Growing up did you have bread and butter with your evening meal?

I was pretty much always given it, either to make a chip butty or to mop up gravy. I used to enjoy it, so might just start it again, who cares about calories!

Yes with stew or soup. But it did depend on the soup. If it was tomato we would be given crackers/cheese .

Yes, mostly. My parents were scandalised when I mentioned that the meals at the university halls of residence didn't include plate of bread and butter.

The evening meal at our house was called tea.

MalbecMakesMeHappy · 24/09/2026 21:47

Yes. Basically if a meal included chips, then bread and butter would be included.

Fish and chips
Egg and chips
Pie, chips and gravy

Delicious!

& tea. It was a long whole before i realised that people drank anything other than tea with their tea. I can remember going to a friend's house and instead of tea they had a jug of water on the table. This seemed very sophisticated.

MatronPomfrey · 24/09/2026 22:15

We did in the 80’s and early 90’s. Setting the table was placing cutlery, condiments, plate of bread and tub of butter. Years later I heard it was a poor people thing to do. I hadn’t realised at the time. It isn’t something I do, unless for chip butty or mopping up gravy.

Yesreallyitsme · 24/09/2026 22:22

With meals like fish and chips or sausage and egg, yes. And if there was any bread left over then we could have it with jam on for pudding.

FrangipaniBlue · 24/09/2026 22:27

Yep. Pile of it on a plate in the middle of the table for people to help themselves !

We don’t do it in our house but it’s a habit DS has gotten into of his own volition!

robinsnest1967 · 24/09/2026 22:33

Yes!!! Mostly the 70s but occasionally early 80s!

AlecTrevelyan006 · 24/09/2026 22:36

Sometimes it was all we had for our evening meal.

bababamama · 24/09/2026 22:40

No, I was born in the 70’s

TeenLifeMum · 24/09/2026 22:45

No, my family were very much a cook from scratch house with a stay at home mum. I only ever had frozen pizza or chicken nuggets at friends’ houses. However dh, born 1980, always had bread on the side. He grew up in a house that ate frozen meals and bread on the side. Money was tight. I assumed it was to reduce meal costs. I’d not seen it until eating with dh.

Chaosatcollege · 24/09/2026 22:46

No.

Tcateh · 24/09/2026 22:48

South Wales 1970s.
Definitely a bit of bread and butter with tea.

I also remember jam sandwiches for supper some nights.

Kickinthenostalgia · 24/09/2026 22:52

It’s was an option if we wanted it, my mum never advertised it but if we asked we were allowed. as we got older we’d have to do it ourselves. I grew up in flats so no dining room so we all basically ate in the front room. Any big family dinners were always at my nans and she had a table.

backformoreofthesame · 24/09/2026 22:58

Anything cheap to fill us up !

SmallandSpanish · 24/09/2026 23:01

Gosh, I’d totally forgotten about that! Yes. What a lovely memory.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 24/09/2026 23:03

Not as the norm, but if we ever had a chipper or Chinese takeaway, there would be bread and butter with that. I can remember helping my mum butter the bread while my dad went to the chipper or Chinese in the car. Otherwise only with soup for lunch.

Russiandollsaresofullofthemselves · 24/09/2026 23:19

I’m a child of the 80s and bread and butter was always put in the middle of the table at our evening meal. Funnily enough I gave the kids bread with their dinner today (rare occurance) and it made me think about it.

I had war time parents and as well as bread on the side, much more bread based meals such as
Breakfast of mashed banana on bread
Snack of sugar on bread
Eggs on toast or fried bread for tea

Sofuckingsad · 24/09/2026 23:44

Yes. And a pot of tea too.

Copperoliverbear · 24/09/2026 23:53

Yes every night 100%.

EmmaB1309 · 25/09/2026 09:45

yep! Crusty bread if parents were feeling flush, but mothers pride plain bread was the best!

ScreentimeInTheMeantime · 25/09/2026 19:33

Yes! I had forgotten about it. Thank you for the reminder

Sueandthegoldfish · 25/09/2026 19:36

Only with salad or fish and chips.
But I did have a Yorkshire granny who managed to serve three courses at one meal containing Yorkshire pudding 😆
