Not to get why anyone has vertical blinds?

They are ugly things, no? Just been on a walk and noticed how many houses there are with them round here, often in every window. Why would you have them when there are so many nice fabrics around? Or am I missing something?

It's a sliding door.

YouaretooniceNOT · 09/04/2011 23:02

Yep ^ wide, voile panels from Next.

hester · 09/04/2011 23:09

Where I live, you never ever see them in homes (we're a bit more poncy wooden shutters territory) so they do look a bit institutional to me. I think there's definitely a regional variation in their popularity.

I can see that they are useful for French windows/sliding doors. Has anyone tried those sliding Japanese-style fabric panels, that are designed for the same job?

needmyrootsdone · 09/04/2011 23:12

Northern Ireland gets the prize for the most I've ever seen

YouaretooniceNOT · 09/04/2011 23:16

I would love wooden shutters and do intend on having them one day.

Scottish and proud to HATE vertical blinds with a passion!!!
I'm not understanding why people think venetian blinds are a problem on sliding doors-you pull them up!
I don't like vertical ones because to give total privacy they have to be totally closed, not just angled. With venetians, you just tilt the slats upwards.
However, when it comes to new housing estates, I wish I had a company making vertical blinds-they must make a killing

YouaretooniceNOT · 09/04/2011 23:26

shesparkles so you're Scottish?

YouaretooniceNOT · 09/04/2011 23:27

Dh now tells me it is Chewin' The Fat which is what came before Still Game. I can't find it on Youtube though - I will keep hunting. Grin

LisamumtoJake · 09/04/2011 23:54

I have vertical blinds in my lounge, just because i can't afford to change them and DH likes them [hmmm]

I'm scottish also :) I love Still Game, used to like "Chewin the fat" aswell Grin

YouaretooniceNOT · 09/04/2011 23:56

Yeah! Hardly find any Chewin' The Fat on Youtube either - except the sketch where the wife beats her husband. She is wearing a pinny and curlers and a hairnet. She beats the husband for not paiting the wall properly. Pushes him on the floor and outs the stepladders on him. Shouts HELP! out of the window! PMSL!

LisamumtoJake · 09/04/2011 23:58

The DVD's usually go cheap online :) big fan of Jack and Victor, they're like a few old men here i know :)

itssnotfunny · 10/04/2011 10:08

you cant have venetians on a sliding patio door, you would have to open them fully to get out the door.

CheekyLittleSox · 10/04/2011 12:16

Katy1368 · 10/04/2011 18:53

Oh my I thought it was just me that hated vertical blinds, glad i'm not alone!

cinnamonswirls · 10/04/2011 19:10

Hmm if you lived a village were the world goes on holiday and you have curtains - you tend to get people standing openmouthed in front of your windows to see how the poor people in the villlage live and openly calculating the value of your house.

Since I got mine I feel much less like a zoo exhibit plus stopped the odd man down the road saying - I saw you asleep on your sofa today you looked so sweet Blush

If I lived in a house surrounded by gardens and hedges I'd have curtains - but never thought I'd defend the windows of my house against ladies in judgey pants (mostly am trying to defend the state of the inside)

shesparkles · 10/04/2011 19:15
