Mine is a hum dinger.
DH is significantly older than me - he is retired and I work PT. We have planned carefully so we were able to retire somewhere sunny. During our 35 years together he was a medium earner and I was the higher earner - his job was flexible for school drop offs/ pick ups ect. We have 2 adult DC and grandchildren.
He has joined a hobby group and last night they had a social evening so I went along.
Random woman - who was the wife of the organiser I found out later- " Well, you've landed on your feet - HIS children and ex wife must hate you " said very loudly in front of a group of people I don't really know.
I did put her straight , but WTF !

My husband earns a LOT of money and at his work events I cannot tell you the amount of times people assume I don't work ('so what do you do with your time') then are shocked when I say I do. It's SO BORING.

Wbeezer · 12/09/2026 16:26

Mine are a bit dull but several times I have been mistaken for the Librarian when browsing in the library racks. On one occasion a man got very irate with me when I couldn’t tell him where something was and just replied “sorry I don’t know” and carried on browsing. I wear glasses and tend to look quite serious, that’s my only explanation.
several times people have assumed I’m a vegetarian too ( never have been but DH was for several years and waiters often put the veggie option down in front of me instead).

I was quite taken aback when I took my Dad to A&E and it was assumed I was his wife. I mean, I may not have been looking my best, but there was a 40 year age difference...

Dontlletmedownbruce · 12/09/2026 16:40

Probably a silly one, but when I moved house I got friendly with a few neighbours as I had 2 young children and was often out on the green with them. I mentioned something about my older son, they hadn't realised I had 3. There is a large age gap. I said he isn't around today as his Dad took him to a match. Later I mentioned John, my husband. It didn't occur to me until much later that they presumed we were a blended family and my kids and different fathers. It was the way a comment was phrased that made me rethink. I am married to John and have 3 children. I was really awkward trying to bring it up so they knew my kids all had the same father without sounding like i was being negative about blended families. I remember agonising over it as I couldn't find a way to weave it in. To this day I don't know if they still hold that belief. They know John now, who doesn't really look like my eldest at all.

But why would you mind that much if some neighbours thought your eldest child was from a previous relationship to the point where you were ‘agonising’ about how to correct them?

I mean, I’m sure I’ve said to people I don’t know that well that ‘DS is away with his dad’ rather than ‘DS is away with my husband’ and they may have assumed that his dad isn’t my DH, but why would I care either way?

I'm a civil servant. I was supporting a minister that I'd never met before in a meeting with an external stakeholder that neither she nor I had ever met. In the middle of their conversation she turned to me (silently taking notes which was what I was there for) and said "well, you're just a wishy-washy Episcopalian liberal". I was so taken aback that I missed the rest of that bit of the meeting and had to skate over it when writing the minute

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 12/09/2026 17:10

A colleague held a pub quiz fundraiser for charity. The team I was on came second.

The next day, as we were chatting about how it went, someone on my team said that we were second and that I’d carried the team (her words).

Colleague “oh, that surprises me!”

Thanks, love. Thanks.

I couldn't drive when I was pregnant with oldest DC, aged 30. So my mum would take me to some of my antenatal appointments - she was a non-exec Director of that hospital trust so a lot of staff there knew her.

She told me a few weeks after one of my appointments a staff member she knew had a slightly concerned conversation with her as she thought I was a teenager! I did look young, yes, but I'm not sure quite that young - I suppose being accompanied by my mum might have helped the impression!

JudyTeeny · 12/09/2026 17:27

A woman at work who was quite new, so we didn't know much about each other, asked if I was offended by jokes about "gingers". I thought it was a peculiar thing to ask, as I don't have red hair. I asked why she was asking and she said she thought I might be offended on behalf of my husband. I asked again why on earth that would be the case and she said she just assumed my husband had red hair. I've never been able to work out what she was thinking!

tommyhoundmum · 12/09/2026 17:27

I bought myself a new car at 22 only for people to suggest my Dad bought it for me.

My tall statuesque African American friend put me down as her next of kin when she went in hospital for minor surgery. Next thing we knew I was being called her partner by the nursing staff. I am 4ft 10, white and 25 years older than her. Neither of us are gay but we did giggle at that mistake.

Thewonderfuldollypartonsbra · 12/09/2026 17:28

Not me but my (had just turned 18) dd

We where out shopping in tesco with her younger siblings when they wanted to go look at the toys but I was really pushed for time

She said she'd go with them while I got what I wanted and they'd meet me outside a few minutes later

I'd just paid for whatever I'd bought when I heard dd shouting

I raced over to find a miserable looking old lady, shouting, poking her on the arm and spitting in her face about 'how fucking disgusting it was that dd was a mum to 3 small dc and how she must be on benefits'

Dd was shouting back 'they are my siblings!I couldn't have given birth when I was 7!Shes their mother!' points at me' (The younger dc where calling her by her name and seemed to enrage her even more as dd 'had trained them to call her by her name' so that was some sort of proof that they where,in fact, her dc)

I ran up and this woman would not let it go that my dc where dds and that she must be on benefits as 'she looks the type' and 'so your the fucking granny!it's disgusting that you allowed her to have dc so young!'

We just walked away-i mentioned that she must have dementia as nobody would act like that if they didn't

About a week later,I was back at the same tesco and got chatting to a member of staff-this lady didn't have dementia, she was just a nasty woman who loved to start on anyone she saw as 'weaker' and thought wouldn't stand up to her

She was stunned apparently that dd had shouted back as most people just walked away and had ranted to the member of staff about how rude dd had been and that we where lying about the young dc being mine

Batshit-there is no way anyone could have mistaken dd for their mother and I honestly thought she had dementia or I would have rang the police

oh that made me tear right up, 🥹 lovely story!

Great to hear you had such good times with her 🙏

Thewonderfuldollypartonsbra · 12/09/2026 17:42

My next door neighbours moved in years ago and where as nice as anything for the first year

She got to know everyone in the street and then decided SHE owned the street and everyone must follow HER batshitrules (like not being able to park on our own drive as we where not allowed to drive on 'her' road,we where not allowed to set off for work at 7:30am because she likes a lie-in or that we where not allowed to have friends round)

Most people (including us) ignored her and carried on as we where

For some reason, she targeted us as the rebel leaders of the street, leaving others to follow our lead and started up a massive hate campaign against us

We ignored her so she ramped it up by banging on our door and screaming abuse at us

One being 'im going to phone your landlord and im going to have you thrown out!'

Best of luck with that love,we own our house (fully paid for) and she's council (no snobbery-i grew up in a council house and have lived in 3 as an adult)

Oddly, once I contacted her landlord and explained about what she was doing, they had a word and she's died down

Bullies are cowards at heart

She was heard shouting (not long after they had a word) 'how the fuck do a couple like them, afford a house like that?'

She just cannot wrap her head around the fact we don't have a landlord and in fact,we do own every brick, roof tile and window frame of our house

WearyAuldWumman · 12/09/2026 17:48

I had similar, @Motorwayview .

DH was older than me. We both worked in the same field until he retired, but I was the higher earner.

He had been married before and he and his first wife had adult children together.

After the kids has flown the nest, his wife became very close to a younger colleague. DH left when he discovered that the first wife had spent the night with the colleague (who then became her partner).

It didn't help that his ex allowed people to think that he'd left her for a younger woman.

One time, DH arranged to meet up for a meal with friend and wife whom he'd not seen for some time.

It was fairly obvious that the friend and wife were a bit surprised when they saw me - I think that they were expecting someone rather more gregarious, rather than the mousy woman that I actually was.

Noodge · 12/09/2026 17:50

That I am stuck up, up myself, conceited, love myself etc etc.

I am in my forties, blonde, toned, fit and stereotypically, I look good.

I also grew up as a fat, (perceived as) ugly child, was bullied heavily all through school. I had no friends and was very isolated. I thought I was stupid and weird and just there to be the one to make fun of. I had an abusive Father who had me believe I was totally worthless. I am about as far from 'up myself' as one can get. I just finally got my eating disorders under control and began going to the gym and treating myself well. Some days I can barely believe what I see in the mirror, let alone 'love myself'.

That I have the assets I have due to family money and my parents doing it for me. I bought a derelict house and remortgaged it to buy another, in my twenties and I now own a few. I have not taken one handout from my parents since I was a teenager borrowing £20 for a night out.

That I am 'after their man' or 'a different person around men'. Is another assumption, women tend to think. I've had women tell their husbands to not go to places if I am going. I cannot fathom it. I haven't been with a man since my early twenties and have only dated women since. I have no interest in your man whatsoever!

I have lots which I'll post as separate comments!

A particular favourite moment of mine was on holiday.

As a British person abroad, many think that we cannot or do not try to speak the foreign language.

We were on holiday in Italy; just sat down in a restaurant awaiting a menu, when 1 of 2 waiters standing together made a physical comment about me.... I was almost delighted to retort in a similar tone! I can still see the shock on his face! 😁

Not quite the same, but...

Some years back I had a Latvian pupil.

Mum came to Parents' Evening accompanied by her son and by a friend who could speak English.

I gave the lad a positive report and said that occasionally he was a bit chatty, but that that wasn't really a problem.

The friend translated. Then - presumably to stop the boy from knowing what was being said - the mum replied to the friend in Russian: "Oh, I can't say anything - I was just the same at his age."

I couldn't resist: I laughed and said in Russian "Well, that's normal, isn't it?"

Both women looked surprised and then burst out laughing. I explained that I had studied Russian at uni and had had student placements in the former Soviet Union.

Someone suggested that we must sell drugs as we don't go out to work and don't open our curtains early in the morning. (It was almost noon today!)

People seem to think I'm a poor unemployed chav.

I'm a plain jane, wear cheap supermarket clothes, don't wear makeup, don't have my nails or hair done, so I can see in a way why they might think that I'm poor (although not why they think I'm a chav!).

I remember when I had my second child, we'd moved area and the Health Visitor was a complete fucking bitch to me. Kept telling me that I didn't own our house, that we "must rent". She really looked down her snooty nose at me.

However, my assets and savings are valued at over £1million, and I run 2 successful businesses. Our 4 bedroomed detached house is owned outright. Whenever we buy a car, it's always outright. We don't do leasing etc. We're just sensible with money, very financially responsible and don't waste it on material items.

I have two children, eldest is from a previous relationship. Eldest’s dad was useless from the moment my baby was born and I’ve always done ALL of the parenting. I have 90% of the custody and receive no child support. I’ve worked very hard to put a roof over his head as a single parent and provide him with as much opportunity as possible. Life moved on, met my now partner and we have a child together too.

For some reason DP’s step mum (they are not close) always assumes that my eldest lives with his dad and that I just see my child on weekends. Every single time I see her, even after meeting my eldest. No matter how often I correct her. It really offends me tbh. DP is also very close with my eldest and he is basically a father to him. It just baffles me.

People have mistaken my extreme shyness for arrogance. I am as self-deprecating as they come!

JoyousWriter · 12/09/2026 18:16

Christians seem to think I'm one of them.

I've no idea why as they're not in the majority.
