New thread for those of us attempting Dry January.

OP posts:
H1Drangea · 25/01/2022 19:32

All well here thanks @Mybestyear
Bit cold , but I’ve an indoor scarf on ( as well as vest top , jumper and big cardi )
Made delicious bread today , so I’ve just polished off 2 slices ( low carb gone out the window tonight )
On sparkling water with lime
We have booked the hotel , Cote for dinner on Saturday night and The Ivy for breakfast Sunday
There will be a glass of wine with dinner , my plan for February ( which starts on 29th Jan 👍) is I’m allowing myself a sensible amount of wine if we’re out , but not allowed at home … so DH says he’s booking outings every Friday and Saturday!
That won’t be happening though

H1Drangea · 25/01/2022 19:37

Posted too soon , hope you’re starting to feel better @Mybestyear

Photo of bread I made this afternoon , a 4 strand lovers knot
Apparently the way it’s woven is where the phrase “a leg over “ comes from as a leg goes over and an arm goes under as the weave / braid of bread progresses
Useless know it all fact of the day ✅

Evening all, things still going well over here too. I survived my first social meal out last night, everyone had beers with their curry and I stuck to being AF.

I am so happy to be at day 25. My sleep is the thing I'm loving the most and waking up still feeling relieved I did not drink.

Bread is looking good @H1Drangea !! Yum!

CrumpetswithMarmite · 25/01/2022 22:09

Also... For anyone thinking of a longer challenge / goal, there is also an initiative called sober spring that runs March 20 for 3 months.

alcoholchange.org.uk/get-involved/campaigns/sober-spring

I'm thinking of allowing myself to try some drinks in feb/March in moderation but then do this. Deciding...

I had never heard of it until this eve so thought I'd share!

Wow @H1Drangea I don’t think I’d have resisted either!! I generally do low carb when I’m trying to shift the pounds but home made bread is just so yummy 😋
NorthernChinchilla · 26/01/2022 07:12

Very impressed with the bread! I make my own dough, but only for pizzas... must try the real deal. @H1Drangea would you mind posting the recipe and method?

And well done re the curry Crumpets good for you on staying AF. Got a lunch out tomorrow, but given it's a daytime thing and a work leaving do, it'll be soft drinks all round anyway....

Can't believe January has flown by- I remember seeing the month streeeeeeetch out when we all started, and now it's nearly done!

Great, I'm up for this for sure.

Thank you, that's brilliant Smile

CrumpetswithMarmite · 26/01/2022 18:21

Thank you for sharing @H1Drangea !

I thought the worst of my cravings were over but had a massive one today. There is such a strong link to stress. Anyway, managed to curb it with dark chocolate and a glass of oat milk.

Feeling quite tired today. Maybe it is generally january gloom bringing me down..! I have been feeling a lot better but actually a reflection today is I'm surprised I don't feel more amazing after 3 weeks of being AF. But I'm wondering if it is the shorter days / cold weather at play too.

Equally, I know I feel a whole lot better than I did.

guineapigs · 26/01/2022 20:36

I am doing fine but there hasn't been any social life so no need to drink.

Next Monday is last day of January. I will continue not to drink during the week and if I have cravings I will have AF. I think Dh wants to have wine and beer during weekends so I probably will have some too.

Ijustneedtosleep21 · 26/01/2022 20:57

Proud of myself after drinking on Saturday I haven't felt like anything or wanted another since. I've had a stressful couple of days too!

NorthernChinchilla · 26/01/2022 22:14

Ditto on the stressful day! Found out that a decision by another body could literally lead to a significant part of the major public sector organisation I work for grinding to a halt... stuck to the Becks Blue and making sure I got my steps in. Others involved I know were very much having a drink tonight!

Need to get an early one as I've got that to deal with, on top of a lengthy grievance meeting and a leaving do tomorrow- give me strength...

Planning on the same guinea, remain AF during the week, and reduce current drinking to Saturday only and 'events', but given my main hobby is garden centres there won't be many of those Grin Like to think if I've adjusted fine to the new normal of DJ, I can make that shift to moderate drinking and that being the new normal.

Dulsesunset · 26/01/2022 22:23

Failed today following stressful day at work... need to have alternative ways to handle life stress... overall this dry Jan month has gone really well so I want to focus on positives but clearly there is still work to do dealing with stress/triggers

H1Drangea · 27/01/2022 07:53

@NorthernChinchilla I like a garden centre too , we have lots of pots on the front patio and DH walks past them not looking at the empty pots not caring that they look awful , so I’m gradually filling them up
Bought some of the little pots of daffs in Tesco ( they were reduced to 50p ) filled a couple of pots with them , he didn’t even notice ! But it made me feel better

@Dulsesunset focus on the positives , it was one blip , climb back on the wagon

Need to do some serious cleaning today , we do BnB and have a holiday cottage , and have been closed December and January , but the bookings are coming in now for February ( luckily , as the bank balance is a little low ! ) and I need to get organised

Has anyone else tried playing Wordle ? It’s a good mind bender and quite a challenge ( to me anyway )

Hope everyone has a good day

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 27/01/2022 08:37

Morning ladies. Sorry I've been quiet, my DH has got a bit of a bee in his bonnet about me being on MN and while he's sick it's just easier not to antagonise him.

Still 'Rona free and AF. Not even vaguely tempted at the moment and actually dreading DH starting again as that's when the real test will be.

Either day 26/27 or Day 5 here after a planned drink on Saturday night. Very restrained, not obviously intoxicated, but despite water before bed I felt pretty dire on Sunday morning and no desire to repeat the experiment.

Sleep coming together nicely now and I am much more productive on days when I have slept well.

pointythings · 27/01/2022 08:57

I've started doing Wordle - really good puzzles for a bite sized brain workout.

I have very little patience with people who have bees in their bonnets about what social media interactions I have - as long as it isn't affecting the relationship, it's none of their business. My late husband was also not keen on MN, mainly because it was giving me ideas about how our marriage wasn't all that and I didn't have to stay in it.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 27/01/2022 09:31

@pointythings oh I feel the same way believe me but it just is not worth the ensuing arguments right now. Unfortunately he believes the rhetoric that we're all man hating feminists on here and if we argue about anything he comes out with "you've been on Mumsnet again"

It's far from ideal but right now it's not the bill I want to die on.

MyGhastIsFlabbered it's not easy, is it? If only life were so simple as just LTB - it took me almost 7 years to leave mine. I hope that Dry January is bringing you some insight and clarity into what you want for your future. My first dry month (a June, not a January) certainly did that for me. Flowers

NorthernChinchilla · 27/01/2022 19:07

I was going to say the same pointy and ghast, except my experience was with my BiL, who said the same and is a vile individual. Big red flag. Destroyed his family.

Daisy829 · 27/01/2022 19:14

Still dry here and enjoying it. I do have social events next Fri & the Fri after that I will drink at. Usually I would drink just when at home with DH but my plan moving forward is to only drink when I’m out/seeing friends/social events rather than at home 3 nights a week. I must admit I’m a bit nervous about how I’m going to feel after alcohol.
