What little things make you smile when you see them out and about?

I love to see these little things when I’m driving around:

Someone waiting at the bus stop/to cross a road wearing headphones/earbuds and they’re having a dance and really getting into it 🕺💃

Dogs that are so happy to be out on a walk that they are bouncing and jiggling from side to side with their little tails waggling 🐕

Toddlers who see something fascinating and their parent just stops and looks with them 👀

Groups of teenagers who are just chilling out together and genuinely laughing with each other 😊

People litter picking because they care about their environment 🚮

The first budding flowers in the spring 🌺

I once was at a fairly small museum and kept coming across a man with a very young baby (probably only a few months old) strapped to his chest. He was talking him through every single room, display and artefact as if he was giving another adult a proper full blown tour. I still smile when I think of it and think what a brilliant life that child is going to have.

That’s the loveliest thing I’ve read for ages.

Spring flowers -daffodils, crocuses, snowdrops on grass verges and in the wild. Currently, there is a beautiful pink cyclamen that flowers for about a month around the base of an old oak that pass on my dog walk. Always makes me feel hopeful and happy.

Post box toppers - anything that people have clearly put a lot of effort into for no real purpose or function, just to look lovely and bring colour to the world. Ditto window boxes and hanging baskets.

People playing cricket. Dog walkers. Babies in prams. Pregnant first time mums doing baby shopping who have got it all to come (and have no idea what’s ahead!)

Strangers sharing jokes or pleasantries.

Lovely thread OP!

I love all of these, it's the little things that make life so rich.

FeralFucker · 02/10/2026 17:49

Seeing the shaggy old highland cattle on my morning dog walk, with their great big pokey horns, having a lovely scratch on the dry stone wall (and dislodging the stones).

Guerilla gardening. There is a grass bank outside my house and every year I buy a packet of crocus bulbs and plant them in there. This year I also have a packet of wild flower seeds for a patch of waste ground.
More flowers make everything better.

The gang of blue tit's who own our garden, taunt the cats and sleep in our open porch, all fluffed up.

The kestrels who always circle the A14 around Kettering and are a marker of the road for me (likewise the adult store and cocktail bar inexplicably located on the A1 towards Leeds which always makes me giggle)

Dogs who wag their bums not their tails. My cats coming to meet me when I pull into the drive. The geese starting to gather and practise their v formations in the evenings.

Fairy lights.

When toddlers are wearing some sort of wellies / sparkly skirt / fancy dress / rain jacket combination!

Hedgehog holes cut into garden fences. There's one I pass regularly as it borders a footpath. Someone (presumably the fence owner) has now added a little stone step below the hole.

Squirrels doing parkour. I recently saw one leaping from roof to roof and tight-rope walking along a telephone cable.

Two children zooming to school on their scooters, closely followed by Grandma on her own scooter.

Old people holding hands. I’d cry over this

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 02/10/2026 18:07

A row of rain-wet terraced roofs with the sun shining on them, going down a hill.

A sudden whiff of gravy from a house at dinner time.

The roar of the crowd in a football stadium, carried over the city on the wind, on a Saturday afternoon.

WouldYouLikeAnyToast · 02/10/2026 18:07

Seeing a rainbow. I love them, always cheers me up.
Ladybirds
Squirrels scampering up trees

I walk home from work in the mornings through a senior living development, and one of the older ladies is always having her cup of coffee by her window and we wave to each other, as she’s starting her day and I’m ending mine.

It’s especially lovely now, it’s nice and chilly and usually a bit foggy and the sun is just coming up. Most of the houses in the development have potted chrysanthemums or pumpkins on the stoop, and it’s such a nice quiet little walk.

Yeah :) that makes me happy.

And hearing people laugh together, like proper belly laughs. It always makes me laugh too.

Cadeaukatze · 02/10/2026 18:12

My neighbours recently got two little cats. They find everything exciting and it's so funny to watch them, like chasing leaves as the wind blows them. They also tried to chase a magpie and at the last minute it flew off and they looked as if "oh, I didn't realise it could do that". Like a wildlife show in front of my desk!

Crikeyalmighty · 02/10/2026 18:18

I agree with all yours OP

MaeshoweDragon · 02/10/2026 18:24

Our house is near the railway, and every time you hear the horn we know it means there is a happy child (young or old!) crossing the footbridge and waving at the driver.

Crumbelina · 02/10/2026 18:27

Big, bald headed babies with a massive smile on their face.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/10/2026 18:30

Dogs with a really good stick
Dogs when they see their few “proper” mates in the park, spot them from a distance and go up to them (always reminds me of Gary and Tony in old men behaving badly episodes. “Maaaaaaaate” )
when people tell my dog she’s a good girl and she comes back all proud to tell me

and non dog related things- anything that looks like someone has just taken their time, delayed gratification, and done something properly. Like a really good hanging basket (needs prolonged attention) or tended garden, a beautiful craft item, or something like that. In an instant world, it is so rich to see time spent on something just for its own sake.

scalt · 02/10/2026 18:37

Freight trains! Just the sight of a massive amount of cargo being carried in one go. I’ve also seen the huge ships at Felixstowe; which also has its robotics for loading and unloading the ships. Best of all is the train which is full of new cars, which passes through London a few times each week.

endofthecorridoor · 02/10/2026 18:38

Groups of women all dressed up hair blow dried sunglasses on sitting outside our local wine bar laughing and chatting you can’t beat a girls lunch out xx

Noticing cute little details on buildings and houses. Pretty window boxes, nice pots with plants, a door painted a bright colour, a quirky number or house name sign. Small touches that show care and pride in the everyday environment for everyone to enjoy.

Oh yes I also love those things. I am starting to add in details like that to my new home. On a different note I love to see my dog walking along the upstairs hallway on his way to his bed at night. He’s just like a tired little old man as he wanders along and into his basket. Lovely thread @ItsCloudyToday Thank you 😘.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 02/10/2026 18:49

Cows being turned out for the first day in spring, when they're kicking their legs up, and lambs skipping about!

I also love to see happy dogs (I have a very photogenic Collie who has an excellent smile!), people out with their friends and having a good catch-up, cats sunbathing with their pals on a warm driveway, and small children using that special loud voice to ask questions that the parents have to make up an amusing on-the-spot answer to in front of a busload (or equivalent) of people 😂

Pudmyboy · 02/10/2026 18:58

When someone is running for the bus and the driver sees them and waits

Justaquestionplease · 02/10/2026 19:00

I love seeing babies when I'm out and about especially when they are staring absolutely mesmerised at everything around them.

Great thread, dogs in cars with their heads out the window, living their life.
Lovely babies and toddlers, appreciate how hard it is but now mine are grown up, love to see other happy children out and about.

Yes the dogs one is cute.

devildeepbluesea · 02/10/2026 19:07

My little dog is a ball carrier, he simply won’t let me carry it for him. I love it when all the people in the cars we pass are clearly smiling at his wiggly little self, proudly carrying his ball up for morning ball fun.

We had a step free pedestrian railway crossing until recently when the Network Rail bastards closed it illegally. DD would always wave at the drivers if a train was going by, and they would always wave back (she’s 13). I loved that.

All the hot dogs cooling off in the little pool in the woods near me.
