheBride · 03/06/2011 12:41

Clothes have definitely got bigger. In my early 20's I was a 12/14. Now I'm a 10/12, but I am the same size, or probably slightly larger than back then

PatriciatheStripper · 03/06/2011 12:41

The nuisance is having to take several different sizes into the changing room, because I really never have a clue which will be best. I never buy anything unless it fits comfortably - people squeezed into clothes that are too tight don't look good. It's silly to get hung up on dress size - it's just a number on a label.

trixymalixy · 03/06/2011 12:42

When I Was a size 10, I didn't think I was slim. Now I am a size 14 I can't believe I thought I was fat.

CurlyCasper · 03/06/2011 12:46

joogle I know exactly what you mean. I have slimmed back down to a size 10 and a similar weight, but I'm four inches shorter than you. I am not toned, so I do see a fair bit of chunkiness when I look in the mirror. I spent age 17-27 as a size 6-8, weighing 8 stone, so I guess I compare it to that. I know I am not big, but I remember being so slim that I will always be competing against my younger self.

sugartongue · 03/06/2011 12:48

OP I could be you! I am 5'8" a 10 and although i kind of know I am slim, i feel quite "big" in my head, iykwim.

sugartongue · 03/06/2011 12:48

oh and I'm pretty sure it's the being fairly tall thing that actually makes me feel big

OhBuggerandArse · 03/06/2011 12:51

I'm about the same size, and in exactly the same position. I don't think it's body dysmorphic to be aware of significantly fat bits of my body - I'm not conflicted or upset about it or anything, but they're definitely there! I'm sure that there all sorts of individual things to do with build, etc, that affect how your frame and musculature and fat bits all go to make up whatever size you are.

On the clothes getting bigger thing - the other day I tried on in a charity shop a vintage eighties dress in a size 14 (which I was myself, in the eighties). It was a bit tight. So did I just stay the same size all this time and just think I'd got smaller as dress sizes went up?

ImeldaM · 03/06/2011 12:53

You are slim, I am 5ft 6, size 14 & curvy (about 10 & half stone), used to be (when younger) size 12, 9stone & skinny. At the time I thought I was medium, but looking back, was quite skinny. We have a model on our school run, very skinny and think most people would prefer to be slim, than model-like.

As others have said, if untoned is the issue then exercise but you are definately slim enough, IMO.

worraliberty · 03/06/2011 12:56

Can you be size 12 and skinny? I always think of skinny as being size 8 or less. Though there are obviously some curvy size 8's depending on height and frame.

Quenelle · 03/06/2011 12:57

Definitely slim. I'm the same height as you and won't be seeing size 10 again.

worraliberty · 03/06/2011 12:57

Oh no scrub that. I've just thought, someone 6ft for example and a size 12 would be skinny.

I think the world is full of short arses like me Blush

mrsravelstein · 03/06/2011 12:59

agree that clothes have got bigger - 15 years ago i would always pick up a size 10, now i'm an 8 or even a 6, and i'm definitely not substantially smaller now than i was then.

going back to the OP, i find that when i look in the mirror i often focus in on the 'bad' bits - so i notice my comparatively chunky thighs, and the no longer tight (after 3dc) tummy. but then when i see a full length pic of myself, i'm always surprised at how thin i look compared to my mental image.
