New thread for those of us attempting Dry January.

Oooh snap pointy I'm off to scrub the bathroom too, though probably more of a cat's lick than a deep clean Grin Going to do the last bit of touching up of the paintwork tomorrow, and the bed and loveseat are in the bag (allows self a little squeeee)

NorthernChinchilla · 23/01/2022 16:38

And glad you're feeling a bit brighter @Ijustneedtosleep21, and hope the headache is gone!
Without being too overly naff, it is a journey and it is about learning what the boundaries are for ourselves, which will all be different.

H1Drangea · 23/01/2022 19:40

@NorthernChinchilla she’s fine , just a 25 years old , sharing a flat with an old school mate and a girl from uni , all having suffered horrific loss of confidence due to being stuck with the parents over the last 2 years of Covid . Now busy living their best lives in London , but every now and then things get too much

@Ijustneedtosleep21 as @MyGhastIsFlabbered so eloquently said
22 out of 23 ain’t bad ( 💐Meatloaf 😢)

Feeling a little meh today , I think it’s the weather , been cold and grey and we’ve been busy catching up on lots of little jobs ( eg look for spare key to replace broken key ) when it would have been quicker and easier to just go to Timpsons with the broken key

Would have liked / loved / really wanted a big glass of Sauvi B with dinner , but resisted 😇

Gym booked for tomorrow morning , starting week 4 of C25K , it’s certainly easier this time ( without the apres wine fatigue )
23 down , 8 to go … nearly the first month done

hellokitty9 · 23/01/2022 20:22

Hi all, well done on getting through a 4th!!! weekend in January! 👏👏
Made a roast today and would've loved a large glass of wine to go with it but we had Lidl shloer and it was pretty nice! I am definitely noticing some weight loss around my middle now which is making me very happy and making me wonder if I can get the summer bod I've always wanted if I carry on and do Feb as well although I'm not sure as I really am looking forward to that first drink..
I guess there are 2 ways at looking at dry jan, the first is just powering through 31 days until you can drink again, the second is an investment into staying alcohol free longer.. I'm unsure which I am but sadly think I might fall into the first category ☹️

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 23/01/2022 20:48

I'm knackered, went for a run this afternoon and managed another 5k. I'm still feeling great - can really feel the benefits this year (even if I did put on a pound this week Angry)

I really, really do not want to drink in February but I know it's going to be so much harder when DH is...luckily he likes red wine and I like white but we're helping each other through at the moment and I don't know how easy it will be without his support. I know he'll support me in his own way, but I do worry he's going to want a drinking buddy. I was doing really well until mid-February last year and then he bought some Prosecco and that was it. I'm hoping to do better this year.

And for those of you planning on moderating come Feb - hope you'll all continue posting and we can still help each other through this journey - whatever form it takes

Hi, checking in, still dry. Sleeping so well, had a lovely family day today and dc have been delightful. Have started to forget to populate my try dry app and am pretty happy sitting here with a sparkling water, my habit feels less like it has a hold of me in last few days.

H1Drangea · 23/01/2022 21:18

I’m with you (as in I’m a white and DG a red wine drinker ) and would like to be alcohol free / alcohol low in February
I’m thinking not drinking alcohol at home and drinking other than wine if out ( out , out … ahh the good old days )
But … what ? I only like a beer on a hot sandy beach , a GnT on a patio , but it’s February and still cold
It’s easier to stick to sparkling water !

guineapigs · 23/01/2022 21:59

There are couple of happenings in February when I am going to have a drink. My problem was drinking during the week. I think I have managed to crack that by drinking AF beer if I really fancy one. I was lucky that Tesco stocks up AF corona. Thanks for the person in this thread who spotted it!

My sleep is so good now. I used to wake up for a wee every night but now I sleep solid.

NorthernChinchilla · 23/01/2022 22:16

Also shattered, am soooo looking forward to falling into bed, though don't have your good reason Ghast, the running is v impressive!

Had a lovely cuddle with DD before bed, she wrote me a 'I love you' card with lots of hearts, bless her.

I'm really, really hoping that I can keep the moderate drinking... week is fine for me, but hope that DJ has helped flick that switch that I don't need to drink Fri-Sun and it's far better for all concerned if I don't Smile

NorthernChinchilla · 23/01/2022 22:20

The one drink I will definitely have is when we move into the new house (which should be in Feb, fingers crossed). As COVID meant we couldn't have a wake for my Mum, I bought everyone who came to the funeral a bottle of champagne so they could raise a glass in her honour. Have a few bottles left over, and as it's the money from her that's allowing us to move, I will raise a glass on our first night.

I am being good and have some Nosecco ready for exchange which should be imminent!

whoopstheregoesmyshouldet · 23/01/2022 23:31

I have to confess I have "paused" dry January for a work trip. BUT the strangest thing has happened. I had a glass of wine at the airport and though "I don't want any more". Today- lunch out, coke and water, welcome drinks- one wine then stopped.
I'm feeling so positive about being able to really really cut back but will go dry again when home mid week and stay dry until mid feb at least. It's done me the world of good already and I want more of this feeling better

Itsnotover · 24/01/2022 04:48

I'm on day 20. I'm sleeping much better and my skin has improved no end.

Floydthebarber · 24/01/2022 08:37

whoopstheregoesmyshouldet that's how I'm feeling too. Evenings are fine without drinking, so are weekends. I don't miss hangovers! We've had a bottle of wine on our kitchen side since new year and I think perhaps next weekend I will cook a nice meal and we will share it then. I'm not thinking, "I can't wait for this to be over so I can drink alcohol again"!

NorthernChinchilla · 24/01/2022 20:14

I'm keeping up the walking too; it was so easy when I worked in the Office, walking to get everywhere, but now I really need to make the effort.
Still doing fine, though I did give DH a Hmm when he exclaimed "oh thank God we've got tonic!" on Saturday, when worried about his G&T. He did at least have the grace to look embarrassed and apologise...

pointythings · 24/01/2022 21:35

Stressful evening - DD1 needs me to be her guarantor for her rent, but letting agent wants the paperwork by Thursday - and only sent it today. Sigh. I've sorted it, am now going to treat myself to a big fat mug of sleepy tea.

H1Drangea · 25/01/2022 06:54

Another day alcohol free !
Hallo day 25

I’m so glad I decided to try and do this , and finding it all relatively easy ( possibly because we have no social life at the moment ! )

Is anyone else I’m still waking up feeling really thirsty , with a dry mouth ?
I had put that down to wine related dehydration, makes it easier to do the 2 litres of water a day though , when I’m on my second glass by 7 am

I’m meeting a friend and doing a bread making course this afternoon , we’re making St Dwynwens bread ( waves to anyone else in Wales 👋)
Shame I’m low carbing !

Have a good day .everyone

The end of January is in sight and who knows what February will bring
( hopefully it will be Health , Wealth and Happiness )

ChangeMustCome · 25/01/2022 08:43

Morning H1drangea
I'm not waking up with a dry mouth but I do have a morning sluggishness that I have always put down to hangovers but it may just be me. Like you, I've found it quite easy to stop compared with in the past, I think it's partly lack of social life but also just being sick of wine being too present.
Well done on day 25 everyone.

PromisesMeanNothingSue · 25/01/2022 08:44

Interestingly I noticed yesterday that my tinnitus has pretty much disappeared since stopping drinking. I can't see how it's related but I'll take it as a win.

@MyGhastIsFlabbered it is totally related! I discovered this when watching a tv series where the main character does a thing to stop his tinnitus, and I thought ‘ooh - I’ll have to try that and see if it makes a difference to my (frequent, annoying - especially during the night) tinnitus… hang on, I haven’t had it lately; not since… oh since I stopped drinking!’. I looked it up and indeed it is caused or exacerbated by drinking; alcohol increases the blood pressure in the head, which can cause tinnitus. I’ve had it only once, briefly, since I stopped drinking (day 86 for me).

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 25/01/2022 09:58

@PromisesMeanNothingSue that's really interesting. Another reason for me to continue into February then!

Day 25 and I just came back from my weekly Tesco trip to get more Corona Cero.

Daisy829 · 25/01/2022 13:12

That’s really interesting about tinnitus. I suffer with it too and now you’ve mentioned it I’m trying to hear mine and it’s still there but not as loud. Who knew.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 25/01/2022 16:35

Mine is pulsatilla tinnitus - I don't get it all the time but can't remember the last time I had it.

We've been hit by the plague - DH has tested positive for COVID - I've done a lateral flow and it's negative so far. Crossing everything and hoping we don't all get it.

NorthernChinchilla · 25/01/2022 17:18

@MyGhastIsFlabbered my best mate has Menier's, and one of they key elements of that is appalling tinnitus. She finds that sugar is a trigger, so it wouldn't surprise me (given the sugar content of booze!) that there were a connection. Booze itself doesn't help, so it's no fun for her after JD and coke!
Bummer about the COVID, hope your DH is OK?

My sleep seems to have gone random again- dropping off quickly, sleeping deeply (and noisily, as DH is swift to add, the git Grin)... and then waking just after 5! I'd happily take 6.30, dunno what's doing.

Mybestyear · 25/01/2022 18:44

Evening all DJers. I've had a bit of a miserable time with a tooth abscess /extraction then we've all had covid. But at least I was able to be AF without much effort. I started on Boxing Day so I'm at day 30 now yay!!

I've not had any cravings as such I still can't do a day without thinking about alcohol - I was a big binge drinker rather than an every day drinker but I would just like some peace in my mind -the thought of never drinking again still freaks me out!

My sleep has improved again. And I've lost a little weight but on target to get it off for June - trying to do it sensible this time round as I usually crash and burn.

How are folks this evening??
