Growing up did you have bread and butter with your evening meal?

I was pretty much always given it, either to make a chip butty or to mop up gravy. I used to enjoy it, so might just start it again, who cares about calories!

Not routinely. If it fits the meal.

Smallpoxy · 24/09/2026 06:56

No.

MyballsareSandy2015 · 24/09/2026 06:57

Yes we did, in the 1970s, prob a bit of nimble 🤣. Seems very odd now but I think portion sizes were much smaller so total calories were possibly less then. Also it bulked out the meal making it cheaper.

UsernameHoarder · 24/09/2026 06:58

Yep. And everyone here loves it if i put a plate of buttered bread down! But i do only do that if it's something like egg and chips for tea.

Takes me right back.

CoffeeAndCakeBringMeJoy · 24/09/2026 07:00

Occasionally; I remember feeling like it was a treat. I only remember having it with either chips or some kind of stew/hot pot.

Pabbel · 24/09/2026 07:06

Yes , it was to fill us up.

Itchthescratch · 24/09/2026 07:06

Never. I didn't even know it was a thing until I was older and other people refernenced having it.

ItsAlwaysTwins · 24/09/2026 07:07

No, never.

BitOutOfPractice · 24/09/2026 07:08

With a roast dinner it wasn’t put out on the table but mom would butter some bread if there was gravy to mop up. Food of the gods!

TheBers · 24/09/2026 07:10

Yes every meal. It was mainly for my dad who was a farmer and needed the fuel.
Carb and butter is always good though.

Fewer restaurants do a abread roll now I notice.

Theolittle · 24/09/2026 07:13

Yes. In the 70s and early 80s. Portion sizes were much smaller and we had white bread and butter to supplement

PermanentTemporary · 24/09/2026 07:14

No, never. Rolls with soup, yes, toast for breakfast, yes. My parents grew a lot of potatoes so they filled us up with those.

mindutopia · 24/09/2026 07:17

No, but I’m not sure I had that sort of family. We didn’t really have meals together and we ate weird stuff. From about 12, I started cooking for myself.

jksiiuidjuf · 24/09/2026 07:17

No not heard of that. I don’t think it would really go with the kind of meals I do tbh! We don’t have chips. Buttered bread on a roast just sounds wrong! A stew or casserole maybe.

AgnesX · 24/09/2026 07:17

Not unless it was a fry. We always had a good size portion of other carbs. Then a biscuit or cake with a cup of tea afterwards.

PersephoneParlormaid · 24/09/2026 07:18

Perhaps it’s an age thing, I was a child in the 70’s, and my dad born in the 40’s had it too.

Only with fish and chips or soup.
My Dad would often cut some bread for himself at the end of the meal to ‘mop up’ it always made me feel a bit sick and I would ask to leave the table.

When my kids were going through a fussy phase and not eating much we had peas, cucumber and bread and butter with nearly every meal so they’d eat at least something.

bryceQ · 24/09/2026 07:18

Yes I did in the 90s. Always.

Missey85 · 24/09/2026 07:19

Nope 🙂 bread was for school lunch only

Same here.
Never with a cooked meal.
Not an age thing here. I was born in 1959. Maybe a cultural thing as my mother was born and grew up in Germany.

PersephoneParlormaid · 24/09/2026 07:19

I have garlic bread with pasta now, and naan with curry, so not a lot of difference really.

LivingTheDreamish · 24/09/2026 07:22

No but it sounds nice! A good way to fill children up.

Naan with curry isn't double carbs though, unless you are doing rice as well. At home we have rice or naan. At an Indian DH and I will share one rice and one naan between us.

pulpJarvis · 24/09/2026 07:25

Yep, child of the. 70s here too, with two older brothers, one who ran semi professionally and one who worked on a farm. So there was frequently bead and butter as a side to fill them up. Hollow legs. Middle class, ok financially, and Scottish background. I liked soft white bread and butter.

then mum got into a healthy kick and it was all ryvita and brown bread.

there’s a fish and chip shop with a cafe I go to occasionally with a friend, and you get strong tea and a round of white buttered bread as standard. It’s very old fashioned but rather lovely.

Pinklightning · 24/09/2026 07:25

Yes, my mum put it in a basket ready buttered. My nana put it in either a basket or on a plate and had little Denby pots of butter and a side plate.
