Hello all

This is a thread for people who have decided that life is much better without alcohol!🤩 These threads were started by @Drybird, and they have changed the lives of many people.

Some posters on these threads have been sober for a long time, and some are only just starting. We are a very friendly and inclusive bunch and we are always excited when someone new joins the thread. The only thing we ask is that our posters have given up alcohol completely. Talk of moderation can be triggering for some people, so this thread is not the right place for that (there are other moderation threads🙂).

We are a supportive welcoming bunch. No question is ever to “ silly “ and their is generally someone around if you are struggling

So just come here to chat or vent or check in . Whatever you need as you ride the rollercoaster of an alcohol free life smile

Thank you to @Adm1010 for hosting the last thread 💜

And here’s to the next 40 pages grin

Tomorrow I'm going to get my two year tattoo Grin I'm not actually two years til the weekend but I'll be away. Excited!

Crunchymum · 20/05/2022 20:24

Congratulations on 2 years, that is phenomenal @HangingOver

What are you having tattooed?

Crunchymum · 20/05/2022 20:27

Thanks everyone. You’ll be pleased to know that the thought “ooh! I should celebrate with a glass of wine!” got wrestled to the ground fairly quickly.

Thanks @Crunchymum - it’s a quote from a poem Summer’s Day by Mary Oliver:

“I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?”

What a beautiful and poignant quote. We really do only get this one shot don't we?

Sorry guys, I'm clogging up this thread. Is someone going to do another one? (pretty please)

Nouveaunew · 20/05/2022 22:55

Congratulations @Onewildandpreciouslife A cause for celebration to be … I think you said … 3 years cancer-free & alcohol-free too! That’s pretty impressive! I hope you celebrate in whatever alcohol-free way you enjoy the most: sweet treats or a nice dinner out? Enjoy enjoy 😊

Nouveaunew · 20/05/2022 23:02

It’s lovely to read all of your posts & it is so encouraging to read how we’re all resisting and trying. It’s not easy — even today I had a big ‘ah why not, it’s Friday’ moment but the moment passed. Moments always pass but the satisfaction of building up the AF days really lasts. It’s a great feeling.

Someone wrote upthread A litre of spirits can stop the heart so your husband is either a full blown alcoholic or bloody lucky IMO (sorry i am on my phone so can’t go back to previous page without deleting this so don’t know who) and I took pause … I used to regularly drink half a litre of vodka before going out with my friends for the night & drinking more after that. Granted this was in my 20s but still - I don’t think I realised at the time that not everyone else was drinking as heavily! 😶I love the thoughts of the liver Just getting a break. Mine has been working hard … as I’m sure you all can relate. 😘

Wow - these words are very meaningful, thanks

Checking in 🙌

Nearly the end of a night shift on the ward, just doing one more tonight then it's back to days.

Tell you one thing, night shifts have not made me feel at all tempted to drink alcohol.

Morning. Well done on your last Night Shift @ChampooPapi. I hope you are able to have a well earned sleep now.
I've got a big work project to finish this weekend and so glad I'm not hungover trying to tackle it.

Enjoy your Saturdays all

Kindtomyself · 21/05/2022 07:29

@JesusSufferingFuck22 this really resonated with me My god all these years of feeling like shit, mentally and physically because of drinking is just mind boggling.
I feel exactly the same

AlloftheTime · 21/05/2022 08:44

@ChampooPapi enjoy a good sleep and hope you feeling good this weekend. Great to hear from you 👍

It's quite astounding. I mean I KNEW what I was doing to my body was wrong but now it's like my vision has cleared and I can really SEE what's been going on and see my way out of this!

changingforthebetter3 · 22/05/2022 09:01

@HangingOver That's such a great idea! Love it

Amdone123 · 27/05/2022 08:43

@AlloftheTime @Nouveaunew , wow, I love that sentence too. Really resonates with me. They are only moments and they do pass, but af days mounting up and the associated benefits are amazing. Thank you. I'm going to write it down. ❤

Tomlettegregg · 29/05/2022 09:08

Back again.. day 5 and feeling optimistic. Trying to work out my triggers but there are so many I wonder if it's better not to bother. Rereading 'the unexpected joy of being sober' and 'glorious rock bottom' and trying to get DH to do it with me.

JennyAct3 · 29/05/2022 12:57

@Tomlettegregg there is a new thread, if you scroll back about 6 posts there is a link. See you on the new thread!
