If you were ruler for a day. What minor thing would you fix.

I am not here talking stuff that would have long lasting political impact or getting rid of people permanently I am talking the smaller irritants that makes your eye roll and you are like "someone should do something about it"

Well for one day you are that someone what would you do?

For me. Potholes on my road and roads near by to be fixed (I would say all but I dont think 1 day would be enough time) but as many as they could manage in each city for the day

Also I would have someone drive around the towns cutting back hedges that are 1/2meter to 1 across the pavement. I know they would look shite after butthat's my minor irritant.

An invisible person who goes around snipping the thread at the back of all jackets with coat tails stitches still intact. Or a tiny nail scissors with every jacket, in with the spare button.

Hilarious and brilliant

I would ban lorries overtaking other lorries. They would all have to sit in one lane doing the same speed - no elephant racing allowed, This would mean all other lanes would be free for cars which would speed up journeys and make them less of a white knuckle ride as lorries swerve across lanes to drive 3mph faster than another lorry.

MotherofPufflings · 10/09/2026 08:41

Brunch would be strictly 10-12 and include actual brunch dishes only.

wheretoyougonow · 10/09/2026 08:43

I would enforce an automatic 3 points to your driving licence if the vehicle you own is parked on the pavement or over a dropped curb.

If I was a ruler for a day, I would like a explanation for those odd conversions that were on old wooden school rulers, e.g. 4 pecks = 1 bushel.

We never used the measurements at school and I still haven't needed them.

Camera’s on top of all traffic lights, automatic fines for going through red lights.

Some sort of NHS booking system for all appointments

A nationwide agreement on the lyrics of Wheels on the bus

Additup · 10/09/2026 09:01

I'd ban music in shops, shopping centres etc unless it's almost inaudible.

I'd ban any xmas stuff from appearing in shops until 1st December. Online shops are fine for those that want it.

JustAPeach · 10/09/2026 09:12

I’d ban school uniform. It’s ugly and impractical.

It would be illegal to take a shortcut that cuts through grass or similar, when there is a perfectly good path to walk on.

I will fund people to lurk around dog walking areas and spot people who don’t pick up dog poo. They’ll have to do community service and pick up litter for a day.

Multi clothes sizes will be banned as will making things in a particular size but then calling it a slim fit or oversized. I waste so much money on delivery and returns because shop sizing is inconsistent plus all the deliveries are bad for the environment.

LasVegass · 10/09/2026 09:14

I’d mandate that socks for school age children come in a single shape and shade for white, gray, black. As a benevolent ruler, I’d allow variety and creativity of design and ankle length in other colours.

And ban plastic grass

This

Give the whole country a jet wash. Remove all the weeds at the side of the roads.

Epoisses · 10/09/2026 09:25

I'd give menopausal women tasers

I’d love a country wide jet wash
i vaguely remember there being a community clean up of sorts before the London olympics

Instant ban for those who hold up the entire aeroplane boarding by taking forever to put their bag up in the locker and sit down (the ban would of course be for those who deliberately faff as opposed to those who can't physically go any faster)

BirdLandedonmyHead · 10/09/2026 09:34

A maximum price for school uniform. £30 skirts and £100 blazers are not necessary. Everything must be available from a minimum 2 suppliers, including the nearest umiform shop to the school.

@dontcookwontcookits all the road signs, bus stops, road gutters, pavements etc - imagine the mess but so satisfying! Have you seen those videos some kind people do for road signs when they stop and do them? It’s so good!!😊 😂

BobbieTables · 10/09/2026 09:42

I'd give local councils a legal responsibility to water and keep alive the trees they plant.

I'd make a law that every Japanese restaurant had to have a Gfree soy sauce option and anywhere that had more than one restaurant/fast food place (like services, airports, shopping centres etc) had to have a coeliac friendly place with a Leon or a jacket potato vendor for preference!

I'd make a law that everywhere had benches and clean public toilets

Also agree with pp that AI for pointless things like email would be banned.

That sounds dangerous!

I would ban any trimming/ poisoning of valuable wildlife habitat in our towns and cities "because it looks neat".Learn to enjoy the birds, bees and wildflowers you soulless tosspots.

I would also commandeer all golf courses and restore them for nature.

Yes!

If this were arranged I’d totally volunteer around my local area
what a great idea

I'd allow all local residents to use the local tip (1.5 miles) instead of being required to drive a 34 mile round trip.

Hampshire County Council, it is not beyond the wit of man to set up a mutual arrangement between you and West Berkshire. If your departments were run by women, it would have been done years ago. You are bleedin' useless.

We have a similar situation in our county, whereby there's a large village that's to all practical intents an extension of the big town over the border, but they have to travel 30 miles to the nearest tip in their own county instead of the one half a mile over the border.

Most of the villagers realise the beauty of friendship, and thus have plenty of friends from the town - sometimes they meet them out for a coffee; sometimes one household will host the other for a lovely get-together; and sometimes they will borrow their tip permit!

anniegun · 10/09/2026 09:57

ban dogs and rejoice in the absence of bagged dog poo in hedges

I would ban trigonometry and algebra from standard school maths classes and concentrate on practical maths skills that people will actually need in their lives.

The percentage of people who will go into a career where they will need to use them is minuscule; and the vast majority of those will likely use specialist apps to help them - so it's only the handful of people who develop the apps who actually need to know anything in-depth about it. Even using the time to teach the kids Esperanto would probably be less of a waste of time!!

This.

Another vote for this.

I would impose stiff penalties for anyone driving a vehicle with a noise-making modifier fitted to the exhaust. The noises are all horrible. First offence - £1,000 fine. Second offence - seizure of vehicle.

I would ban shops from playing Christmas music before 1st December. There can be an exception for special Christmas shops selling nothing but Christmas stuff. If people want to celebrate Christmas in November, they can go to these.
