Not to get why anyone has vertical blinds?

They are ugly things, no? Just been on a walk and noticed how many houses there are with them round here, often in every window. Why would you have them when there are so many nice fabrics around? Or am I missing something?

Popular in Scotland? Eh?

Carrotsandcelery · 08/04/2011 20:59

Yeah, I wondered about that one too Megatron.

surelynotnormal · 08/04/2011 21:06

We moved into this house in January and have horizontal blinds - are those venetian?

And you say I should dust them? How often please????

SilverScarf · 08/04/2011 21:08

You're in trouble if you have a brown leather setee too Grin

SilverScarf · 08/04/2011 21:09

t

fluffles · 08/04/2011 21:10

i don't have them, but as i wandered past the new half million pound townhouses on the canal with the floor to ceiling windows i did wonder what the hell you do if you buy one and don't want everybody staring in at you... and vertical blinds were the only thing i could think would work for a modern canal-side townhouse with floor to ceiling windows...

and yes, i am in scotland.. Hmm

BarefootShirl · 08/04/2011 21:16

We had them downstairs in our old house as it was close to the road and gave some privacy when I'm walking around au naturel - I wasn't too worried about people seeing in but didn't want them to feel sick on the way to work Grin. Our current house is set back a bit from the road so we haven't got anything - I agree that the blinds were naff (but functional) & I hate nets.

Buda · 08/04/2011 21:21

I hate them too. My parents have them on the patio doors in the kitchen but they are only used at a certain time of day when the sun shines right in. MIL has them too.

And thinking about it I have just realised we have them here too! I will post a pic tomorrow. Am in bed and they are downstairs. The ones here are dark cane. Hard to describe. They look ok.

Heifer · 08/04/2011 21:59

I agree, fugly as fugly can be.. And I have them..

Unfortunately don't have the spare cash to change them at the moment, but they are pretty near the top of our list of things to go in the bin asap.

In the past (previous house) I have spent a fortune on some "special" voiles, where we can see out but people can't see in.. Worth every penny at the time..

For now, it's naff central here,.. (and we have a brown leather sofa)

YouaretooniceNOT · 08/04/2011 22:05

YABU I love mine - on the patio doors! But my cat plays with them and they need washing again and are covered in black fluff! Sad

YouaretooniceNOT · 08/04/2011 22:06

My sofa is Mocha italian leather too! So what?

tallulahxhunny · 08/04/2011 22:07

i hate mine, i want roller blinds but... :(

ToughShit · 08/04/2011 22:10

where are all of these offices with vertical blinds of which you all speak?

Don't recall seeing an office with them...perhaps I'm just not that observant...or maybe I just don't give a shit

redandyellowandpinkandgreen · 08/04/2011 22:11

They just remind me of offices. We were given some secondhand to use but I refused to put them up and still have a bare window until we can afford something else!

lostlady · 08/04/2011 22:14

YANBU, they are horrible. And am in Scotland :-D

BTSynergy · 08/04/2011 22:20

I had them from the mid-nineties for five years in my kitchen and DH (not DH then) had them in his lounge. They let the light in and are fairly cheap. I moved into DH's house and we replaced them in the lounge when we could afford shutters. I have since gone shutter mad...

FurCoatNoNickname · 08/04/2011 22:34

Bleeeuurghh. We rented a house 6 years ago that had pale green/peach 90's decor in the living room, complete with peach full-length vertical blinds on the patio doors. Our dog got tangled up in them on a daily basis even when they were drawn back. They are revolting, unimaginative, ugly things that belong in a debt-collection office in Slough.

HighHeelMomma · 08/04/2011 22:36

I have never understood why people have them, IMO they are for offices and doctor surgeries..... My theory is that most people that have them haven't got much idea about interior design and they are an easy option to keep out nosy folk. Come on everyone, think about some more creative and stylish ideas for windows!

smartyparts · 08/04/2011 23:09

Hideousities

As are net curtains

LDNmummy · 08/04/2011 23:15

I would have them in the kitchen or bathroom but only really nice ones and nowhere else in the house.

thefurryone · 08/04/2011 23:19

YANBU they are hideous loads of people in my street have them.

I have voiles in my bedroom I worry that some people with think they are net curtains, but still better that than vertical blinds.

ilovemyhens · 08/04/2011 23:25

A lot of our neighbours have them. They're foul and remind me of offices Sad

Only totally unimaginative, bland, boring types have them.

goodbyemrschips · 09/04/2011 07:06

So what is the alternative?

nets horrible

violes just like nets

verticals or venetian?

Or a plain bare window.

iscream · 09/04/2011 07:30

My mother has them in all windows because she says curtain hold too much dust, and she does have a pretty bad dust allergy.

ilovemyhens · 09/04/2011 07:37

We have horizontal wooden blinds that look okay. You just dust them down to clean them.

I can't stand nets or voiles.
