What did you/your family consider a treat growing up that really wasn’t?

I’ve just randomly remembered that when I was younger me and my sister thought it was the most amazing treat to have our mum’s bath water after she was finished with it. She didn’t even use bubble bath so it was literally just lukewarm water but we absolutely loved it. This was in the early 90’s and we had regular hot warm bubble baths which makes it even stranger that we were so pleased by using mum’s old water!

Jam sandwiches.
We were only allowed them after we ate a healthy sandwich, but because I had a small appetite I never got one.
When my mum was away for work one time my dad got me and my siblings to help tidy the whole house. Our reward was jam sandwiches (without having to eat a healthy one first)!

A packet of 9 sovereign from the chippy vending machine for 10p. 3 of us would then go into the rec and smoke them.

I used to love the boxes of satsumas at Christmas, we used to argue about who got the one in the wrapper, the same as we always argued about who got the green Penguin!

Oh another of dad's treats was apples, peeled and cored, stuffed with golden syrup and raisins and baked.

Only to be eaten 'before your mother gets home'

I actually tried to find a wrapped one about 7 years ago! Sadly they are no more!

This made me laugh - my kids also do this with the bath, despite having their own bathroom, with their own bubble bath, and no limit on the number of baths/showers they can take themselves. Instead they use my bath water - one after the other as it grows increasingly lukewarm.

Plain bread is bread of the Gods, especially toasted with butter.

I need to go out & find one to buy now!

My DC are all sourdough & croissants & brioche. And whilst lovely, they don't touch plain bread or home-made soda bread.

My brother begged and pleaded for any kind of pet, even a mouse. He got two of them, when he was ten.

It also felt like a treat when it was “socks off” time - when the weather was warm enough to wear sandals and shoes without socks.

Sunday desserts: Packet cheesecake that you made up, I think it was called Greens. Packet trifle with dream topping. Ski yoghurt - hazelnut flavour.

It was SO not everyday in the mid 80s. My dad refused to eat it, wasn't too keen on rice either 😆. He'd be nearing 90 now. If it wasn't potatoes or bread with the meal he was a bit out of sorts 😆.

My DC make the best pasta from scratch... he still wouldn't eat it.

I’ve also just remembered, the end of the cereal, all the powder in the bottom…making sure I timed it perfectly so that my sister didn’t get it but I did.

AND if you ever got lucky enough to get the bottom of the Coco Pops and Frosties on the same day…like winning the lottery.

my mum used to make us a milkshake that included raw egg in it - we thought it was an amazing treat but it was apparently considered to be some kind of early 80s (very mainstream) health drink for children - before the salmonella scare of course!!!

“Hot buttered toast”!

My mother somehow played an absolute blinder by re-branding toast and butter as “hot buttered toast” which we’d have as a treat when we got home from school. Why we thought it was so much better than the usual toast with butter we’d have for breakfast… 🤷‍♀️

Also, the free thingy, often a plastic model, in the bag inside the box. Cereal pouring had to be done by the parents to monitor the finding of such a treat.

Fighting over who got to drink the juice from tinned peaches, raw jelly cubes, red lemonade and from early teens J-17 the first Friday of the month with a chocolate chip muffin. Great thread!
