Tryers to be dryers spring into spring, not as much wine, beer or gin. We sow our seeds of hope for a dryer season, but if we drink, it's for a reason.

Thread 5 for Tryers to be Dryers. A thread for those who want support for moderating or reducing alcohol. Whatever you hope to do, whether it's to have more dry days, or be less wet when you do drink, come and join us for support.

Absolutely no judgement here, just friendly support and chat, the odd swear (lots of swears to be honest). All welcome, new and old tryers to dryers.

Afternoon all

Welcome Chocco. I have 2 dcs, and ds is only 5 so yes I drink in charge of young dcs. I rarely get drunk, just tipsy and in a medical emergency I would either call family or a taxi to get us to wherever we needed to be. I hope you find support here, we are a friendly bunch.

Dion I hate people like that, it's like they are inviting you to go into the back of them. Twats. Nothing you can do about it now, just let your insurance deal with it.

Accruing a lovely pile of washing. Sigh. Am borrowing next doors key tomorrow and going to get a few loads done while they are at work. Was hoping that engineer wuld ring with a cancellation slot but not looking likely now I don't think. Fml. But it's very quiet without the washing machine chugging away. Its bloody loud and by rights, ready for replacing but I can't bring myself to spend money on a new one when I know they will repair this one.

Wasnt dry yesterday. Dh was in from work early so he came on the school run with me so I could take the dog, then we called at the pub on the way home. And then carried on drinking when we got home. Not horrendous, 2 halves of lager, 2 cans and a gin over about 5 hours. So wasn't drunk but still too many empty calories.

Probably won't be dry tonight either, I am bloody useless. Fml.

I hope you can sort your thyroid Angaise. Dsis had thyroid cancer hence hers being removed but it hadn't been working properly for years before her diagnosis. She looks much better now, shes put a bit of weight on and has a lot more energy.

Hi Frouby, it’s me who had the crash, not Dion, but thanks yes insurance dealing with it and car is going in for repair tomorrow. I’m impressed with how quickly it’s been dealt with!

Frouby · 04/04/2019 15:53

Sorry canshop, was speed reading and replying while drinking coffee and watching for a delivery and telling the dog I would take her for a walk once the delivery had been.

Twatting thing didn't come while 2.20pm then it was time to go feed the chickens and pick ds up so still need to go back out and its bloody freezing here.

OP posts:
Canshopwillshop · 04/04/2019 16:12

No problem Frouby 😅 It’s a shocking day here - heavy rain and freezing. DDog has been looking at me all expectantly all bloody day but DH promised this morning that he would take her and they’ve only just gone out now. She’d almost given up hope!

Frouby · 04/04/2019 16:26

Have just let mine out for a wee and she has decided its too cold for a walk afterall and got snuggled up.

Shes a whippet so doesn't do cold or rain or wind. Has been known to get to end of road then refuse to walk any further when shes decided it's too cold 😁😁

OP posts:
Canshopwillshop · 04/04/2019 16:34

Oh bless her ❤️

DH was waiting for the rain to die off as promised by the Met Office and literally 10 mins after he left with DDog, the heavens opened and it is absolutely chucking it down! He’s not going to be very happy 😂

LellowYedbetter · 04/04/2019 20:46

Hi guys! Can I join?

I have a couple of threads running in AIBU and have been signposted here.

I binge brink Thursday - Sunday, around 5-7 cans per night. I feel absolutely crap. I’ve put on weight and I look like shit.

I have tried and failed to quit many times and tonight is day 1 of my current attempt. DH keeps trying to encourage me to drink but so far I’m managing to resist. It will feel weird to wake up on a Friday morning with no hangover

NC4Now · 04/04/2019 20:49

I can’t get over how freezing it is. This is my first year in charge of a garden (well, a little back yard of my own) and I’m worried it’s going to ruin my lovely flowers.
DCat keeps going to the front door, deciding against it, going to the back door and being most cross it’s cold and wet there too.

NC4Now · 04/04/2019 20:51

Hi Lellow. Come on in. We’re all works in progress here. Well done on Day 1. Have you got any kind of goal in mind?

Frouby · 04/04/2019 20:53

Mine would be devastated canshop. She was vibrating outside the pub yesterday teatime and it wasn't even that cold, I was sat in a tshirt and hoodie. She's incredibly nesh. We had a gas fire at our old house and we had to put a fire guard up as she would sit that close she would burn 😁😁😁.

Just had chops, chips and peas for dinner. Haven't had that for years, was lovely. Trying to use stuff up out of the freezer. Its jampacked full of all sorts of random shite.

Am working tomorrow and Saturday, then am going to have an hour sorting it out. Dd has all sorts of veggie stuff in there and I keep buying more because am not sure what she has. Next week we might all be eating quorn fillets 😮.

She is currently packing her D of E rucksack ready for her camping exhibition on Saturday. Apparently everyone elses mums are doing it for them and doing the food shop as well. Have told her the whole point is for her to plan and organize everything properly, not me do it all and her turn up and take the glory.

Have been nagging all week for her to sort it out. She still has to call at tescos after school for her food shop. I would do it for her but she is so fussy. If she gets it wrong and is hungry all weekend I will have no sympathy. I was going to take her Wednesday but she was too tired apparently.

And apparently 'everyone' is taking make up 😂😂😂.

I'd be packing gin in a tin personally. Priorities and all that.

I’d like to be teetotal apart from special occasions. I suppose that means I’d like to stop drinking in the house completely.

Frouby · 04/04/2019 21:25

lellow glad you made it over. I love lager too but its sooo easy to drink too many cans too many days, and my dh likes me to drink with him too.

We can take the moral high ground together! I am buying some becks blue, I find it pretty easy to drink and a reasonable swap for cans. I just need to be commited and organised.

Frouby Canshop my border collie would be out all day regardless of the weather if he could. He can't complain, he gets at least a 10km run every day but would run all day if possible.
Welcome Lellow it is very hard to be AF if you have a DP who drinks, let alone one who encourages you to do so when you are trying to be dry.
Frouby I'm glad your Dsis is feeling better now after her op. I know it is a job to get the right dose of synthetic thyroid medication. I have nodules and the doctor doesn't think they are malignant but says she won't know for certain until they are removed.
AF Day 4 tonight, so is DP. Will have wine tomorrow, but we are both feeling a lot more energetic after a few dry days. 6am starts are much easier to deal with.

LellowYedbetter · 04/04/2019 23:09

I did it! Day one - dry. Going to bed 100% sober

NC4Now · 04/04/2019 23:51

Good work Lellow. I think Day 1 can be the hardest.
Anglaise I say it probably weekly but I am so impressed by your fitness, especially when you’re poorly. I’ve got mega DOMS from my gym sesh yesterday, which just shows how out of shape I have let myself get. Sigh.
I’ve been on lager tonight. Work drinks then I got the taste. The last hour I’ve spent critiquing the Stone Roses first and second albums, compared with the couple of new singles they brought out, with DS1.
And broadening his horizons - Flaming Lips, Boo Radleys etc
It’s been chilled and a nice break from the general urgh that has been this week.
Drinking habits have been fairly weekendish all week so need to tackle that but for now I’m content, so that’s a win.

chooco19 · 05/04/2019 07:11

I've had 3 AF nights this week 🎉 so
I'm pretty happy about that I feel eventually I will jus do it on the weekends x
What I find is my skin is so bad n dry n I look older than I am as I no this is caused my alcohol ! 😩 does anyone drink lots of water to counteract this or use any creams ? Thanks xx

Canshopwillshop · 05/04/2019 08:37

Well done Chocco and Lellow 👍 awesome!
Chocco - I do drink lots of water during the day and don’t find my skin too dry. It makes me feel better by thinking it helps flush my liver a bit.

NC4 - I’m glad you had a nice evening with your DS.

Anglaise - I have a Labrador. She loves her walks and is always up for one but if there’s nothing on offer she just sleeps. I too am in awe of your 10k runs every day! I did a spinning class for the first time in ages yesterday and felt good about that!

Canshopwillshop · 05/04/2019 08:38

Sorry, that should be Chooco, not Chocco! Got Easter on my mind 😅

Canshopwillshop · 05/04/2019 08:40

Oh and Longest, I hope the antibiotics have started to work and you are feeling a bit better.

Anglaise1 · 05/04/2019 12:40

Chooco 3 nights AF is brilliant, do you feel better? Alcohol dehydrates you so without it your dry skin should get better. I drink loads of water because I do a lot of sport but still have dry skin on legs and arms, face is OK though.
Longest how are you doing, are the antibiotics working? UTIs can be so painful.
Canshop Glad you enjoyed your spinning class, exercise is brilliant for the head as well as the heart.
NC4 I'm lucky I have a good constitution, sports have always been easy for me and I don't mind going running in bad weather, just as well at the moment.
4 days AF and my eyes (and those of DP) are so much whiter and brighter. Tomorrow morning they probably won't be.

longestlurkerever · 05/04/2019 12:56

I am a lot better thanks. Yesterday was horrible, nearly weed myself several times but antibiotics are doing their trick, as well as looking the part - they are industrial looking yellow and navy capsules. Am also feeling slightly cheerier, partly because I am lying in the sunshine with no one here to bother me, though need to go and get dd1 soon as the sods have a half day. Promised to take her ice skating while dd2 is out of the way at forest school, but would prefer outdoors really. Still, went to watch her choir sing in the Easter service and that was nice. I am a staunch atheist but I do love a good hymn.

Frouby I hope your DD survives DofE. I met my DH on mine! My colleague wasn't best pleased when I mentioned that when her DD was heading off on hers. We bonded over the bands NC4 is playing to her DS.

Had too much wine this week, but had a nice evening with DH so am not sorry. He has been signed off work for a couple of weeks, which is probably better than keeping taking sick days, and he can cover some of the holiday childcare. Friend is putting out feelers re pub this evening so may go.

Frouby · 05/04/2019 13:58

Glad you are feeling better longest. Get some probiotics down you to ward of the antibiotic induced thrush!

Anglaise I hope you get a choice of treatment. Dsis had thyroid removed and then a radiotherapy treatment as well. Thyroids are good to treat with radiotherapy, there is something only they absorb (I want to say iodine but don't think its that) so it makes it pretty safe to do it without the usual side effects you get as they can target it very accurately.

I have had a day of not doing very much. Need all my funds for the grand national tomorrow so haven't worked today. Been to see cousin and dropped her some washing off to do, done 3 loads in my ndns while they have been at work, been to the local retail park for a few bits for her d of e and then just had a few hours at home waiting for washing machine to finish.

Just stuck mine on a boil wash. Its filling and heating up ok as far as I can tell just not emptying. I emptied it as much as I could the other day but there was about an inch of water in the bottom of the drum I couldn't get out. It bloody stinks Envy. Really drainey and rank. So stuck some zoflora in the drawer and stuck it on a boil wash, then will reempty it by hand and try and get as much out as I can.

Had 3 things break this week. Washer, strip light in kitchen which I can't get out to replace and dh phoned earlier to say his car broke down at work 😭😭😭. He's managed to get it going again though so on his way home.

Am going to feed the chickens, pick ds up from school, take dd to tesco for her food shopping for tomorrow then have a big, fat g and t.

Am working in the morning so won't have too much.

I second Frouby’s recommendation for probiotics Longest. If there’s one thing worse than a chubby chuff it’s an itchy chubby chuff!

Dionysa · 06/04/2019 11:56

Very pissed off with myself, but am going to read everyone's news later!!

Frouby · 06/04/2019 12:14

Dion I am pissed off with me too. Got pissed as a fart last night, slept terribly then got up at 6am to see dd off and work.

Her rucksack is ridiculous. She has the bare minimum in it, food for the 2 days, the tent and water and the first aid kit. A change of socks, pants and clean sports leggings, a fleece and her waterproofs and her essential wash stuff (tiny travel sizes).

Am hoping that the teachers divvy up some of hers to the boys. Dd weighs 7st 9lb and her rucksack weighs about 3stone. They are only supposed to carry 25% of their body weight so I assume they will have to.

She is in a team of 3, they are supposed to split the tent and stove between them but because one of their team is a boy, they have to take 2 tents which isn't helping. And the other girl in the team is tiny and weighs less than dd I would imagine.

Have told her to speak to the teachers and ask for advice. Even if she dumped all her clothes and sleeping mat and shared toiletries she will still be overweight with just the tent and water and first aid kit.

So am a bit worried and as phones have to be off I can't even ring and ask her.

Just having a coffee to try and revive myself. Didn't mean to drink so much but my mate called in and then wouldn't bloody go! 3 hours she sat here, she doesn't drink so I can't blame her for me but I was pissed off as I wanted to sit and chill not sit and entertain someone.

Am very anti social these days.

But have done all my work for the grand national, going to chuck the hoover around, tidy up a bit, walk the dog then have a nice bath and get my pjs on.
