I am sitting down with a glass too after classy tea in front of the telly with DC. I had never seen pointless either but feeling strangely proud of dcousin. Years of nerdery finally pays off, to the tune of four grand.

Enjoy your drinks with school mums. I am currently being outvoted re dd1's class camping trip and it's turning into a two night extravaganza! Eek!

Sailing got postponed till tomorrow due to fog and high winds so we did arcades and dodgems instead.

Frouby · 30/05/2019 11:24

Morning all

In the interests of testing out whether it was the wine or the cake that made me feel crap yesterday I drank the other half of the bottle.

It was the cake that made me feel sick and bloated, the wine that made me tired. Based in my very not scientific experiment.

I need something else to binge watch if anyone has any tips. I loved Luther, Line of Duty and I like Shetland and Vera. And they are the only 4 series I have watched in probably the last 10 years! Have Sky, Netflix and Amazon Prime to go at. I orefer stuff set in the UK, love a good crime series but Luther is about as scary as I can go 😂😂😂. Any suggestions anyone?

Just had a call from health team for DS. He's on the 91st centile for his weight so they want to support him to lose some weight, would I like to book in with them to get some tips on diet and exercise.

I declined politely, said he walks 8k steps a day just to and from school, rides 2 or 3 times a week, swims once a week, has just taken up kayaking and will be doing that a minimum of once a week for 2 hours and helps tend a huge allotment so we are good for exercise.

So she asked about food. Said I cook from scratch most nights, he doesn't eat much veg but has lots of fruit. We have lean protein and wholemeal bread and cereal and the only thing he occasionally has fried is air fryer chips. She asked how many sweet treats he gets, said maybe one a day after lunch. Said he shouldn't have that so suggested she take that up with school as he has school dinners with a pudding, and tends to have fruit or yoghurt at home.

She then said he shouldn't have the yoghurt. Said it was too sugary. Pointed out it contains calcium which is vital for growing kids, and maybe school should drop the actual pudding first.

She then said he would be weighed in 6 months and 12 months, so I told her I didn't consent to it. He will probably weigh more then if he keeps the kayaking up. He's a proper little powerhouse. There isn't hardly any fat on him, you can see his ribs and his spine, he's got a proper chest and long, lean limbs so am not going to start dieting a 5 year old and he literally couldn't do anymore exercise.

She then said we should come along for a family healthy walk thing, around the local park. And it would 'do all the family good to get some fresh air and exercise'. Said if she wanted to spend a day with us she was more than welcome, but she will need decent trainers for the 3k dog walk, suitable footware for the 2 hours at stables, wellies for the allotment and something comfortable for kayaking, plus a towel and rock shoes.

Have no doubt she was trying to do her job but if she actually listened to what I was saying she could have saved us both 20 minutes. And she has never even seen ds so was in no way able to comment on his physical appearance. Sigh.

Had this with dd in year 6. They wrote and said she was marginally overweight, would we consider this, that and the other. She was riding 2 ponies 4 times a week at the time and had thighs of steel. Not a skerrit of fat on her, was in age 10-11 uniform cinched in or ladies size 4 if we could find it anywhere. She's a size 6-8 now. And also pretty fit. Wish I was as slim as my kids Grin.

It’s ridiculous Frouby. I had that with DS2 too. Well the letter, not the phone call. I mentioned it to the GP next time we were in, and she took one look at him and told me not to worry. As she correctly pointed out, he was nearly 10lb at birth. You’d expect a big lad at 5 too.

I’m having an airport pint. Had a woman with a buggy kicking off to check in staff that we get to go first on the invisible disabilities scheme, when she has a toddler who is hungry. So that made me feel shit. Then at security the nice Tui lady sent us to the short queue with the wheelchair people, but the Spanish security lady got really uppity and started shouting at me in Spanish and shouting at us to go back to the other scanner (right behind pram lady). DS2 was getting upset because of the mixed instructions and being shouted at.
So pint time before the gates open.
Breathe.....

Oh and Frouby, have you watched Happy Valley? It’s very good. Has Sarah Lancaster in it, set in Hebden Bridge. I think we have similar taste in books and telly, so give that a whirl.
Also The Bay which was on ITV recently was very good, set in Morecambe Bay.
Good, northern grit.

Frouby · 30/05/2019 16:35

Not seen Happy Valley, but noticed it when it came out and thought I might like it so might give that a whirl.

Be glad when the kids back next week, am all confused with my routine and everything. And my bloody veneer came off my tooth again last night so been back to dentist this morning then back tomorrow to have it refitted.

I look like an escapee from Cell Block H today. Fml.

I don't watch that much telly but love the Wire, Game of Thrones, Fleabag.

Went on our pirate ship adventure. Was fun! Kids are done in now though and being whiny, which is annoying as it's paella night at the beach cafe which we are all supposed to be going to.

Wankerbastards will upset us that try, but we will still be dry. Or dryer at a push. It's a good job we are not in a rush.

NC4 have a good trip home. You sound so happy, I'm so pleased you managed to have a holiday.
Frouby I loved LOD, I haven't watched a lot of series, but Unforgotten was really good.
Dion I hope you had a good day with the school mums
Bank holiday here today, weather not great. Long run with friends but not much else to report. Not dry last night, won't be tonight (although as I'm driving it won't be too wet) or for the rest of the weekend, but hopefully back on track Monday.
Frouby my kids both went through stages of being slightly bigger. My son, who is very sporty, was a little chubby this time last year, but in the last few months he has shot up and lost all his puppy fat. That's what happens with children, they go through growth spurts.

MadameForest · 30/05/2019 18:00

Great photos Longest it looks windy but fun!

CottonSock · 30/05/2019 19:37

Frouby. Try Babylon..loved it and nice strong female lead.

longestlurkerever · 30/05/2019 19:43

Ugh, beach was absolutely beautiful this evening but dd2 has not stopped shrieking and dd1 seems incapable of not winding her up. Had to come home. Nerves shot to ribbons.

Sorry about the tooth Frouby. Haha at inviting health visitor to join your day.

Frouby · 30/05/2019 19:59

longest pirate ship looks fab!

NC safe journey home and glad you had a nice time.

Am going to screenshot this page to save all the recommended telly, am rubbish at remembering and will watch one, then forget the rest.

Health team woman was very patronising, and I decided that most of our local team is rubbish when they told me I should only breastfeed ds until he was 6 months old because this poster here behind my head says it.

What it actually stated was 'breastfeed only until 6 months (ie no solids). HV read it as 'breastfeed only until 6 months (then presumably stop bfing and offer steak and chips instead).

That about summed up the level of bfing across the board for our healthcare team.

Not been dry. 2 gins. Ok with that though it's not as good as the last couple of weeks, but it's half term, all bets are off and I have stayed off the dreaded lager.

We are having a BBQ on Saturday though which will be a bit of a test I think. Will be boozy as friends are coming. But am going to tell dh to not buy bottled beer (friends will bring their own), try and have a few becks blue then switch to gin.

But will see how I feel Saturday. Weigh in Monday is a big incentive to stay dry.

longestlurkerever · 30/05/2019 20:06

Groan Frouby. To be fair that's one ambiguous poster, but to think a HV gets all her training from a single poster....

Good luck for the barbecue. Really well done on all the moderating. In half term too! Is last proper day of holiday tomorrow. Meeting some uni friends who live near here. Dd2 has a party sat afternoon and I am hosting a sleepover for dd1's friend Sunday night. Inset day Monday and dd2's birthday on Wednesday, for which I need to sort her new room as that's her main present really. Not quite sure how to squeeze this in as working Mon and Tue. And indeed wed but have been invited on a jolly to Kew so going to take dd2 with me for a birthday treat.

screwthepyramids · 30/05/2019 21:41

Hi guys, trying to shift the weight (18st right now!) I know it's due to my alcohol consumption so starting there. Usually I can sink 2 bottles of 13% white wine in a sitting, usually 3/4 days a week. Takes me about 2 hours to drink both bottles so not good really!
AF tonight, not so bad just watched the Chernobyl on now tv with my other half. Tomorrow will be harder as my daughters are at their dad, and we usually drink when they Ate gone Blush

DoctorDread · 31/05/2019 00:35

I've been on a healthkick since yesterday and am slightly disappointed that my sterling efforts have not seen me loses 9 kg overnight!

Hey ho. Two glasses of wine with dinner tonight, nothing yesterday and using my fitness app to monitor everything that goes in my mouth so not too shabby!

CottonSock · 31/05/2019 11:56

Doctor, I havnt lost 9kg overnight either. I give up now

MadameForest · 31/05/2019 12:58

Welcome screwthepyramids. I hope you manage to moderate and lose weight. Alcohol does indeed contribute lots of useless calories. William Porter in Alcohol Explained details these points which are useful to know (I hope it is OK to post Frouby it's a bit long!)

  1. Empty calories
The first and easiest one, alcoholic drinks contain a huge amount of empty calories. A single pint of beer averages out at 182 calories, which you will need to run for 18 minutes to burn off. A Large glass of wine contains 318 calories which you’ll need to run for 32 minutes to burn off. And let’s be honest, who ever stops at just one?
  1. Alcohol as an energy source cannot be stored
Aside from the actual sugar in alcoholic drinks, the alcohol itself is an energy source, but one which humans cannot store as fat. Because your body cannot store it, it has to burn it off. This is one of the reasons we quite often get hot when we are drinking, it is the excess alcohol energy being turned into heat energy. The problem is that because your body already has excess energy from the alcohol which it is struggling to rid itself of, virtually every other calorie you consume from any another source gets stored as fat.
  1. Appetite stimulant
Alcohol is an appetite stimulant, which means it makes you feel hungrier than you actually are. It is also the case that hunger can come from lack of available energy, or lack of nutrients. If your hunger is from lack of nutrients you will usually fancy something healthy and nutrient rich. Because alcohol simulates the hunger from lack of available energy, we crave calorie dense fast food, rather than healthy alternatives.
  1. Dulling of receptors that tell you when you are full
Alcohol is an anaesthetic and a depressant (ie it anesthetises or ‘depresses’ nerve activity). It depresses / anesthetises receptors that tell you when you are full, leaving you more able and likely to overeat.
  1. Vitamin deficiency
Alcohol inhibits absorption of certain key nutrients like vitamin B-9, B vitamin B-12, Thiamin, calcium, iron, zinc, and other fat soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D and E. This leads to an almost constant hunger as the body cries out for the vitamins that it is lacking.
  1. Excess liquid consumption causes low salt
Whatever liquid you drink eventually comes out, and with it comes small amounts of salt. When you drink more liquid, you lose more salt. When you drink a lot in one go you end up with low salt, which causes salt cravings, causing us to reach for the most salt dense food such as cheese, processed meat, crisps / chips, and takeaways.
  1. Fitness erosion
Drinking cause your heart rate to speed up without any associated physical activity. This actually causes our fitness to actively erode (for more details of the mechanics of this see the page on the website dealing with Alcohol and Fitness).
  1. Sleep disruption
Any amount of alcohol, even just one drink, disrupts our normal sleeping pattern meaning we do not get the quality sleep we need. As a consequence we are left feeling tired and lethargic the next day and less inclined, and less able, to exercise. And this is even if we manage to avoid the actual hangover.
Frouby · 31/05/2019 14:26

Madame thanks for posting that, you have mentioned it a few times and I have been meaning to google it. It makes sense to me. If we order take away on a friday which we usually do, I can always eat a lot more than if I haven't had a drink. It also explains why I am fat, when even taking into consideration the calories from alcohol, I usually only have about 1500 which should be enough to lose weight given how active I am.

Won't be dry tonight though. DHs car was broken into overnight and they have taken some of his work tools. Fml. They have also smashed the back window and it's not in stock and won't be until Tuesday. Fml.

Obviously he shouldn't leave tools in the boot but there are too many to bring in the house and they tend to get nicked if he leaves them onsite, even in lock ups.

So we have just spent 2 hours sorting the shed out to keep some stuff in there, then he needs a big bag to keep expensive stuff in that he can carry in at night.

So my lie in was a write off, spent 2 hours reporting it, sorting out glass repair and insurance and generally being stressed.

Then bought and filled a paddling pool for ds just as it went cloudy, cleaned the Guinea pigs and pigeon out, washed all the decking off and went shopping for meat for our bbq tomorrow afternoon. Dh has invited people from 2pm the bloody knobber instead of 4pm so will be busy tomorrow cleaning the house, doing the salads and stuff and everything else.

Got dentist at 4pm to have veneer put back on, then having a big fat gin.

Had nice day at sea life centre with pals. Now attempting to light BBQ on beach and go for evening rubber dinghy sail, though I forgot the pump which DH has had to go back for. DC are playing contentedly on beach. DH a bit off, suspect a crash is coming, but has been a nice holiday really. Have drunk too much but have not gone mad. Will need to try health kick once home.

NC4Now · 31/05/2019 18:18

Supposing you were invited to a wedding evening do and told ‘your presence is present enough’, the couple own a chain of gastropubs so booze is pointless, they’ve made no request for cash or charity donations.... what would you do!??? Answers in the next five minutes please! I’ve done a thoughtful card.

longestlurkerever · 31/05/2019 20:00

I genuinely think you can take nothing. Normally i would take a bottle of champagne. How close a friend? Close enough to do something thoughtful like a photo montage?

Dionysa · 31/05/2019 21:29

Just catching up. 13 hour work day, with a horrible hangover. I thought I hadn't had that much with the school mums, but it was probably more than I thought (home measures). Just as well they are not really big drinkers, though, as I'd have had even more. As it was, I felt I had to say no when they did.

Very cross with myself because I am vaguely thinking a nice gin would be a good idea. Whereas in reality, it's a shit idea.

Welcome, Pyramids. I'm impressed that you can do an AF night if you're used to drinking two bottles.

Thank you, Madame for posting the William Porter info. It has actually reminded me just now why I'm not in fact going to have the gin. There is absolutely sod all to recommend it.

NC4, safe travels. I'm so glad you had your holiday. And Longest, yours sounds fab.

Frouby, I am very placid, but I wouldn't have felt it if I'd had to have that conversation. Angry

Dionysa · 31/05/2019 21:30

PS NC4, too late, but I think the thoughtful card sounds spot on.

MadameForest · 31/05/2019 21:33

I always hated evening do only wedding invitations. Your presence is more than enough so take nothing.

IrisAtwood · 31/05/2019 21:43

@MadameForest, you have just made up my mind for me. I’ve been through a really, really awful few years and currently have another major stressor (several!!).

I have tended to abuse alcohol when really stressed by drinking with the sole aim of getting drunk and taking my painkillers with it. I also drink secretly and am ashamed to say that I have even had a stash in my wardrobe so that my partner doesn’t know that I’m drinking.

I have a responsible job (self employed), am very fit otherwise (in the gym everyday) and am doing great according to my psychiatrist and therapist. Everyday is a struggle though because I’ve lost so much and feel so low despite all my meds.

Reading your post and scared of losing control makes me think that I want to be AF. Just writing that is scary though because I like the feeling and often think why shouldn’t I after everything I’ve been through?

So tomorrow will be day 1 of AF.

IrisAtwood · 31/05/2019 21:45

Not proud that it’s vanity and fear of weight gain that has really given me more motivation though! I tend to be obsessive about my weight and hadn’t really thought about the calories.
