Mine is a hum dinger.
DH is significantly older than me - he is retired and I work PT. We have planned carefully so we were able to retire somewhere sunny. During our 35 years together he was a medium earner and I was the higher earner - his job was flexible for school drop offs/ pick ups ect. We have 2 adult DC and grandchildren.
He has joined a hobby group and last night they had a social evening so I went along.
Random woman - who was the wife of the organiser I found out later- " Well, you've landed on your feet - HIS children and ex wife must hate you " said very loudly in front of a group of people I don't really know.
I did put her straight , but WTF !

Ohhhhhhh there's been a few.

I've had some work done to make my house accessible, via Disabled Facilities Grants - on BOTH occasions, it is not just assumed, but actually argued with me, that I can't possibly own my house, it must be rented from the local HA. From the contractors doing the work. They kept saying they had to get Local HA to agree to this that and the other and I had to keep saying 'what has it got to do with them, this is MY house, I own it...' eventually I told them to check with the case manager overseeing the job if they didn't believe me!

I mean, how on earth could a disabled person own a property... pft.

Specialist Heart Nurse (who I have since found out is notoriously rude to everyone and no one likes her, patients and colleagues alike) - spent half my first appointment with her ranting on about how terribly unfair it is... that she and her husband can't afford their mortgage because now he is ill, and they can only have two holidays this year not four, and they've had to sell ONE OF the Jags... and they can't get all the benefits I get because they have too much in savings/she earns too much and I must be laughing in my 'free' house...

I took it for a bit then asked how her inability to live within her means was my problem or relevant to my appointment, and told her I only got PIP and WTC, my house is only 'free' because my Mum died when I was 27 so I could buy property with my inheritance and I worked more bloody hours than she did!

I left and requested NEVER to see her again... and the cardiology secretary snorted in laughter... I said 'am I not the first person to have called with this request'... reply - more barely contained snorting. (My sister later had to see her and got much the same experience!).

Well a fair few people assume I can't speak the local language of they hear me speaking English to my DC. I do enjoy switching and seeing their faces. I certainly have an accent but am pretty fluent and work in a fairly demanding job. The job also seems to surprise them. Also people I met when I was still learning are surprised that I'm much better.

People assume I'm a snob if I mention watching ballet. It's not like I only watch ballet - I also love watching rhobh! It's the same with classical music - somehow if you like classical that's all you listen to.

What is rhobh please?

myfaceismyown · Yesterday 20:48

@EvieBB
I had a few guesses, such as: Royal Horticultural Orchid balancing happenings, the new and exciting game show Red helicopter or blue helicopter?, or perhaps Really hard oyster baiting hootenanny - then I googled it. Real Housewives of Beverley Hills. Not as exciting sadly.

Not me,but my father

If you saw him in the street, you'd think he's a tramp

Coat falling to bits, tatty trousers held up with string, moth eaten jumpers and boots held together by a wish and a prayer

He also smells faintly of soil (he's a gardener) and always has dirt under his nails

Hes a multi millionaire but has been thrown out of posh shops for being so scruffy

It amuses him as he always pays in cash and can dump a few k on jewellery (my mother is obsessed with expensive jewellery-the jeweller he does go to adores him and treats him as the valued customer he is)

That,a few bottles of beer and a new motorbike every 3 years are the only things he buys as anything else is a waste of money

He once walked into a shop and asked to do a part exchange on the bike he wanted

The bloke looked him up and down with a snear and made a really silly offer on his bike (about 2k less than what he wanted and knew he could get)

My father looked him up and down back, walked out and went down the road, got a good deal and paid the rest in cash

My friend happened to be dating the shop bloke who'd assumed my father was skint and went green when he released he'd let a good deal slide through his fingers

Never assume anything-my father will never go back to that shop so they not only lost out on that sale, but many more over the years

The fact my father is loaded isn't relevant to me-im nc with him and will never get a penny out of him now or when he goes

I'd rather be poor than put up with my mother's abuse and him enabling her

That my life-limiting illness is from me being vegan. It’s annoying because it gives people the excuse they need to keep eating slaughtered animals. I know that I would not have been any better (probably worse) if I ate meat.

Well to suggest that you being vegan has given you your illness is ridiculous. However, you suggesting that they are "using it as an excuse" to keep eating meat is equally ridiculous. We are built to eat an omnivorous diet, that you choose not to is your choice but it isn't most people's.

They won't change their diet on the basis of your beliefs, any more than you will change yours on the basis of their's. Would you start eating meat if there was cast iron proof that your health would improve as a result? I suspect not. And they wont stop eating meat if they were given cast iron proof that their health would improve.

I'm another who regularly is assumed to be a vegetarian or vegan, I'm neither and have posted about it on here before and the general consensus is that it's because I have a nose ring!
I do dress a bit "hippy" sometimes but I've also had it from people at work, where I have to wear a uniform, who have never seen me outside of work.
I have a work colleague who is actually vegetarian and no-one ever believes her!

I dont know, people do say things like this. 'I'd stop eating meat but my sister's friends dad's cousin's half brother doesn't eat meat and he's always ill and his hair fell out' etc etc.

It's a common misperception I find.

I've been vegan 25 years, long before it was trendy. I look like a muscular barbie and have no visible piercings. People are always surprised to find out.

That I’m a doctor. I’m not, and have no pretensions to be! I don’t work in an adjacent career. I have no idea why this has happened but I’ve sat on a table at a wedding with people who thought this, at least 2 other parents at my child’s school, my dc’s last teacher and my midwife!

We have a big age gap too and if people realise, they very occasionally make similar comments to what OP has received. Assumptions that he earns well, our house must have been his before we married, etc.

Nope, he was a struggling small businessman when we met and I had a steady job. Now he's an average earner and I'm a reasonably high-earning freelancer. The house, which we chose together and pay for together, is in my name (because his age shortens the term too much to have him on the mortgage). It's not about the money, any more than anyone else's relationship is. We love each other, have the same goals in life, and have been married for 5 years, together for 10.

We also very occasionally get 'but you'll have to look after him when he's older'. Well, that will be fair enough, given that he's done the same for me. I have a quite serious remitting and relapsing illness. I have had/will again have periods where he's had to be my carer for extended periods and he's been fantastic about it.

We're 37 and 55 and both look in our 40s at the moment, so luckily it mostly doesn't come up, but it always irritates me when it does.

A colleague held a pub quiz fundraiser for charity. The team I was on came second.

The next day, as we were chatting about how it went, someone on my team said that we were second and that I’d carried the team (her words).

Colleague “oh, that surprises me!”

Thanks, love. Thanks.

I had a similar experience. I was in a team with my husband at a charity quiz in our village. We don't normally get to these things due to work commitments so although we are recognised in the village, we are not really known socially.
After us winning the quiz, I was cornered by two " ladies who lunch" types who said
" We didn't think that someone who looks like you would know so much"
WTF?

I went to a wedding dress shop, and the very first question I was asked was how much weight I was planning to lose before the big day.

It would have been totally inappropriate to ask anyone, but I’m a skinny size 8. I don’t know what weight they thought I could lose.

Well I lost weight between fittings three of them but we were renovating a house at the time, so it was work, dash to house, work till ten then bed. Plus every weekend. So you might have dropped a bit. It really depends on circumstances.

I dont think it is unreasonable in the context of wedding dress shopping. I would imagine more brides want to lose weight before their wedding than don't. Given the lead times with wedding dresses, plus the cost of faff of alterations, they need to get it as close as possible size wise.

Coffeebeforework · Today 14:39

In the same vein as @Aaloyisha of inappropriate comments in bridal shops I was a pear shaped size 12. The seamstress looked me up and down and declared loudly "You need Wonderbra!" Cheers for that!🤣🤣🤣

I went to dinner with DH colleague . He asked if I worked, then said oh it’s nice to have a bit of pin money. I earned more than either of them.

Please tell me you told him, I need to know that he knows that you want more

Another one about people making assumptions.

My then husband and I were at a party many years ago and hadn't been married very long at the time; I was 29 when we got married and he was 12 years older; first marriages for both of us.

Another couple came over and introduced themselves and we got chatting. They had a similar situation to us: fairly recently married but with a slightly bigger age gap - the husband was slightly older than my husband and she was slightly younger than me and it was his second marriage; we found all this out during a fairly short conversation during which she asked us our a fair amount of questions including our ages and how long we'd been married.

Arm with this information she turn to her husband and in the sort of voice you might use if you'd suddenly made an exciting discovery, declared, 'see, I told you it was their second marriages'.

I think she thought she'd found her soul mates.
