I need your help to enable me to stop drinking.

I'm drinking every day and far too much. I couldn't get out of bed this morning to take the children to school. Probably a good thing as I would have been over the limit anyway.

I'm sick of feeling crap all the time. Why do I do it? I can't just have one glass. As soon as I start I think sod it and just carry on drinking until I physically can't any more.
I have so many problems in my life but this is one I can control so I'm starting with stopping drinking.
I'm going to use this thread to keep reminding me how much I need to do this. I would love some support and positive stories if anyone wants to join me.
Day 1 starts today! Thank you for reading

Put the wine in the shed!! I’ve been having the odd glass of red AF wine. It is a bit sweeter than usual, but it’s ok!

I noticed this morning that my belly button is round again. It’s been a wide slit for years... my belly has shrunk! I also noticed that people smile at me more... I wonder if that’s because I look more open and cheerful- less haggard looking!

I love noticing the little changes.

Cocoali · 12/01/2020 09:49

How is everyone? Im on day 11 today. Had a lovely AF weekend. Not really thought of alcohol at all. Chilled with a curry and watched a film last night x

lovemyfurrywuff · 12/01/2020 11:04

I'm hitting 8 weeks tomorrow and getting bored of being sober. I managed to resist the temptation of the wine over the weekend though so I'm chuffed with myself. I had been putting money away to treat myself but had a big bill so that's gone. Just feeling a bit meh about it all.

Dotty2019 · 01/02/2020 18:03

Hi everyone
How are you all doing?
Just thought I would update you. So dry January didn't go to plan. I did stop for a while.
But I have gone from drinking every night to just Friday and Saturday.
That is now my intention to completely stop on school nights and then maybe try to just 1 night a week.
Feeling much better and more in control. Good luck to everyone who is still trying x

Was thinking about you all today. I'm drinking again. Manage nine weeks and got bored. So far I've had wine while I'm out and a few Morgan's in the house. So far so good. Not going back to drinking every night. If I do I'll go AF again. Have noticed I feel very down the next day after having had a drink the previous night.

Dotty2019 · 01/02/2020 19:39

Hi lovemyfurrywuff you are doing great! Wow 9 weeks that's amazing.
Yes, I do feel down after drinking. Crazy isn't it? Why I still do it I just don't know. But i feel like I am in more control and I don't want to go back to drinking in the week. If I could just do it when I went out that would be great.

That's what I'm aiming for too. Just when I'm out. Time will tell Smile

So i haven't touched a drop since new years day so feeling good about that. I agree with the boredom though.. def where i struggle... certainly at weekends but its nice to wake up fresh and be able to get out early without worrying ill be over the limit. Def dont miss the hangover. I would love to drink when out but i very rarely go out.. been around 4 years since i was out so its not even something to look forward to once a month say lol.

How is everyone? Did anyone see why the post before me got deleted? Just curious

Mycrazylife85 · 06/02/2020 22:42

I haven't read the whole thread as it's huge but has anyone read 'alcohol lied to me?' It's worth it!

Dotty2019 · 12/02/2020 09:59

Hi @Cocoali
Well done you!
I'm still sticking to just weekends. Managed just on Saturday night last week. Definitely not drinking on school nights so trying to keep it to Friday and Saturday. But once a week would be better.
I actually feel so much better. Love not waking up with a hangover and constantly thinking when I can open the wine!
I feel free.
Why is it that you don't go out? Must admit I don't really like going out. Prefer to stay snuggled up at home in my pjsGrin.
Not sure why the post was deleted??

Hi @Mycrazylife85, no I haven't read that, may give it a try.
How is everyone else doing?

Hi everyone and OP 👋🏻 I've gotten into a habit of wine every night only 1-2 glasses sometimes 2-3 but it's every night after a recent breakup ! I guess it's the lack of company and boredom ! I find after 6/7 I clock this is wine witch comes out ! So can I can how did u cut down in the week what did you do of an evening ?! Thanks xx

lovemyfurrywuff · 16/02/2020 13:33

Hi everyone. Think about you all regularly. I'm drinking again. Only once or twice a week and only half bottle of wine at a time. I don't think about it obsessively like I used to. Also it's never as pleasurable as I think it'll be!

Cab121009 · 16/02/2020 14:34

I am in the same boat right now, missed a few days from work and have been in when i must have stank of drink. Feel like its just spiralling out of control. Can not drink all week then when i do i drink to the extreme then feel terrible for days. Im going to stop be good to have some support along the way and maybe help support others aswell. J

Dotty2019 · 19/02/2020 10:13

Hi
I can really recommend the alcohol experiment. Sorry don't know how to link but it is in the first few pages of this thread.
So nice waking up without a hangover. But I still have those "fuck it" moments and then feel crap the next day.
Keep trying everyone x

hi all, came across this thread this morning as I have been drinking every night for the last 12 months and its become a bit of a habit now which I want to break. I have just started the 30 day alcohol free experiment, as I drank two bottles of wine last night and I'm fed up feeling awful every day. it is so nice to see others are feeling the same and im not alone.

Dotty2019 · 01/03/2020 17:14

Hi @dhugz07
Sorry I don't come back to this thread as often. Well done for making a start!
I found the alcohol experiment a tremendous help. It's so easy to slip into bad habits and like you, I was drinking every day and increasing my wine intake.

I haven't managed to totally stop. But I have cut down considerably and tried to keep my drinking to just Friday and Saturday evenings. This week I haven't drunk at all this weekend so 7 days in a row. I was thinking of trying a month but I just take it day by day now as I deal with it better that way.
I feel SO much better when I haven't had a drink. Sleep better, more productive and my mental health is better too.
Been trying to lose some weight so this is helping keeping me on the straight and narrow.
Let us know how you get on. I found this tread incredibly helpful and don't worry if you fall off the wagon. No judgment here x

I'm back to one or two nights a week. I was out last night and am a tad rough today. In days gone by that wouldn't have stopped me having wine with my tea whereas tonight I couldn't face it. I feel so much better when I don't drink. It was nice having wine with our meal though so I think I've found the right balance. I thought I would have been right back on it but I'm not. Hope the rest of you are still doing well?

Dotty2019 · 02/03/2020 13:23

Hi @lovemyfurrywuff

Good to hear you are ok. I'm feeling like you at the moment. I used to wake up feeling rough but by 6pm I'd forgotten how bad I felt and I was back on the wine!
Not sure if I can completely stop but feeling so much more in control.

I was driving home from my mums on Saturday and normally I would pick up some wine before I got home. I just didn't fancy it and the thought of waking up hangover free on Sunday was much more appealing. Would love to hear from everyone else x
