What did you/your family consider a treat growing up that really wasn’t?

I’ve just randomly remembered that when I was younger me and my sister thought it was the most amazing treat to have our mum’s bath water after she was finished with it. She didn’t even use bubble bath so it was literally just lukewarm water but we absolutely loved it. This was in the early 90’s and we had regular hot warm bubble baths which makes it even stranger that we were so pleased by using mum’s old water!

I loved the mint choc chip Gino ginelli. It had delicious chewy minty bits in it. I'd forgotten about it till now 😊

We used to drink orange ‘Rise and shine’ from goblets at the dinner table on special occasions, I dread to think of the artificial crap thst was in that stuff.
We also had a Mars bar cut into thirds, was great when my sister moved out and I got an upgrade to half!
My nan had all the treats: fondant fancies, kitkats, crisps. Happy days round her gaff.

Chocolate, an ice cream from the ice cream van. A Chinese takeaway or renting a video. Going to the pictures or a day out or a meal in a restaurant. New clothes that I got to choose which wasn’t often.

Dad used to deliberately buy too much marzipan for the Christmas cake, and portion the excess up for him, me and and my sisters. My mum wasn't that keen, yay, so all the more for us.

He was still doing it way after we'd all moved out.

Being allowed to have small animals, gerbils were the best part of my whole life. Maybe not a food treat but I loved them so much.

oh and also that purple sented silverskin shampoo, I’d love to smell that again.

We tried this recently for reminiscence purposes, so underwhelming 😂

Sitting in the car with a coke and packet of crisps while my parents were in the pub.

Camp coffee made with milk and ice cubes, with a straw in summer.
Being allowed to polish the family's shoes.
Any kind of extremely rare takeaway.
Feeding the ducks

Planter's peanuts. My dad would bring a 2oz pack home from the pub on a Sunday lunchtime, and the 4 of us would share them. They tasted completely divine. These days "dry roasted" is supposedly the same flavour, but it's nowhere near as good as the original Planter's.

Butterscotch Angel delight. Tinned syrup pudding. Sitting in the front seat of a car. All things I used to think were amazing!

Yes. I still think orange juice is a luxury item.

Being allowed a sip of my great grandads beer and once a puff on his fag

Corn on the cob swimming in salted butter (a fork each end sticking out ) and a slice of Bread and butter to mop up the melted butter

A bag of crisps Or a small chocolate bar Or a can of pop from the garage on long journeys.

Sponge fingers and Horlicks at my nans before getting into bed where the electric blanket had been on

Buying an Enid Blyton book and a pack of floral thanks you cards with my birthday money

Being allowed to dial the number for my parents making a landline call

Sitting on my dads lap ‘driving’ while he was in the drivers seat parking the car

Pulling skin off the Sunday roast chicken and burning lips with fat

Mini cereal boxes and cream off top of milk

Oh yes, the front seat of the car was a privilege and a delight.

We called them holiday cereal too when our grandchildren came to stay with their parents, there was always one that no-one wanted.

We didn't really get sweets because we were poor. Me and my brother were allowed to take it in turns to fill up the co-op saving stamp book and I generally redeemed mine to buy a huge chocolate bar. Other than that I used to sneak some of the doggy chocolate drops when I visited my friends house.

A box of malteasers shared between a family of 5 while watching the generation game on a Saturday night! Probably fewer than 10 malteasers each, I think but definitely felt like a treat.

you all had proper treats - mine was broccoli water 😁 literally the broccoli cooking water left to go cold and then drank from a mug after dinner. Somehow me and my sisters were convinced that it was enough of a treat that we'd squabble over it, and watch each other to make sure no one got more than her fair share!

Oddly we had plenty of ice creams and pizzas and normal treats... but broccoli water was sold as the absolute exilir of health and we all wanted it. That and grapefruit 🤷

Yes!!!!! It was dusty & borderline dangerous but I loved it. When my big cousin came to visit from England he got the mattress up there, & climbing up the ladder to go see him in the morning, riffle through boxes of photos & try on old hats & coats was a thing of wonder.

See also driving home after dark when visiting aunt & uncle on a Sunday every 2/3 months. It was only just over an hour, but I remember feeling the excitement of the moors, making way to city lights. It was intoxicating. I usually fell asleep in mum's lap & was carried into bed half asleep. It all felt like something out of someone's else's life in a book, rather than my usual Sunday bath, in bed by 7 sharp life.

Being allowed in the loft would have been street but my dad never let us. Ever! When my kids wanted to go in the loft I let them as it was fully boarded 😀
