Benefit Bashing

Kendodd · 18/02/2011 16:40

A mum I know and her DP with two children live in a two bed (nice) HA house. Neither of them work and have not worked for as long as I've known them (two years) I don't know about before then. She has told me they are trying for another baby, not to get a bigger house or anything, just because they want four children eventally. I would love four children but can't have that many because for one we just can't afford four.

AIBU to feel a bit pissed off that they can have more children and I can't or am I just a jealous benefit basher.

ps They are both nice and don't have a flatscreen TV.

I just hope that over time, the general consensus will be that of common sense. Don't expect a stranger to pay for something you can't afford. This doesn't include people that have fallen on hard times-that is what the welfare state is for. Although many people seem to have conveniently forgotten this.

anythingwithagiraffeonit · 19/02/2011 14:57

NoSuchThingAsSociety - there is absolutely no point in talking to them.

As you can see, the responses they give are far too intelligent to be argued with!

"he was an idiot too"

Hmmmm....

usualsuspect · 19/02/2011 14:57

yep I'm a benefit scrounging lefty ..you got me

Hammy02 · 19/02/2011 14:58

FooffyShmoofer-my comments apply to everyone.

Tortington · 19/02/2011 14:58

'ps They are both nice and don't have a flatscreen TV'

p...m....s....l !

i think its fine as long as they dont have a flatscreen Grin

popcrackle · 19/02/2011 15:03

Giraffe Let's just be clear here. I never made any threats to you. I alerted you to the fact that your posting history revealed too much.

I sent you a private message to warn you of this as this is a public forum. That is not a threat.

Oh and if you call someone stupid that is not name calling, that is just using a description Hmm Hmm Hmm anyway let's just agree not to post to each other anymore shall we?

anythingwithagiraffeonit · 19/02/2011 15:05

And I replied.

Where exactly is all the name calling?

bubbles4 · 19/02/2011 15:05

anythingwithagiraffeonit
well if there,s no point in talking to us,why do you keep coming back

popcrackle · 19/02/2011 15:06

Have a lovely weekend fellow posters. Grin

I can just imagine the gutless OP, who fabricated and started this thread sitting down and watching some brainless TV on her flatscreen TV this weekend to ensure she kills some more brain cells.

Tortington · 19/02/2011 15:06

from what i have read namecalling on both sides withstanding, giraffe has said that she had a problem with people who can work and don't

who would disagree with that?

no one would argue FOR benefit 'scroungers' in any way.

on another note, i have been made redundant and my money is running out, so looked to see what benefits i can claim with dh's wage and being a homeowner

and ....its £5.37 in tax credits.

so i won't bother!

it is at this point that DH turned into a raving loony Tory and started ranting about how i've worked all my life, bloody benefit this and that...he's usually left of centre - just - but it does indeed go to show that your own circumstances do contribute massivley to this debate, therefore when nosuchthingassociety states

'if you're on benefits and take a view that supports their continuance, then you are arguing purely from self-interest and can be ignored.'

i think we are all doing this are we not? we form opinions this way.

bubbles4 · 19/02/2011 15:07

would that be the brainless tv that anythingwithagiraffeonit is responsible for making.

anythingwithagiraffeonit · 19/02/2011 15:10

Bubbles4... That's a good point.

Sometimes it's hard to just walk past a moron without trying in some way to help them.

No one even really seems to be talking about the original point anymore anyway!

I'm off to sainsburys... Have fun!

anythingwithagiraffeonit · 19/02/2011 15:12

Hold on... I'm back!

Bubbles.... You think I make all TV??

Love it.

iamusuallybeingunreasonable · 19/02/2011 15:14

Crikey, that was a long one

Op, yanbu, the welfare state is to help those in dire need, not extend your brood, yes we could all do this, but who would pay their bloody taxes to pay for it?! .... oh yes, that's right, the likes of me, who has to leave her 6 month old baby in nursery full time, through a sense of moral duty and self respect, and who cqnt possibly consider extending my family for at least 4 years as childcare is too expensive and i won't live off benefit handouts, by which point ill be too old to have another or 3rd child... the sense of expectation in thiw country is unreal, were all entitled to an opinion, and thats mine

Tortington · 19/02/2011 15:14

SAINSBURY'S?

ver MC Wink

Tortington · 19/02/2011 15:15

id happily claim benefits if i were entitled to whilst i was down on my luck - for a limited period

bubbles4 · 19/02/2011 15:16

anythingwithagiraffeonit
your posts make me pmsl, when nothing worthwhile to say, resort to insults.

Driftwood999 · 19/02/2011 15:16

OP, YANBU. The benefit system really does need looking at so as to make it fair for all. It should be a safety net for those that find themselves on hard times, not a choice. How demoralizing to be working knowing full well (some) others, that could do the same.

anythingwithagiraffeonit · 19/02/2011 15:17

Sainsburys is walkable - and my baby likes the walk! Lol

Glitterknickaz · 19/02/2011 15:17

nstas & giraffe am I disqualified?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 19/02/2011 15:18

Get a nappy then, bubbles. Giraffe hasn't been insulting on this thread. Hmm

bubbles4 · 19/02/2011 15:19

anythingwithagiraffeonit
I actually agree with you that people on state support shouldnt be trying for another baby, but its not what you say, its the way that you say it and your posts come across as smug and condescending.

iamusuallybeingunreasonable · 19/02/2011 15:20

Ah yes, but genuine down on their luck cases tend to find its not worth their while

bubbles4 · 19/02/2011 15:20

So calling me a moron is not insulting then?

noodle69 · 19/02/2011 15:21

As someone who is in a family who do 70 hours a week on close to the minimum wage I agree it isnt fair that some people work and some people get the same lifestyle without doing anything.

This doesnt mean SN, disabled, special circumstances. I am talking about the ones who wont put their child in nursery, dont see it will make much difference to their income etc. If you dont think people like this exist then you are very mistaken.
