Lighthearted one for you - I’ve offended someone with my dinner for this evening

A fellow school mum popped in to drop some things off for me to take up to the school (I volunteer Thursday afternoon).

While she was here, I got tonight’s dinner out of the oven. I always make something in a tray on Thursdays as it’s a busy day for everyone (me, dh, ds 23, dd 13 and dd 6). It’s a cluster fuck of afterschool clubs, dh working from the office, ds on a late shift. So it just makes sense to have something in a tray that everyone can help themselves to and eat at different times; it’s only me and the 6 year old here at our usual dinner time on a Thursday.

Today I made sausage and bean pie. Sausages cut up, mixed with beans, cheesy mash on top. Easier than sausage, mash and beans kept separately IMO, when people are grabbing dinner.

Lazy bitch, aren’t I? Stay at home mum as well, I should be standing in the kitchen whipping up a three course meal whenever anyone wants to eat.

Anyway, I got it out the oven and you should have seen her face. Appalled that I would feed my family cut up beans and sausages and that were weren’t all going to sit around the table to a freshly prepared meal (we would all have to wait until about 9pm on a Thursday to eat together at the table, sod that).

She would never feed her family this meal. I did ask, would she feed them sausage and mash. Yes, she said. So I asked what the difference was. “This isn’t fresh! You don’t work, you could have made it this evening.” okay, crazy lady.

Anyway, lighthearted as she’s a silly cow, but here’s a photo of the offending dinner that horrified her.

Imagine commenting on someone’s dinner prep 🤣 what a sad life.

I'll have to confiscate that dish to make sure it meets my extremely high standards. Then I think the rest of the family will have to taste it to see if they agree with me.
😀

Ohhh no your don't! I am taking my own plate round to try some , I will even wash up after .

@Helpmyarse if there is a next time just say "nither you or your comments were invited round for tea so what you think doesn't matter what you think"

Just a couple of packs of Aldis own sausages (imagine if I’d told her that 🤣), I cook them in the stainless steel tray in the oven while the potatoes are cooking, chop them up, shove a couple of tins of beans in, top with the mash and then into the oven.

Aside from peeling potatoes (I hate doing that), it’s so quick.

Thank you, I now do not need to ask for the recipe😂

Oh come on.

Yes, we do live a deprived town now (hence the volunteering at the school, they are trying to get literacy levels up) and yep, I do wish I had more money to spend on my appearance, but I didn’t feel judged because of that.

I’m okay with it - I just get down when I wish I could have nice hair sometimes and money to spend on me rather than the do er upper house.

I’ve known this person for quite a while.

I had a timer on to take it out of the oven by the way - my party trick recently is putting things in the oven and completely forgetting about them. If I don’t do it when the timer goes off, things get cremated.

So yes, she dropped some supplied for an event off and came in while she was sorting them for me to take to different places in the school and to a venue - which I am sat outside of now in my car waiting for someone after the reception reading, not using my phone in the school!

So she was there when the timer went off. I took it out of the oven so I didn’t cremate it.

And yes she did say the line about being a SAHM.

Nothing wrong with that. It's a regular in our house. I made the veggie version on Monday with loads of chilli in it, used ready made root veg mash for the topping so less effort and extra veg for the double win.

Yes, all true. I feel like I look like a bag lady as I’m not happy with my hair anymore. My life changed considerably from what it used to be due to some shitty circumstances.

Doesn’t mean I felt judged because of that or made this thread to somehow make me feel better.

And she lives in this area too and sends her children to the same school on the estate.

I just said in another post. She came in as there were things to explain about the things she was dropping off.

I set a timer so I didn’t cremate it while onward browning the cheese. Timer went off, I took it out.

Thats all there was to it.

I really think you should set yourself the challenge of producing ever more "lazy" meals in front of your friend, and I say this as someone who thinks your sausage and mash combo looks delicious.

I'm thinking something along the lines of reheated spam fritters, pre-cooked fish finger and tomato ketchup sandwiches, or my favourite - white sliced bread with beef dripping and salt for dinner - that would blow her tiny mind. What about it @Helpmyarse , are you up for the challenge? 😀

For what it’s worth, sausage pie was a staple when my ds was small and I lived in a massive house in Suffolk, and didn’t look like a bag lady because I was loaded.

I didn’t feel self conscious about what I was cooking.

This is a genius idea I'm nicking!

blackbunny · 10/09/2026 14:53

I think I’d have said”well if it’s not to your liking, don’t have any. I can make you a sandwich if you like”

I had a breakdown 7 years ago. I had a still birth, my dad was diagnosed with dementia, I was diagnosed with a horrible illness, I was made redundant and then a few months later so was dh. It was horrendous. Lots of awful things happened off the back of that, we moved here as she dh is from here, we could no longer afford to live where we were in the SE* due to all of the above, I was hospitalised with my breakdown. We lost a lot. We could only afford a do er upper which was actually a good investment long term. No one goes without but I feel I look like a scruff because everything goes into the house and children and saving to move on again.

Life isn’t simple. I’m still not well, being a SAHM is the option for us at the moment.

*the big house in Suffolk was with my ex husband many years ago when my son was small, he’s 24 next month.

She sounds like a real Stepford Wife!! Your meal choices are your business and I get that you plan dinners around a busy family schedule and FWIW your meal looked blooming tasty 🤪…….I’ll bring my own plate🤣

Aydel · 10/09/2026 14:57

My kids used to love this. Also (and this offended a fellow school mum) Sloppy Joes, made with mince, a tin of tomato soup, soft white rolls and grated cheese.

It does depend on if you browned off the sausages first. I can't be doing with a pallid sausage!

I hear you, ain't nothing worse than a pallid sausage.

Okay, well, you weren’t in my kitchen this morning, so I can’t help that.

I’m not running off now, just got more stuff to do this afternoon.

When my dses were kids, @Helpmyarse, I used to do a frozen-beige-and-chips meal once a week, to give myself a break from cooking. All three managed to survive until adulthood despite my sub-par parenting!

Your sausage and bean cheesy pie looks delicious, and I’m sure my family would have loved it. Your friend should stop being such a judgypants.

seahorsessky · 10/09/2026 15:15

A lot of the kids from our school go to KFC to pick up tea most nights. Maybe introduce her to some of them.

tombombaclot · 10/09/2026 15:28

I’m a SAHM and often make dinners like this, whether we all sit down together at the same time or not. How is it more acceptable if it’s all served on plates separately 😂
My husband also parents & does stuff at home when he’s not working, shock horror!
