Growing up did you have bread and butter with your evening meal?

I was pretty much always given it, either to make a chip butty or to mop up gravy. I used to enjoy it, so might just start it again, who cares about calories!

Yes, we did, but the meal portion was much smaller than I would serve now.
I think of it as being a Northern, working class thing?

Retro12 · 24/09/2026 08:23

Yes!! With most meals except a roast... My siblings loved putting their dinner into the bread and making a sandwich, I never really liked it!

Yetone · 24/09/2026 08:23

I was born in the early 50s. We only had B and B at tea, not lunch. When we moved up to the North, my mother said that more people had b and b with all their meals.
However, we often had bread fried an butter and sugar, with jam on top as a desert at lunch time.

fluffiphlox · 24/09/2026 08:24

No we didn’t. I was brought up in a working-class family in the 60s in South Wales.

CallMeFran · 24/09/2026 08:25

Yes and I still do
sometimes depending on the meal.

jay55 · 24/09/2026 08:26

no it was a novelty for us when we went north and had fish and chips served with bread and butter.

But we did routinely have fresh bread with jam and cream as a dinner during the summer.

MummyOre · 24/09/2026 08:26

No, i grew up in the 1970s/80s.

whatsnewbuttercup · 24/09/2026 08:27

Who would have thought that this thread would evoke so many memories?
I’m thinking of my 60s/70s childhood now, and also fancying bread and butter with my next meal.

JustWalnut · 24/09/2026 08:33

We used to have some as a snack shortly before tea, probably to stop us from moaning while my mum was cooking! This was in the 80s/early 90s.

Blarn · 24/09/2026 08:37

I'd have bread with soup or with chip shop chips. That was it. I found it really odd at a boyfriends house when I was a teen and they always had bread and butter on the table with every meal. It seems weird to fill up on bread instead of the meal - and we weren't wealthy growing up, portions were small. I think like lots of pps though, mum bulked meals with potatoes. So many plain boiled potatoes...

No not heard of that. I don’t think it would really go with the kind of meals I do tbh! We don’t have chips. Buttered bread on a roast just sounds wrong! A stew or casserole maybe.

Do you live on Mars?

ErrolTheDragon · 24/09/2026 08:41

It was generally available, our evening meal was ‘high tea’.

LorenaWood · 24/09/2026 08:42

No but also we never had drinks with our meals either

My parents were northern, both teachers.

beaglescurleduplikebagels · 24/09/2026 08:44

No, never (unless dinner was soup). Grew up in the nineties.

Failedcrunchymum · 24/09/2026 08:45

No, but we sometimes had it with jam or honey as a desert.

Aydel · 24/09/2026 08:46

Yes, North London working class.

Valeryvictorious · 24/09/2026 08:49

Yes we had bread and butter with a meal. There was always a teapot on the table as well.

Elbowpatch · 24/09/2026 08:52

Yes. 1960s

Alwaystired23 · 24/09/2026 08:52

I grew up in the 80s and 90s, and yes we used to have bread and butter, depending on what we were having. I'd usually be trying to take a slice before tea was ready.

I only do it now, if we're having sausage, egg, chips type meals, which isn't very often. DS1 absolutely loves it!

Wishiwasincornwall · 24/09/2026 08:57

My mum would always whip out a loaf and start buttering while my dad went to collect the chippy which was only a couple of times per year. My nan always used to give us a buttered bread roll with soup every Thursday. In the summer if mum was doing a proper salad she would slice a baguette and butter that and put it in a bowl in the middle of the table next to a bowl of batchelors tomato and herb pasta and it made it feel so posh.

PersephoneParlormaid · 24/09/2026 08:59

I’m glad it’s bringing happy memories to some, it reminds me of my DM who always provided tasty meals despite having little money. I wish I could cook like she could.

Not us as my family were a little bit grand. But the farming families around us would load up buttered batch bread in the middle of the table. I assume to fill everyone up.

Nobody was overweight. The plates were smaller and the bread was better quality in the 80’s though.

RampantIvy · 24/09/2026 09:12

and the bread was better quality in the 80’s though.

If it was commercial white sliced bread I doubt that it was.

PetrichorAndPie · 24/09/2026 09:16

Grew up in Yorkshire in the 70s. We didn't, but my mum grew up with it for every meal(they were a pretty poor, working class family with lots of children to feed) to fill them up.

She always offered it with fish and chips though. Apparently Harry Ramsden's serves it when you eat there so it's the way to do it!
