Last thing the family needs is speculation.

I hope hes found soon.

Are you policing the thread?

AutumnAllTheWay · Today 10:32

I cant believe he wasn't spotted by several members of the public if he wandered further afield. The further a three year ol walks on his own, the more chances of being seen

Madamefroufrou · Today 10:33

AutumnAllTheWay · Today 09:40

How far is the extended search? Close enough to have got there on his own?

The altenative doesn't bear thinking about

little Emile’s bones were found a long way from his grandparents house
Ben Needham has never been found also from his grandparents house
the child dangled from the ship dropped into the sea by a proxy grandad
will never be found

I imagine Police have the dogs out by now
Any normal person spotting a distressed lost child would call the police

I had a child bolt whilst in a park, she ran so fast, in a straight line headed
for the busy main road. I was heavily pregnant and couldn’t give chase.
Calling her had no effect. There was no one about.
Luckily someone walking along the road ran after her and lead her back
to the bench I had been resting on while she happily sat plucking heads
off daisies before deciding to bolt.
The speed of her up and running took me completely by surprise.
That it didn’t make any logical sense had no consequence of course.

I bought reins which she fought against, sat down, all that power a 15
month old child wields, not understanding that all the time we want to
keep them safe, which I fervently hope for little Noah, wherever he is.

Thinking this morning of little Jamie Bulger and his mother, Denise

We used reins - a little fluffy monkey rucksack (fitted very small important toddler toys) with tail to hold. Was fantastic, no worries then. Even with an air tag I'd panic, that can be lost too. Better than nothing tho.

Reins weren’t for us but I can see how they would be useful for some children / circumstances.

Scent disperses as time goes on and can be affected by different surfaces, temperature, weather conditions etc. By the time trained dogs would get to the location, it might be too late. Very highly trained scent dogs could follow days old scent but I imagine there's not many of them in the Uk

I didn’t think of there not being many of those dogs.
But I can’t think of a better use for one than a search for a deaf toddler.

It’s true though. The comments were deleted anyway.

Well he's only 3... not all 3 year olds can talk that well even without being autistic, and some neurotypical 3 year olds have a tendency to bolt too... maybe he just can't talk very well yet, without necessarily being Non Verbal as a symptom of profound autism, iyswim

He can't respond to his name because he's deaf.

The DM specifically stated he cannot respond to his name because he's autistic, not deaf. They emphasise that he's only partially deaf so he can presumably hear but cannot speak (yet). Agree that a 3 year old might have a speech delay due to hearing problems.

Forgive my ignorance but if he is mildly autistic like his dad described does that mean he isn’t non-verbal like was reported?

it is interesting that they are now searching further afield, I’m not an expert (obviously) but I’d usually assume in cases like this that they actually haven’t gone that far and are closer than we think, but there must be a reason they are searching further.

A couple of years ago a French toddler ran off from his grandparents garden in the French alps - think he was called Jacques - despite extensive searches in a heatwave/difficult terrain he wasn't found until the following spring

His body was just outside the search zone so he had wandered beyond what the searchers had thought possible - think it must be difficult to assess

Lots of unpleasant speculation at the time - none of which turned out to be true

That’s what I mean…a child on foot should be able to be tracked.
isn’t that what the dogs do?

If he’s gone into water then there will be no scent trail.

Well if the DM said it, it must be true

I agree, I just meant it could take time for them to get there

Bitsostuff · Today 10:40

It could be considered a mistake to have taken him out and assuming that it was safe to do so.

That’s not a criticism. There are plenty of parents of severely autistic children who only ever take them out with two people present for instance because it’s just not possible to keep them under control single handedly.

But often they don’t realise that until something happens and the child bolts off too quickly etc such as happened in this case.

Unfortunately in this case it’s had more disasterous consequences, but I imagine that if the grandad had managed to catch him they would have re-thought the strategy in future.

It is absolutely a criticism. You are allocating blame on the basis of no knowledge. Just stop.

Fairyyqueen · Today 10:41

looking on google maps, as few of the new build houses are facing the path, so if he went as far as the houses they might (emphasis on might) have got it on a ring door cam it they have one (obviously I am sure the police have checked that already!)

Marcipex · Today 10:42

Never2many · Today 10:38

If he’s gone into water then there will be no scent trail.

But there would be a trail up to the edge of the water.
So that would be informative at least in a worst-case scenario. Would narrow down the search.

Obviously I very much hope that that is not what has happened.

Ok. Well obviously we all do what gives us reassurance when it comes to our children, but if they are NT I’m assuming the reins came off at 3 - what did you do about ‘other people’ then?

Grammarnut · Today 10:45

So sad. I hope they find him and he is okay. Poor little boy. Every parents' worst nightmare.

Oh well before 3 (in our case). What did I 'do about them'? Prevented any of them stealing my kids, if they were considering it.

Emile - the bones were found at the side of the road in an area
which had already been well searched
the finder took the skull into the police then could not find the
spot with the remainder of bones
such a beautiful child
as they all are of course

Alondra · Today 10:48

I hope he's found soon alive. Unfortunately with a small munchkin non verbal and with hearing problems it doesn't look good.

And I fully blame his carers (family). A child this young, with serious disabilities for his young age, shoiuld be aways be in sight.

Contain4 · Today 10:49

Officers have also confirmed he is non-verbal, partially deaf, and autistic.

He is non-verbal, partially deaf and autistic (and only 3).

So he probably won’t hear his name being called, he can’t respond with words and is not able to go up to a stranger and ask for help.

I hope to God no predators have got to him.

This is every parents worst nightmare.

Well done to everyone joining in the search.

I wonder if they have search and rescue dogs, or they’re only used in a confined area.

But if you could do that afterwards without reins, why couldn’t you do it before without reins?

Sorry, I’m not being critical of the use of reins, I’m just wondering how they made such a difference in that respect.

Delphiniumandlupins · Today 10:50

CrazyMidget · Today 03:05

You should DEFINITELY look into toddler reins, in that case.

I need them for one DGC definitely. The other two know me better/are in a buggy unless in a confined space. I also make sure they don't get a 'head start' because you often can't predict how toddlers will react.

Orangemintcream · Today 10:50

The BBC are also reporting he is non verbal has hearing loss/is deaf and won’t respond to his name.

I desperately hope he is just very frightened and hiding somewhere.

It is so so easy to have this happen. My mum lost me once when I was about 5 - I was in a shop with her suddenly couldn’t see her and thought she’d left so ran out looking for her …all while she was looking for me. And I was older and able to understand more. Still happened.

A nice lady took me to the information point to announce a lost child just as my mum arrived to ask them to do the same.
