Not to get why anyone has vertical blinds?

They are ugly things, no? Just been on a walk and noticed how many houses there are with them round here, often in every window. Why would you have them when there are so many nice fabrics around? Or am I missing something?

I have these on my patio doors
www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60083318

and suede effect roller blinds all through the rest of the apartment. Sadly I am v v v v close (yes that close!) to the pavement, and I keep the blinds down otherwise things get thrown at the windows etc

timeforachangearooney · 09/04/2011 15:01

feck me - i've read it all on mumsnet!!

OliPolly · 09/04/2011 15:13

I have them and they are lovely! and no, they are not the cheap office ones either. Smile

much better than net curtains - vile vile vile

loopylou6 · 09/04/2011 15:45

I have them, I love them, I also have chocolate brown leather couches and laminate floor, oh yes and I have twiggy things.Confused What's the problem?

OliPolly · 09/04/2011 15:54

oh and I have lovely comfy brown leather sofas!

emmymoomoo · 09/04/2011 16:48

I have them YABU. I'm not bland or boring, mine aren't beige or office looking.

I hate nets or voiles, they just look manky IMVHO. Plus the front rooms on our house, even in the winter get very, very hot with the sun coming in as we have huge windows. So vertical were the only answer really without resorting to nets.

Slats don't tend to go that big, so we can shut them, still have light coming in, but keep the glaring sun out. We are on a road too, I don't want people nosing.

Nancy66 · 09/04/2011 17:23

I hate curtains more

DarciesmumandTTC2 · 09/04/2011 17:26

We have them, and TBH I love them so much better than net curtains and more tidier. Didn't associate them with work tho (work in for a doctors practice)

UndiscoveredApprentice · 09/04/2011 17:35

Okay, I live in Scotland and have them on every window, through choice. Never realised that I was breaking a fashion rule. I think the curtains block out too much light, but sometimes you want privacy. Mine are very nice and not at all officey.

clam · 09/04/2011 17:37

It's not an "either/or" with nets vs verticals. They're both vile in my opinion. Would rather risk people looking in than have either.
And how many of you exhibitionists people swan around in the nude all the time?

mrsoliverramsay · 09/04/2011 18:09

I don't have them but I like them. It's nets I can't stand. When I moved down south they were everywhere. They make even the nicest house look manky.

doley · 09/04/2011 18:09

They are all over this small town( in Midwest USA) ~took mine down ,don't like them with my shabby chic home Grin

NacMacFeegle · 09/04/2011 18:43

I have red ones, landlord's choice, hate the things.

BubbleBobble · 09/04/2011 20:55

Thank you Mumsnet, for teaching me good taste. I shall burn my blinds immediately.

ShinyMoonInAPurpleSky · 09/04/2011 22:02

There were some in the living room and front bedroom when we moved into this house, we took them down because they're vile, remind me of sitting in a solicitors office when I was 8 while my mum got a divorce, and they're dangerous to my 8 month old baby.

The neighbours across the street have a great big sodding burglar light thing that goes on every time an ant crawls in front of it and when said neighbours saw we had taken the blinds down they came over and asked us why. We told them we didn't want them and they said "But what about the light" (probably thinking we were going to make a fuss over it - guilty conscience there perhaps?) and we just said "What about it? We have curtains."

It was like they're on a mission to convert the whole street to nasty vertical blindness!!!

SlightlyJaded · 09/04/2011 22:07

To all the defenders of the vertical blind.

Yes, but.

What do vertical blinds do that horizontal slatted blinds don't?

Or wooden shutters.

There are no excuses.

Mishy1234 · 09/04/2011 22:09

I know what you mean. They remind me of the dentist.

I think they are cheaper than the horizontal kind though. We definitely need to get some blinds. Our living room is at the front of the house and I'd like a bit more privacy in the early evening. We have roman blinds atm which are fine, but you can only have them up or down IYSWIM.

CointreauVersial · 09/04/2011 22:14

OK, all you vertical blind-haters - find me an alternative.

We have a double patio door in our playroom where the double-glazing unit has failed, so the glass has permanent cloudy patches on it and is really unsightly. Replacing the glass unit is pricy given the size of the door.

The DCs often want to cut out the light to watch TV/play Wii etc.

I loathe nets/voiles.

So I need something that obscures the view of the window, but lets light in, but can easily be adjusted to block the light, that is suitable for a patio door, that is not made of net.....vertical blinds, surely??

ShinyMoonInAPurpleSky · 09/04/2011 22:16

What about venetion ones? They don't look half as bad imo (but then I'm hardly Hyacinth Bucket so who am I to judge Grin)

needmyrootsdone · 09/04/2011 22:38

v popular on council estates - just an observation!! Grin

YouaretooniceNOT · 09/04/2011 22:54

i have never lived on a council estate in my entire! i have vertical blinds on my dining room patio doors!

CointreauVersial · 09/04/2011 22:57

Venetian ones on a double patio door would look ridiculous. You'd have to open them fully to get out of the door, too.

upyourdiva · 09/04/2011 22:57

YABU.

FFS, now I am bland, boring, clueless, council estate, Scottish scruff because of the material I put on my windows...

I'm happy taht is all you have to worry about but unfortunately most normal folk have better thhings to do than moan about what someone has on their windows...Get a life! Hmm

YouaretooniceNOT · 09/04/2011 23:00

CointreauVersial don't be rediculous

ShinyMoonInAPurpleSky · 09/04/2011 23:01

You can get venetion blinds that attach to the top and bottom of the window so they would open with the door iyswim? That wouldn't look as ridiculous as having them loose.
