Lighthearted one for you - I’ve offended someone with my dinner for this evening

A fellow school mum popped in to drop some things off for me to take up to the school (I volunteer Thursday afternoon).

While she was here, I got tonight’s dinner out of the oven. I always make something in a tray on Thursdays as it’s a busy day for everyone (me, dh, ds 23, dd 13 and dd 6). It’s a cluster fuck of afterschool clubs, dh working from the office, ds on a late shift. So it just makes sense to have something in a tray that everyone can help themselves to and eat at different times; it’s only me and the 6 year old here at our usual dinner time on a Thursday.

Today I made sausage and bean pie. Sausages cut up, mixed with beans, cheesy mash on top. Easier than sausage, mash and beans kept separately IMO, when people are grabbing dinner.

Lazy bitch, aren’t I? Stay at home mum as well, I should be standing in the kitchen whipping up a three course meal whenever anyone wants to eat.

Anyway, I got it out the oven and you should have seen her face. Appalled that I would feed my family cut up beans and sausages and that were weren’t all going to sit around the table to a freshly prepared meal (we would all have to wait until about 9pm on a Thursday to eat together at the table, sod that).

She would never feed her family this meal. I did ask, would she feed them sausage and mash. Yes, she said. So I asked what the difference was. “This isn’t fresh! You don’t work, you could have made it this evening.” okay, crazy lady.

Anyway, lighthearted as she’s a silly cow, but here’s a photo of the offending dinner that horrified her.

You just say what happened and you are accused of defending yourself, you think, “fuck this” and don’t bother coming back, you are definitely a troll. Can’t win!

We both have 13 year old children that were in the same class since reception. So I’ve known her through school for a while.

I mentioned another friend who acted in a similar way who I’d known since we were kids ourselves, sorry for the confusion!

Op you sound lovely and like you’ve been very gracious to this woman, I always imagine that’s how those people talk to themselves and it’s not really about you, she must be exhausted.

i would like to know what your other recipes are though because it’s literally never occurred to me to make dinner in the morning and I can’t think of anything that would reheat so well?

I would be all over this. Sadly my eldest hates both mash and cheese and doesn't eat sausages.

Only read the first page - she is cheeky - anyway that aside I tried it for my lot for tea tonight and it went down very well - thank you ! I don’t like beans so had a jacket spud but I think it will start being a staple in this house ……. Have you thought of doing a recipe book 😂 @Helpmyarse

Nothing wrong with that at all!...its v practical and thinking ahead......and def not lazy - it takes effort making all that mash and actually assembling a pie! I'd have just made it all separately....less labour ha....(although maybe made an onion gravy) and asked people to help themselves xx....or if I'm feeling really lazy (I like to call it overwhelmed/exhausted) it's take out night! Or a supermarket pizza!

Honestly, how can anyone be so snobby about food? My DS won't eat mashed potato or things mixed together, but I love the sound of the pie! I often do sausages with rice or noodles straight after work! Sometimes, we even get a cheeky takeaway 🤣🤣

As someone (a SAHM I guess) who's an extreme from scratch family cook (my kids HATE me), your tea is absolutely not worthy of any judgement at all? I'd have been beyond offended if I were you

Yum. I dont even mash potatoes. Too much faff. So for sure she would run me out of home with a pitchfork
