Growing up did you have bread and butter with your evening meal?

I was pretty much always given it, either to make a chip butty or to mop up gravy. I used to enjoy it, so might just start it again, who cares about calories!

Only occasionally, with certain meals. Always loved it when we did, somehow bread and butter at the dinner table tasted divine, whereas bread in my lunchbox tasted terrible.

Now I live in Finland where bread is eaten with basically every meal - bread for breakfast, bread with lunch (hot meal, not sandwiches, always bread and marg with school dinners here), bread with dinner, and bread for supper. I do not go along with this and only do bread and butter with certain meals that warrant it, like soup, or if there's not enough dinner to go round properly so bread to fill up on (when the children bring back unexpected guests usually)

I was always given a slice of buttered bread with stews, casserole or hotpot, also with sausages chips and beans. I pop on some part baked bread rolls with a stew or casserole or home made soup.

& tea. It was a long whole before i realised that people drank anything other than tea with their tea. I can remember going to a friend's house and instead of tea they had a jug of water on the table. This seemed very sophisticated.

This thread has made me think - I care for my brother who is losing a lot of weight - I’m going to try some buttered bread on the table at tea time! Used to love it growing up

Loving this thread- brings back lots of nice memories
