What did you/your family consider a treat growing up that really wasn’t?

I’ve just randomly remembered that when I was younger me and my sister thought it was the most amazing treat to have our mum’s bath water after she was finished with it. She didn’t even use bubble bath so it was literally just lukewarm water but we absolutely loved it. This was in the early 90’s and we had regular hot warm bubble baths which makes it even stranger that we were so pleased by using mum’s old water!

The cream on the top of the milk bottle. Toys in the cereal box (pogs?) and also licking the cake mixture after baking. That felt like a massive treat as I was able to do it until about 6 years old and then my mum banned us doing it for a few years due to salmonella outbreak in eggs.

Being allowed to lick the cake mix off the spoon used to make the cake. Eitherwise known as lick pooney.

That still is a treat in this house !

Going to the Wimpey.

Orange juice and Venetia definitely.

We’re in Scotland and used to have what we would call ‘plain’ bread, and getting ‘pan’ bread, which is basically something like white warbutons now, was a real treat. Plain bread was denser with a crust only on two sides, it was pretty dark and chewy.

Changeisstillpossible · Today 22:57

@sherbetlemonade was it a treat though?
😜

Evaporated milk on tinned fruit for dessert!

Yes!! Such a treat! I used to say when I grow up I am going to eat it every day. Of course I haven’t had it since.

New leather shoes. I was ecstatic!!!!

Bananas. Even as a child they were my fav thing in the world. I can remember mum cheering me up after a rotten day where I'd caught my fingers on a heavy BBQ lid, by offering me a nana! I still love them and have one most days for lunch. I have no idea why they were rationed as a kid, unless a lot more expensive to buy back in the 70's?

Peaches !
I was poorly when I was about 7 or 8 and given one to cheer me up
it still works decades later

Sorry, meant to say new leather SCHOOL shoes.

Being blindfolded was a massive treat!

This was because we would then be led to a present which was too big to wrap, or on a non-present day, something nice set up ready and waiting, such as the climbing frame or paddling pool, or Easter egg hunt.

Anyone remember when pasta was still seen as quite exotic?! I was discussing this with my DH recently and he refused to believe/remember that in our 80s childhoods it wasn’t the family dinner staple it is now! Plus I grew up in central London and he was in the rural midlands, so it doesn’t quite track that his environment was much more cosmopolitan 😂

Also remember stopping at Little Chefs on holiday and thinking they were utterly incredible!

dustabsorber · Today 22:59

Going up to Oxford street to see the lights at Christmas and having a bag of hot chestnuts from a street vendor.

Orangina in glass bottles on holiday in France. We didn't have fizzy pop at home, but apparently this was ok. Love that stuff.

Mr kipling cake at grandad's every other Sunday, we took it in turns to choose. Dad and I preferred Jamaican ginger, the others varied their choices.

A Mars Bar. Sometimes I could only manage half. Today me is mystified.

You're not alone. I remember my friend eating a whole one every day at 6th form, whereas a few bites and I was done. They were really big back then though!

Yes to all those that said Vienetta. Had it as a child and passed that on to my own children as a treat.

My mum was well weird with sweets and we used to think it was an insane treat to get a couple of chocolate drops (like the ones you use for baking). I’d go fucking crazy.

Also my dad’s mum used to bribe us to behave with a singular fruit pastel - not a pack, just one. A half for me when I was little because I was “the baby”. I’m 27 now and am still referred to as “the baby” even though I’ve had three babies!

We were very poor, but not that poor. My mum was just so strict with sweets and chocolate that even a little bit would have us going mental. My grandparents on my mums side was the real MVP though, used to let us have biscuits and “illegal yoghurts” on the regular god rest their souls. Illegal yoghurts were the muller ones btw, with the chocky bits.

+1 for fresh orange juice poured out ceremoniously in tiny glasses, and because of the tiny portions it would go sour and fizzy in the bottle, but still be officially a great treat…I wasn’t convinced 😂

Yes, what were the tiny glasses about?

Ha, my granny used to keep 'naughty cereals' ,aka crunchy nut cornflakes, coco pops etc in for when she babysat us at hers. Much nicer than bloody muesli.

To this day I have never eaten Vienetta! And I remember they hype. Mum wouldn't spend out and then just grew up and moved on with food I guess. I really should try one by all these posts :-)

During the school summer holidays we had one lunch out in BHS and one trip to the cinema. That was it. No other paid for activities at all. I was perfectly happy with that.

Going to the Wimpey.

My dad used to insist on taking us to the Wimpy rather than McDonald's, because in the 80's the Wimpy bizarrely did table service and McDonald's didn't, which meant that feeding us burgers and milkshakes were ok if someone was bringing it to the table for us.

Ap42 · Today 23:09

A macdoanlds! It was an annual treat, my Mum would treat us with her Birthday money, but wouldn't eat herself to cut down on cost. She only told us that quite recently.
