Growing up did you have bread and butter with your evening meal?

I was pretty much always given it, either to make a chip butty or to mop up gravy. I used to enjoy it, so might just start it again, who cares about calories!

No we didn't. I'm glad, I don't like bread. The phrase 'mop up' makes me feel sick. I think i need to stop reading this threadGrin

Mop up makes me feel sick too! I can’t stand gravy either.

Giggorata · 24/09/2026 11:34

No, apart from a dinner roll with soup, if we were having that as a first course.
South East, in the 50s and 60s.

Tiddlywinks63 · 24/09/2026 11:50

Only with fish and chips, home cooked and never from the chip shop, or soup.

notanothernamesurely · 24/09/2026 11:51

Never.

Venusunbroken · 24/09/2026 12:02

With certain meals only like egg and chips or sausage and chips.

i don’t serve bread with a meal now, unless its garlic bread, someone said up thread they make enough pasta not to need it, but it’s not about need, we always have more than enough of the main course, but garlic bread is something we like with it, if we have people over and I make a spag Bol I always put garlic bread out too, I also put it out for other meals, like chicken and chorizo.

in restaurants, the bread course is the norm, but it’s usually nice rolls, not two slices of cheap white bread with some butter slapped on, which is what we had growing up.

id not consider doing it now, too much food basically and we don’t wish to be cavalier about cals. If I was going to eat another 3-400 cals I’d chose a small dessert.

The mention of jam butties on here made me think, I’ve not had one for years, so I did today. It’s delicious, can’t think why I’ve gone so long without.

Never had that but we had other carbs. I think it originated from when we used to mainly eat stews/broths with bread and needed it to fill up as it was cheaper than meat etc. I think (as an obese person) it’s better to fill up with more protein as carbs may fill you up and taste nice but we were never really meant to eat them like we do, it was just because better foods priced common folk out.

Lulu1919 · 24/09/2026 20:28

Only with fish n chips on Fridays

CormorantIsland · 24/09/2026 20:29

My Granny did with trifle!

my Granddad with stew.

but nothing else.

Nitgel · 24/09/2026 20:31

Crusty rolls with fish and chips

Tamega · 24/09/2026 20:32

I am Portuguese and back home my parents generation still have bread with every single meal.
They also have white rice with every meal too….

DeftGoldHedgehog · 24/09/2026 20:33

Yes we did.

Nofeckingway · 24/09/2026 20:39

My MIL used to do this . Sometimes two different kinds of bread . Butter or margarine in dishes . On Sundays added more than one type of potato, mashed as well as roast . And maybe two sauces like white sauce , or parsley . Choice of desserts too . The table would be full . I was surprised as I had never eaten like this . I never ate the bread as it was sliced white or brown cheap loaf which I hate .

CrushingOnRubies · 24/09/2026 20:42

I didn’t as I never ate it so mum wasn’t going to waste food. But my dad did and still does sometimes… his appetite has lessened

stayathomegardener · 24/09/2026 20:45

70’s childhood.

Homemade bread was for dippy egg and toast soldiers, soup, with winkles, pate and rarely sandwiches.

sliced french baguette (near the South coast) for Mussels in white wine.

I don’t think bread was a daily staple.

DH North West farming stock had bread with every meal, carbs on carbs and especially to mop up gravy.

ilovepixie · 24/09/2026 20:45

I went to boarding school and there was always bread and butter on the table at meal times.

FindingMeno · 24/09/2026 20:47

No, but if we were hungry between meals we were told to have a slice of bread and butter.

MrsClattenburg · 24/09/2026 20:48

NO - born in 1976 (me)
YES - born in 1968 (DH)

HoldMyWine · 24/09/2026 20:48

No. I’m 55

eleanorwish · 24/09/2026 20:52

Never to accompany a meal, but if there was left over gravy, we’d use a slice of bread to soak it up ( no butter though). Northern working class, in my late 50’s

CloudyWithAChanceOfCustard · 24/09/2026 20:57

Yes with almost every meal I think. Even a Sunday roast! I remember my mum making a mashed potato ‘butty’!

I do still like a slice of bread and butter with some dinners if I’m honest…if it’s fish and chips (or anything with chips 👌🏻), a ‘breakfast-for-tea’ dinner (bacon/sausage/egg combo) for example…a bit of bread always works 👌🏻😁

SirChenjins · 24/09/2026 21:02

Not to mop anything up - but for a while in the early 70s I remember having bread, butter and jam after dinner with a cup of tea. I was very young so may be misremembering, but I know my parents were skint at that point, so it may have been a cheap way of filling up after a small dinner. Sadly they are both dead now, but it's one of those questions I wish I could ask them!

CloudyWithAChanceOfCustard · 24/09/2026 21:08

Just remembered something else…if there was any bread and butter left on the plate at the end of the meal, dad would get the jam pot out and we’d have jam sandwiches after. We bloody loved that as we never had pudding! I think mum often buttered more bread than she knew we’d eat just so we could have jam sandwiches 🥪😍

Owlbookend · 24/09/2026 21:10

Yes. Always on the table when i was a child (although not buttered unless someone had some - someone nearly always did). For bread & gravy or chip butties or just a bit of bread on the side. I dont always put it out now, but it is always an option. A world without bread would be sad.

Hayley1256 · 24/09/2026 21:14

Only with certain things - fry up, egg and chips (proper homemade chips), stew (would be rolls rather than bread) etc
