Reins fell out of fashion and child abductions and accidents went down! Yet always always on here ‘reins, why wasn’t the child on reins, call me old fashioned <sniff> but reins.’ It’s really distasteful tbh. It’s thirty three years since James Bulger and people still go on about it.

Don’t feed it, just report it. Hopefully it’lll be gone soon.

Yes, it was. I will look up some stats for you but off the top of my head I can think of over twenty cases of ‘stranger abductions’ in the UK during the 1980s involving prepubescent children.

For me reins were more for kids who would potentially bolt straight into traffic rather than to stop them from being abducted.

I never used them either but I did consider it once after my DD went missing in M&S on Oxford Street. She was hiding inside one of those circular clothes racks whilst me, other customers and staff were all frantically searching for her. She was just playing hide and seek basically.

@Snoken but pedestrian fatalities have fallen dramatically from the 1980s to today. That’s despite more cars on the roads. So I am not seeing any overwhelming evidence that reins keep children safe. The statistics would actually point to the opposite (which I am obviously not saying is the case, it’s a myriad of factors) but this idea that in days of yore children toddled safely next to their parents on reins and now toddlers are vanishing and being mown down by cars isn’t really accurate.

Grandad did run after him, but fell. By the time he had got up Noah was out of sight.

My daughter-in-law had that backpack/reins setup for my neurotypical grandson and it was absolutely brilliant.

This is unbelievably sad for everyone involved. As the mother of a three year old autistic boy with no sense of danger who frequently tries to run off, this story really hurts me to read. I really hope they find him hiding safely somewhere.

It is actually on the national news, I've just seen it on GMB, a reporter is there. It's also the main story on Anglia news, of course.

Oh gosh that’s worrying about the waterways - I was wondering if there was large bodies of water nearby as I didn’t see mention of that in the article I read.

How awful for little Noah and for his family, hoping there is some good news today. It is so strange there have been no sightings despite the (rightfully) extensive searches and enquries.

stranger incidents are (unfortunately) pretty level across the years since the 50’s. It’s very rare and thankfully always has been but because it is newsworthy it makes it seem more prominent if that makes sense. I heard the figures on more or less who are a reliable source. Obviously there’s blips but it’s not like it was super safe in the past and not now or vice versa.

as to the reins debate, mine were on reins, end of (2000’s) and proper harness mothercare ones that could be clipped into buggies, high chairs etc if they had d rings

Yes my son is 16 now but severley autistic and non verbal its heart breaking i hope they find him and hes ok 🙏

@LondonLass2026- my DD aged about 3 ran off at Legoland - took about 5 mins to find her (she was fine, standing by the water play bit). We had a younger DC in the buggy, at the playground part, we thought the other was watching DD and she wandered off. Thank goodness it was ‘just’ Legoland and not an actual playground.

And if he had been taken shortly after going out of sight he could be in a car and anywhere in the UK by now. Get his photo out there nationally.

Years ago, my youngest went missing in a huge forest park which surrounds a lake. He was about five or six. One minute he was running around in front of us with his friend and the next the pair of them were gone. After my friend and I searched for them for about half an hour, we called the police as it was getting dark. They took it extremely seriously and the whole situation was utterly terrifying and surreal. Eventually a woman out walking found them sitting on a bench. She was one of many wonderful people who took my number in case they found them. The policewoman I spoke to said they had already put in a request for a helicopter. People talk about their blood running cold - it really did feel like that. I know just a tiny bit of what the family is going through and that tiny bit is horrendous.

If you really want to go and help, they are asking for volunteers. The parish clerk was in local radio this morning saying they need as many volunteers as possible to cover the whole area. The village hall is where it's all being co ordinated from.

My Grandson has one on his teddy in case he ever loses it and that’s a bloody toy!
This isn’t going to have a happy ending unfortunately, that poor boy.
