Lighthearted one for you - I’ve offended someone with my dinner for this evening

A fellow school mum popped in to drop some things off for me to take up to the school (I volunteer Thursday afternoon).

While she was here, I got tonight’s dinner out of the oven. I always make something in a tray on Thursdays as it’s a busy day for everyone (me, dh, ds 23, dd 13 and dd 6). It’s a cluster fuck of afterschool clubs, dh working from the office, ds on a late shift. So it just makes sense to have something in a tray that everyone can help themselves to and eat at different times; it’s only me and the 6 year old here at our usual dinner time on a Thursday.

Today I made sausage and bean pie. Sausages cut up, mixed with beans, cheesy mash on top. Easier than sausage, mash and beans kept separately IMO, when people are grabbing dinner.

Lazy bitch, aren’t I? Stay at home mum as well, I should be standing in the kitchen whipping up a three course meal whenever anyone wants to eat.

Anyway, I got it out the oven and you should have seen her face. Appalled that I would feed my family cut up beans and sausages and that were weren’t all going to sit around the table to a freshly prepared meal (we would all have to wait until about 9pm on a Thursday to eat together at the table, sod that).

She would never feed her family this meal. I did ask, would she feed them sausage and mash. Yes, she said. So I asked what the difference was. “This isn’t fresh! You don’t work, you could have made it this evening.” okay, crazy lady.

Anyway, lighthearted as she’s a silly cow, but here’s a photo of the offending dinner that horrified her.

Imagine commenting on someone’s dinner prep 🤣 what a sad life.

I can’t believe this woman! How bloody rude!! I read your post and thought how delicious that sounds and how organised of you to cater for your family’s needs that way. She would be appalled at what I rustle up then!

worldshottestmom · 10/09/2026 15:40

Imagine going to someone's house and willingly insulting their cooking and them in the process. Jesus christ. This is why I choose to have very few mum friends 🥴

Looks delicious btw. Like a proper old school hearty dinner. Would take this over some wanky, elaborate quinoa, chickpeas, pesto whatever trash tbh

senua · 10/09/2026 15:44

The woman is a fool. Everybody knows that twice-cooked sausages have more depth of flavour than once-cooked.

Absolutely.
Not fresh????
It’s cooked from scratch ffs.

This has made my day. Looks great and I'm still impressed that you did it this morning (as a pose to me who is going to get those super cheap pizzas and give them those tonight, perhaps with some carrot sticks as the healthy side.)
Who has the energy to judge other peoples choices? It might not be what you would do but who cares?
We have a lot of super yummy mummy middle class types round here. I love listening to the chat.

As a pose..? This made me smile.

IsItSnowing · 10/09/2026 15:58

She’s rude and so is anyone else who feels like judging how you feed your family. What I judge is people who think their way of life is the only way,
The sausage and bean pie sounds great to me. I’m going to veganise it and make it myself. I love meals like this and I’m retired and could spend all day cooking (but I don’t).

ChapmanFarm · 10/09/2026 16:15

The only offensive thing is the improper forking of your mash 😀

But this is a great idea for when I have excess mash and my kids would love it.

I had a breakdown 7 years ago. I had a still birth, my dad was diagnosed with dementia, I was diagnosed with a horrible illness, I was made redundant and then a few months later so was dh. It was horrendous. Lots of awful things happened off the back of that, we moved here as she dh is from here, we could no longer afford to live where we were in the SE* due to all of the above, I was hospitalised with my breakdown. We lost a lot. We could only afford a do er upper which was actually a good investment long term. No one goes without but I feel I look like a scruff because everything goes into the house and children and saving to move on again.

Life isn’t simple. I’m still not well, being a SAHM is the option for us at the moment.

*the big house in Suffolk was with my ex husband many years ago when my son was small, he’s 24 next month.

I’ve been on mumsnet since I my almost 24 year old was a baby, it’s par for the course, and the reason why I name change quite regularly - I have spoken about all of that on here over the years, people on mumsnet have been very helpful with most of it and helped me through some awful times.

I actually name changed last yesterday, as I was speaking about something which was very outing on another thread.

There are ALWAYS people who don’t believe what you say, and pull everything apart but what can you do? I’ve got nothing to hide, so if they would like a blow by blow account of my life and why I have done things, they can have it, it’s no matter to me.

And yes, it was just lighthearted. It tickled me this morning and I thought someone else would have a laugh with me. I needed a distraction for various reasons, so I posted. It wasn’t malicious, even though I think I look like shit and I hate where I live, I didn’t want anyone to laugh at someone else to somehow make me feel better. And I didn’t post as I somehow felt looked down on. It was just a lighthearted thread.

And I admit, as someone pointed out, “what a sad life” wasn’t the kindest thing I could have said about her, that was wrong of me.

Do you know, my family love a mash topped dinner, as do I. As did my dad. I’ve been making it for longer than I care to remember and the perfect forking has always escaped me. I gave up long ago and just sort of plonk it on and hope for the best.

Wait until she hears that I sometimes make dinner the day before. Because that is when I have time to do it.

One of my favourite meals is buttery mash with a couple of fried eggs on top, it's heaven on a plate. My Mum used to make this for us kids when she was short of time or money and I loved it.

I am a useless baker and very moderate cook but making a pattern in mash is the one bit of a anything culinary I enjoy.

You just squash it with the back of the fork and drag it along. I think it might be your super generous helping that makes it harder!

Sunshine697 · 10/09/2026 16:59

Omg! My gran used to make this and called it Rugby pie....for rugby practice evenings! Nostalgia unlocked! Maybe I should be adding it into our family repertoire! So delicious- enjoy!

IHaveQuestionsLotsOfQuestions · 10/09/2026 17:04

If I made that at 9.45am I would've eaten it all by the time the kids were home.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/09/2026 17:05

I mean, I saw this exact tea but with potato smilers on the top instead of mash so…. 🤷‍♀️

I’m coeliac and the sausages aren’t gluten free. This is how I save myself from gluttony. I often spike food that I make my family with gluten containing ingredients so I can’t devour it like some medieval kings buffet before they get to the table.

I’m quite a good cook, but some medication I was on made me gain a massive amount of weight, so I am on a mission to lose it.

I did have a bowl of cheesy mash for a late breakfast though, so that made me happy.

I really think you should set yourself the challenge of producing ever more "lazy" meals in front of your friend, and I say this as someone who thinks your sausage and mash combo looks delicious.

I'm thinking something along the lines of reheated spam fritters, pre-cooked fish finger and tomato ketchup sandwiches, or my favourite - white sliced bread with beef dripping and salt for dinner - that would blow her tiny mind. What about it @Helpmyarse , are you up for the challenge? 😀

Ultimate lazy meal idea coming up: yesterday's leftover pizza cut into slices and shoved in the panini press.

Genius of you to spike it with gluten. Unfortunately I'm not allergic to or intolerant of anything - except willpower - so all food is fair game to me.

I put wavy lines in the mash on top of fish pie.

That looks delicious ☺️ sahm should not be a slave to the kitchen and I am sure your family appreciates whatever you take time to make for them!

Non working parent get yourself doing everything from scratch and ensure your apron strings are attached to the kitchen sink whilst your at it 😆

CheeseAndWineMama · 10/09/2026 17:54

I make pretty much this exact dish for my family when we need something quick and easy with no fuss too. It’s become a bit of a favourite! Hope you all enjoy your Thursday 😊
