Mine is a hum dinger.
DH is significantly older than me - he is retired and I work PT. We have planned carefully so we were able to retire somewhere sunny. During our 35 years together he was a medium earner and I was the higher earner - his job was flexible for school drop offs/ pick ups ect. We have 2 adult DC and grandchildren.
He has joined a hobby group and last night they had a social evening so I went along.
Random woman - who was the wife of the organiser I found out later- " Well, you've landed on your feet - HIS children and ex wife must hate you " said very loudly in front of a group of people I don't really know.
I did put her straight , but WTF !

That I'm academic, did ballet and am Italian.

Sadly not for all three 😭.

When I'm not being mistaken for a Donald Trump supporting member of Westboro Baptist Church by French training course tutors, have been taken to be either one of those two easily mixed up nationalities - Australian and Danish.

Australian I can understand - just - but why Danish? Denmark is such a small yet specific country?

wheredidiputmyphone · 12/09/2026 13:31

I am tall and have long legs and I got asked in a pub near Waterloo station if I was a ballet dancer. Why I don’t know apart from I was wearing leggings. I’m clumsy and have terrible balance. perhaps it was an unusual chat up line.

When I was 14 I was pushing my baby half brother in his pram down the high street. My Dad and step mum were a bit further ahead looking in the shop windows. Two older ladies walked past me from the other direction, tutted, shook their heads and glared at me while one almost shouted “disgusting, at her age!” 😂😂

MrsMoastyToasty · 12/09/2026 13:43

Before DH's colleagues met me they thought that I was tall, blonde and considerably younger than DH.
I'm short, fat, dark haired, and older by a year.

The one that really stuck with me wasn't about me, but about one of my colleagues. We worked a reception desk in an inner city office with service users from many different ethnic and religious backgrounds. They assumed that because she was dark skinned and spoke with an Indian accent that she was a Hindu, Muslim or Sikh. She was born in India but to a Methodist family and her name was from the Old Testament.

EsselteFilingBox · 12/09/2026 13:47

Also a nationality one, I've been taken for being Russian by Russians, Polish by Poles, Irish by the Irish and French by a French guy who looked sad when I responded in my school girl, lousy accent french!

Buggabootwo · 12/09/2026 13:50

I was recently asked if I was Russian, by a Russian! I’m 100% British and my mum has a line of descent from someone who came over with Bill the Conqueror!

dreamiesformolly · 12/09/2026 13:51

People always seem to think I’m prim and proper and wouldn’t say boo to a goose, just because I can be quiet and reserved in some situations. That’s SO not what I’m like. 😂

I went to dinner with DH colleague . He asked if I worked, then said oh it’s nice to have a bit of pin money. I earned more than either of them.

I choked on my lunch with rage at this one

Dontcallmescarface · 12/09/2026 13:58

I once got asked what it was like to take an illegal drug. When I told them I had no idea as I'd never taken any the reply was "oh well you look like the sort of person who would". I'm not sure what it was about my "look" that made them assume that as I was at work wearing the corporate t-shirt and trousers, the same as them.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 12/09/2026 14:01

When i was much younger my (mongrel) dog had an accidental litter.
Someone I didn't know very well approached me and said she would take a puppy.
Her family initially hadn't been keen but apparently she'd explained that they didn't have homes to go to and I was going to have them all put down 😮
Absolutely no idea where she got that idea. They were very well cared for and I was in the process of choosing suitable owners from a long list of possibles.
If I'd have given her a puppy, I bet she'd have gone around saying she "rescued" it!

That’s funny as I’m also a ‘sun shader’ but when wandering about, exploring, I go really brown, really quickly. Everyone assumes I am sun worshiper because i come back from holidays really tanned. DH always corrects them in a funny, frustrated way as it takes him ages to tan Grin

I am the opposite. I am not a sunbather but regardless of what I do, I never ever tan and never have. Over the years before factor 50 and slip slap slop was a thing, people would delight in giving me their tanning recipes or suggest sunbeds and I just used to smile and nod.

you should have said "yes my husband is grateful for what I give him"

LumiGlow · 12/09/2026 14:03

Through the school Mums ‘oh she’s got tickets far above her station hasn’t she? I heard she complained about the PTA not being efficient before she swanned off’

Thankfully my friend set the story straight that it was nothing of the sort and the PTA shoe horned me out because I was too efficient (whatever that means!) Just wild how Chinese whispers go and it gave me a laugh. If you’d seen my humble beginnings in this world you’d realise I’m nothing of the sort to be snobby about anyone or anything.

violetcuriosity · 12/09/2026 14:31

I assume I have a lot of assumptions made about me, my children are both different races and very different ages.

KojaksLollipop · 12/09/2026 14:46

I was once out shopping at B&Q with my dad, a couple he knew came over to talk and the woman kept looking daggers at me, I was confused. We all said goodbye and were walking away when the woman grabbed me and said “I know his wife, you know. You should be ashamed”….. fgs! I said “I bet I know her better than you, she’s my mother”. My mum and I have explained to my dad that’s why it’s important to introduce people! Lol

BoredZelda · 12/09/2026 14:48

When I was at uni, the guys thought I was really stuck up. In fact, I was just quite an introvert with quite a posh accent.

BoogieVoogieAllNightLong · 12/09/2026 14:58

I once had to go to family court over my children's contact with my exdh. I don't live in a very salubrious area but I had dressed appropriately for the occasion. When I went in and said which case I was there for they assumed I was my solicitor, probably because I wasn't wearing trackies and a baseball cap

SixThirtyTwo · 12/09/2026 14:58

Complete bafflement that a young working-class Irish woman was at Oxford. I was visiting a friend's home in the vac and a couple of her parents' friends kept asking 'Do you mean you're at Oxford Brookes? Or do you mean Oxford Secretarial College?'

SaraHoliday · 12/09/2026 15:51

Many years ago, I went to the birthday party of a work colleague. One of the other ladies had brought her son with her which a few people commented on (no partners were invited so why?).

As the evening went on, someone told me she'd brought her son along to introduce to me!!!! I was not interested whatsoever.

As time went on, this lady was getting exasperated that she hadn't been able to get the two of us to talk and she was drinking quite a lot too.

On the dance floor, she kept getting him to switch places with people to dance next to me (everyone knew her plan by this point so it became very awkward).

Anyway, she eventually succeeded and he only said to me "Would you like to go for a chinese after here?". I said "No thanks, I'm getting a lift back home with Julie in 10 minutes".

The son went berserk at his Mum and stormed out and then she screamed at the top of her voice at me "What's wrong with my son?".

It was like a scene from EastEnders!

I didn't know what to say that wouldn't escalate things further so Julie and I just left!

Back at work on the Monday, she was still livid at me! and kept saying he's single and I'm single, so why not! 🤷

I was never forgiven and I was completely innocent! 🙄

Whosthetabbynow · 12/09/2026 15:59

My dh doesn’t drink alcohol but I do. If we are out and order a lager and a Diet Coke I always get given the coke.

SaraHoliday · 12/09/2026 16:03

We had a new female Manager at work. It was very much a workplace that 'you fitted in - or you didn't'.

We all had a 'team' introductory meeting with her followed by a one-to-one.

She asked me my star sign (which I know virtually nothing about) and then started to tell me how she and I differed and would never align!

(She was absolutely right though! 😂)

Meadowfinch · 12/09/2026 16:06

I've had several colleagues refer to me as "posh" and assume I have an affluent background.

I come from a FSM family with 5 siblings, and an abusive f who kicked me out the first time when I was 15.

I had someone make a snipey comment about trust funds once and I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. It can be very trying.

LimeShaker · 12/09/2026 16:15

That I would make homemade kefir

drspouse · 12/09/2026 16:23

LimeShaker · 12/09/2026 16:15

That I would make homemade kefir

That is bizarrely specific.
On the accent one, my late DM is from another English speaking country and people used to complement her on her English.
I was asked once (not in the UK) what part of Australia I was from. I thought they'd just mixed me up with a colleague who is actually Australian so I said oh I'm not from Australia. Well SOUTH AFRICA then said the other person in a tone that implied I was being totally unreasonable not to accept that I was from Australia and that saying I was South African was unreasonably petty...
(I am English).
