Moderation! (Or the world’s biggest wine glass!)

Hi all. bigbus Grin after I had been staying with a friend who serves wine 250ml at a time in massive glasses I went to Switzerland and got a tiny measure of wine in a little glass. I sent her a picture of it with a piece of Lego for scale.
longest throw your hat in I say.

MadameForest · 25/05/2019 07:23

Longest I agree with Leaving, go for the job even if you do spend the weekend on your application form. I think the weather is going to be pretty crap so why not?
Leaving in France the standard glass is half that. I'm always shocked when I go to the UK and see the measures of wine in Pubs, 175ml seems to be a small measure there.
Bigbus I think that once you get through more than 2 (small) glasses of wine willpower goes out the window as does moderating. So I prefer to stick to AF in the week.
Frouby I hope your bbq is rained off!
Dion Flowers for stroppy DD and bad influence DP
NC4 I hope DS is OK, what a start to your holiday!
Dinner at friends last night, which typically finished at 1.30am with an hour's drive home, so only one glass of wine as opposed to the usual one bottle Friday night . So although I'm tired at least I'm not hungover. Up early as taking DS to an athletics meeting and then I'm going to run before working the rest of the day.
No bank holiday here Monday, but we make up for it by having one on Thursday, most people don't work Friday.

NC4Now · 25/05/2019 15:12

DS1 has bounced back, thankfully. We’re just having a pool day today. It’s nice having their dad and stepmum here. They are good company.
I’ll catch up later, even though I have no intention of being AF on holiday!

Frouby · 25/05/2019 15:41

Bbq luckily decided against. Though dh is doing my head in. Ds is going to my cousins for a few houra tomorrow afternoon. Dh wants to go out out. I really don't want to go out out.

I don't want to go out out with his work mates. It's about 10 miles away so a fortune in taxis. We will spend a fortune there. I will feel rough on monday and I have too much to do. We went out all night last week. I don't know any of these friends.

Fml. Have compromised and said we will go local for a few beers, or he can go out out and I will drop him off. Still huffing and puffing.

Sigh. He thinks we are still in our 20s. I went out out an awful lot then. And even before we had ds we went out every other weekend as dd used to go to her dads so it's not like we have never gone out.

Hmph.

Anyway, only had 2 gins last night! So woke up fresh as a daisy, been to allotment and planted loads of stuff out, then been and picked dd up from my mums and been to ponies. Going to have a nice bath, get my pjs on and relax, possibly with a gin. Possibly not.

Longest, thank you, lovely. That is very sweet of you. No chance of a heart-to-heart with DP. Last time there was an evident problem, I said I would like to talk to him, and he said he cba as it would spoil his day Sad

What are you doing about your job application?

NC4, Glad DS1 has bounced back. I hope you have a lovely and well deserved holiday.

Completely sodden here. DCs are having a joint b'day party. I have been dreading this moment, and here it is. The tiny house is awash with teenagers. FML a million times over. Gin is the only way through this.

Am in haste, due to said party, but waving to all tryers. xx

NC4Now · 25/05/2019 22:43

Wow Dion a teenage party is very brave. How many do you have there? DS1 had a party last year. It was like a scene from Skins. I won’t be doing that again for a long time.
I’m really cross at DP dismissing your feelings. That was very rude of him.
Frouby I often want to go out out, but I get conflicted as I know I’ll regret it. I think I get bored at home.
Madame your Friday sounds very moderate. You seem to be getting back into your groove a bit.

I’m shattered from lounging all day. Only had one beer today, which I think is moderate on holiday.

longestlurkerever · 25/05/2019 22:47

Thanks guys. I had another read of job description. It's weirdly specific which makes me think it's been written with someone in mind, which jogged my memory that the current post holder may be a temporary one, and this process is just to make it legitimate for him. So I am not going to get invested in it but I did email my old boss who is now the division leader to ask about it.

Am in Dorset. It's beautiful. Was aong way though, and the kids have been highly strung. Dd2 only just settled. Ready for bed myself.

longestlurkerever · 25/05/2019 22:49

Lol NC4, all that lounging does take it out of one!

Eek at teenage parties.

I had a beer at the beach. Don't know if it was the beer or the beach that made me instantly relax. Have also shared a bottle of wine with DH. Must stop now. Have put kettle on.

Rightwayup · 26/05/2019 06:16

Half a bottle last night so feeling fine this morning. Agree 're out measures 175 no and I feel short changed. Walking and a pub lunch today but driving later so that will be just the one

Frouby · 26/05/2019 08:18

dion are you on glue love? The only thing worse than your own teenagers is other peoples teenagers. Hope you survived!

Didn't drink last night. Didn't fancy it. How fucking bizarre 😂😂. Looked at my alcohol app, for the last 7 days I have had 4 35ml gins. 4! Am not getting cocky though, have done this before and ended up back on 4 a night within weeks.

It's raining here. Which we do need for the grass and the allotment but it's a pita on bank holiday weekend. Dcs away to my cousins this afternoon, dh still muttering about going out out.

I am planning on a few hours at the stables without having to rush back or having dcs mithering me if it brightens up a bit. If not I might have a naice bath, get pjs on and watch last few episodes of LOD. Grin

Also need to nip to M and S at some point. Its 2 dine in weekend, which is a fucker as you get wine but will stash wine in cupboard not fridge as no one wants warm wine and by the time it's cold the moment has usually passed.

CottonSock · 26/05/2019 08:39

Hi. All quiet here, pretty shitty weather for our bank holiday too. We had a nice day out yesterday. Might go to cinema today and a bit of a rest. Out again tomorrow. I am going to see spice girls! Might need a drink for that.

NC4Now · 26/05/2019 09:04

Longest I reckon go for it on the job too. It shows ambition and even if you don’t get it or it was designed as a formality for the current post holder, it shows you haven’t got too comfortable where you are. In my industry there seems to be an assumption made about working mums attitude to their job that stands against us unless challenged. It’s wrong but it’s how it is.

CottonSocks and Frouby you both seem to be storming it at the moment, same with you Water.

Dion how did it go? Still alive? No arrests?

longestlurkerever · 26/05/2019 09:31

Yeah actually my place isn't too bad on the working mum aspect of things. It's a female dominated place and my bosses have been encouraging me to apply for promotion. It's me that's not so sure that the extra hassle is worth the meagre pay rise. It'd be a move into the senior civil service which comes with quite a lot of crap, and I'd be on revised (meaner) terms and conditions. I do love the work of that particular team though and if the current job holder is leaving after all then there are not that many people who would have the weirdly specific experience, which I do as I used to be in that team, albeit at a lower grade.

Dion I hope you survived!

Frouby that's fantastic work! Enjoy your peaceful day.

Kids' overexcitement has continued overnight. I am hoping they will calm down once we get to the beach.

longestlurkerever · 26/05/2019 20:15

Kids down. Have set myself up a cheeky terrace at the holiday house overlooking the sea. Have wine, natch. First Harry potter film was on the telly so I watched or with the girls. Can't believe it's 20 years since I saw it at the cinema with my uni mates. We all dressed up and I felt part of a proper friendship group for the first time. We are still pals now but a lot of water has passed under that bridge. Feeling wistful.

Dionysa · 26/05/2019 23:21

Oh goodness, Longest. I'd be feeling wistful too. Though Dorset sounds lovely. And jobs... they are so strange. I once got one which was advertised - though I was told at the outset that I would get it anyway, only they had to advertise it just because. Then I had DC and became unemployable. FML.

Absolutely exhausted. Survived the party. Thought all was well until I reached for the gin this evening and found that some bugger has watered it down so much that it's undrinkable. So the Teenagers have presumably had a go at it. They are all denying all knowledge. I am sure Frouby would have a word for this.

Cotton, I am v jealous re Spice Girls!! I saw Girls Aloud some years ago. They were v good.

NC4, I'm so glad to hear DS1 has bounced back.

Waving to all, even if I'm not addressing you personally due to exhaustion!

NC4Now · 27/05/2019 00:58

A condition of my teenage party was that all booze was hidden and out of bounds, along with my rugs, any valuables or flammables. I am not a trusting mother.
Glad you’ve lived to tell the tale Dion though I’d be mighty pissed off about the gin.
I think you work in a similar kind of work to me, so I totally understand DC = unemployable. Shit, innit?
Longest 20 years WTF??? I remember it coming out too.
I’m tipsy off volcano wine tonight. Laughs were had, and a BBQ. Not sure what the plan is tomorrow but I reckon we’re all having a lie in. I’m going to sleep like a person who’s spent all day in the sun. Bliss....

Bigbus · 27/05/2019 06:07

I hope everyone is enjoying their holidays. I was also feeling nostalgic yesterday - after dropping some friends at the airport I drive back through the area a grew up in - past all the pubs I learnt to drink in! I showed DS my old house and primary school. It felt strange.

I haven’t been AF since Thursday but also haven’t been especially soggy. I think I am thinking more about how much I drink and haven’t been drunk or hungover all weekend which is nice.

Bank holiday here and we’re having some friends over for BBQ if it doesn’t rain but they have a small baby and so it won’t be a boozy affair.

Happy Monday everyone.

MadameForest · 27/05/2019 08:19

No holidays here but a nice weekend except for getting stung by a bee which was hiding in a compost bag, no rain. Last week was 3 days AF and probably 2,5 bottles of wine in total so not a disaster. This week might be more difficult as there is a Bank holiday on Thursday, so of course no work Friday (this is France).
Dion glad you survived the party even if your gin didn't.
Bigbus it sounds like you are drinking mindfully and therefore less than before, well done!
Longest Dorset is lovely, my grandparents lived there and I have very fond memories of visiting them in the beautiful countryside and the coast at Durdle Door.
NC4 sounds like you are having a lovely holiday

longestlurkerever · 27/05/2019 08:39

Managed to stop at 1/2 bottle despite DH being in holiday mode and lobbying for opening another. Minor win.

Ugh but couldn't sleep anyway for visions of my lovely country covered in Farage's leering face. Not even feeling any sense of schadenfreude over the Tories, though I am trying. Meanwhile there's a shower of wankerbastards jostling to be PM and fuck all I can do about it. May have to emigrate.

MadameForest · 27/05/2019 08:52

Longest don't emigrate to France the National Front won here. However it was only by a very small margin so although they were boasting about a great victory, in fact it wasn't.
President Macron's party was only 1,5% behind which is nothing considering how unpopular he has been recently.
I do have immense sympathy on the Farage front. And regarding the next PM of the UK. None of the candidates inspire confidence.

longestlurkerever · 27/05/2019 09:01

Ugh. When I was studying Nazi Germany at school it felt really hard to get your head round how a whole country could get behind the far right. And now it's happening again right across Europe and beyond. Makes me very tearful, tbh. My poor girls, growing up in this world. Am trying to take a longer term view. It's always darkest before the dawn.

Bigbus · 27/05/2019 09:17

I take heart in the fact that my DCs (12, 10 and 7) are growing up in a diverse and inclusive, tolerant community where any hint of racism is considered completely unacceptable. DD1s school gives out rainbow badges encouraging acceptance of sexuality, gender, race, nationality etc. This generation give me hope.

rupertpenryswife · 27/05/2019 09:26

Morning everyone. I have been on this thread previously and have been lurking for a while.
I really need to rejoin please, my relationship with alcohol is dreadful.
I have no off button, I tell myself I will just have 2 glasses but, only stop once I have drunk the whole bottle.

I can't keep going like this and you guys were so helpful before.
Will check in later I am off to see a cat hotel!!!

However I do have a bottle of rose chilling which I hope to ignore.

CottonSock · 27/05/2019 09:34

Hi all. Dry last night but it was a struggle. So have been productive this morning making picnic etc. Yesterday we went to Ikea. It would have been more horrific with a hangover I'm sure.

My grandparents lived in Dorset too. Burton Bradstock. I need to visit sw England more. Tend to stick to Wales.

Quite depressing about election results. I really have no idea what will happen next. Tories seem to have gone splat. I guess the brits are generally still behind brexit (just not anyone I know - except parents, that's a thing we don't discuss). Hard to accept for me. I thought opinions had swung.
