If you were ruler for a day. What minor thing would you fix.

I am not here talking stuff that would have long lasting political impact or getting rid of people permanently I am talking the smaller irritants that makes your eye roll and you are like "someone should do something about it"

Well for one day you are that someone what would you do?

For me. Potholes on my road and roads near by to be fixed (I would say all but I dont think 1 day would be enough time) but as many as they could manage in each city for the day

Also I would have someone drive around the towns cutting back hedges that are 1/2meter to 1 across the pavement. I know they would look shite after butthat's my minor irritant.

Make a law that people have to walk on the left of pavements and footpaths, akin to how we drive on the road, to avoid the "dance" of both people moving to the same side as they approach each other but on the same side, where they both move to the other side at the same time, then back again, etc. Just stay on the left and you pass eachother naturally. Likewise for other footpath users like cycles who currently randomly pass people on the left or right often without any form of notice/warning. If people (walkers and cyclists) kept to the left except when overtaking, it would make things so much simpler and safer.

I thought the convention was that people walk on the right, especially on escalators. I walk on the right-hand side of single-track country roads with no pavement, except when that would put me on the inside of a bend.

I’d introduce fixed penalty fines for drivers who cruise along in the middle lane of the motorway for no reason other than that they’re bad drivers 😡

I would move the extra day in leap years to June. No-one wants or needs an extra day of February.

It should also be a bank holiday. I should probably know this, but why has Feb only got 28 days anyway? Why aren’t they all 28 days with an extra month? The spare day can be a transition day between the years.

I hate it when people park in the middle of a two car bay. A smart car each end should box them in.

Bosses with a penchant for very early meetings should be forced to have an equivalent number of very late meetings where night owls can see how productive and jolly you are on our turf.

Bring back the birch for anyone slurping their tea or coffee.

Dave Gorman rearranges the calender in modern life is goodish and while it makes more sense to have 13 days (and 2 intermission) it would mean we have to always have Friday the 13th.. i think that's why 😄 (though I think its my lucky day - as it made me a mum for the first time)

All public toilets must have a coat hook on the door and actual seats.

Tax breaks for anyone with a cherry blossom tree in their front garden, because I like them.

Xcise · 11/09/2026 00:16

@Enkoawww, that is lucky.

ban dogs and rejoice in the absence of bagged dog poo in hedges

Ban cats and allow the garden birds to thrive and rejoice in the lack of piles of cat crap in my garden.
Also ban garden bonfires and stinking acrid barbecues, I don’t want your horrible fatty smoke in my washing or my home!

And ban plastic grass

Yes I was coming on to say the same. Ridiculous invention. Poor wildlife.

I would banish the following from the planet - people who crack their knuckles and who don't close doors behind them.

It would be mandatory for all call centres to give you a choice of 3 decent songs instead of their awful music and if you get to a 2nd song, then have to pay you £100 compensation.

If you can't park inside the lines of a parking space, your car is impounded.

Managers can only get a second year in the role if at least 75% of their employees vote them competent.

Men, especially in the workplace, must use the words "I don't know" rather than making up bulllshit when asked something they've no clue about.

Change pedestrian rights because today flipping annoyed me pitch black dark, city traffic on a roundabout with a zebra crossing immediately after it straight onto another roundabout and these eejits cross with there I have right of way anyhow making both ways slam on there brakes, like it wasn't hard enough concentrating on the roundabouts, zebra and traffic anyhow

nepkoztarsasag · 11/09/2026 01:05

Unwanted and unheralded software updates.

ProjectFailScary · 11/09/2026 01:32

I would ban crackly food wrappers in cinemas.
I would impose a £100 on the spot fine for anyone thinking a train carriage is the same as their lounge.
i would create a truly integrated and segregated National Cycling Network.
i would deport that woman suing Great Bernera back to the USA using a submarine.
I would get fly-tippers to clean their shit up and do a year of community service in the local authority environmental services department.
I would ban dating apps because I think as women most us us are so over that shit.

All venue toilets to have the right balance of male/ female toilets so we ladies don't have to stand in line for 15 minutes while the men breeze in and out. I accept queueing is necessary but the imbalance of it boils my piss and makes me feel like a second class citizen.

Yes! Also sanpro in all toilets, just like toilet paper, soap and water are expected.

GustyGertie · 11/09/2026 08:08

I’d turn the deafening volume down in the cinemas. Wtf are they trying to do to us. Tinnitus here we come.

Supernintendochalmers1 · 11/09/2026 08:59

No dogs allowed anywhere that sells or prepares food, aside from legitimate service dogs.

All dogs must be on leads in public, unless in a designated dog area.

Instant hefty fine to anyone with one of those loud, splutter-y exhausts on their car.

Fines for those that park in parent & child spaces with no child.

With the escalators, I always thought that Transport for London/London Underground were humouring the overseas tourists who are used to driving on the right, but there's actually a technical reason why they say stand on the right and walk on the left.

But on pavements, my view is the same as the pp's - you walk on the left as we drive on the left. However, if it were agreed and put in the Highway Code that you walk on the right, that would work - we just need an agreed side that people stick to! However, I think left is better as you can see the traffic and hop into the road if it's safe.

Agree with all of those, although I'd just do away with P&C spaces and make larger spaces available at a (higher) cost. I'd quite like to make all cars 2/3 of their current size (except the ones that are already very small) but as I only have a day, I might have to give up on that one.

Also councils have to invest in new public toilets and stop closing them.

That's not the pedestrians' fault, it's the council's fault for putting zebra crossings right next to roundabouts. It's a stupid idea I agree.

This reminds me of another new law I'd bring in - pedestrians must wear hi-vis after the clocks go back (I know this wouldn't have helped you yesterday).

I've totally forgotten something.

In my world all businesses will have to have staffed call centres and an email address. And if you contact them, they have to substantively resolve your query that day or the day after. Unless it's really complex. No hiding behind bots and "your call is important to us" messages. Nope. You answer the phone on the second ring, you LISTEN to the person and you deal with their enquiry. And you employ enough people to read emails and deal with them properly.

Edited

As long as you apply the same to public sector, i.e. HMRC, DWP, NHS, DVLA, etc. who are generally far worse than businesses for not answering the phone, fobbing you off, etc.

Yes especially the ones that bugger up your laptop. We should be sueing Microsoft because they did an update that messed up my husband's and my son's laptops and both cost about £85 to sort out.

I think my laptop is too decrepit for it to have been affected.

Absolutely. And especially doctor's receptionists who tell you you have to go home and book an appointment online (for things like vaccines or smear tests) when you are standing in front of them.

The only thing is you can fine the private sector but fines on the public sector just end up costing the taxpayer.

Bigger parking spaces mean fewer of them, so you'd end up not being able to find a space. A great way to kill off even more of our town centres.

But a huge yes to reducing the size of cars back to what they used to be - massive taxes on the over-huge SUVS and 4*4 that very few people actually "need" - we need to return to longer estate cars for people who have big things to carry i.e. prams or wheelchairs, that have all but disappeared now that everyone wants huge Range Rovers, pick up trucks, and other MPV/SUVs, often with very poor/limited luggage spaces at the back.
